Tuna

Lately I've been eating a lot of tuna because it's tasty and cheap as well as high in protein which is good. I'm eating maybe 2-4 120g cans of tuna a day for maybe 3 days now and I've read somewhere that only 12 ounces per week should be eaten max because of the mercury content in fish products. Is that true? How many cans of tuna is ok to eat per week/day?

The feds are going to come out with some sort of advisory later in the year. But experts are all over the place on this one. The warnings you're hearing are for canned albacore tuna, the white tuna, which you're probably not buying because it's more expensive. Is yellowfin tuna -- the cheap stuff -- safer? Nobody's saying.

Most of the warnings right now are aimed at small children and pregnant women. But again I don't know what kind of proof they have, if any. I ate two or three cans of tuna a day for a couple of years and had no problems then or after. So even worst case, I doubt that chugging several cans a day for a few months is an issue for a grown person.

Kind of a moot point anyway, because after six months or so you'll be so sick of tuna you won't even want to look at a can! Suggest you start looking into egg whites as well.

Why egg whites?

They have protein without fat, or much; the egg yolk carries all the fat and cholesterol. So you can eat as many eggwhite as you can stand.

Also, you can make an eggwhite omelette or scramble and it tastes like, well, real cooking. Some people leave one yolk in with half-a-dozen eggwhites, and I must admit that it does improve the flavor.

Tuna is good. Don't by into the mecury thing, there are several studies that debunk that in modern day tuna. The mecury scare is based on a 1980's study that has never been updated.

Tuna is your friend. To avoid getting sick of it, try marinating it different things. one of my favorites is fat free italian dressing.

Also, on the subject of egg whites, I make a really killer omlet

3 egg whites 1 full egg
4 oz nitrate free turkey lunch meat
4 oz canned tuna
Diced tomato
Cilantro
Season with your favorite omlet spices

Has about 40 grams of protien, barely any fat and is mmmmm mmmm good.

Interesting, I was doing some reasearch on tuna because I was really bored and I was eating a can of tuna at the time and I found a bunch of stuff on mercury poisoning. One article mentioned that it's very possible to get it from fish...What exacly is mercury poisoning anyway and how would one get it?

You would have to eat quite a bit of tuna to worry about it. The kind that has the most mercury is canned white albacore. Pregnant women need to worry about it. Keep eating tuna, it is tasty and very good for you!

*edit* I found an interesting table that actually gives you the recommended amount of tuna you should eat based on your weight. Looks like I can eat 1 can every 3 days without worry (which is about how much I eat anyhow). Anyway, I still think its all a crock of shit.

If you're really worried about it, but want to keep tuna as an awesome source of protien in your diet, then stick with yellow fin tuna steaks fresh from your grocer.

When eating a can of tuna are you folks just knocking it down straight out of the can? Just curious...I have a few cans but I eat mostly chicken and turkey and would like to throw in some tuna.

The thought of kicking it down the pie hole right out of the can makes me a little ... eeeem ... not so comfortable :)

I actually really enjoy tuna straight from the can. In the past I would add salt, but then I kicked the salt habit and now its just straight tuna. I think alot of people find it a bit dry without some sort of dressing or mayo though.

If I make sandwiches out of it, I use just a smidge of light miracle whip. Its got 2 grams of fat and 30 calories per tablespoon, so use sparringly if dieting. I don't eat any fatty foods anymore so I can eat it once in awhile, but I usually eat it out of the can. Just finished one as a matter of fact.

love tuna...

tuna+mayo+capful of vinegar, on a bagel, cover with slice of cheese, warm til cheese melts. quick, low in fat, filling, tastes good.

in my honest opinion, there isn't a sweeter, more delicious food on this great blue earth than the tuna.
its healthy, succulent and easy to prepare in hundreds of ways.
i absolutely love it.
