what do i need for new hair style?
 

Hey,
After all these years of not styling my hair or doing anything to it, its time for a change. I never liked gel, but I heard that there is something else. Something like a cream? I want to be able to somewhat shape my hair and style it. My hair is straight.
What do you guys recomend?
BTW: I am asian and i have fairly dense and thick hair

I use Kiwi Manipulating Wax to spray in the hair- I am a woman, but men can use it, too. A little goes a long way with that stuff, the can lasts a long time. It's much lighter than gel that can make your hair cripsy or weight it down. It can give a full, kind of layered effect to it, but keeping it looking natural.
I suggest, though, going to a salon and see what they suggest for what you want to do and your type of hair.

You may be thinking about the foam: mousse

its decent, but it can get somewhat solid sometimes.

I like gel because it comes in different types, from ones that just make your hair manageable to ones that make your hair harder than learning mandarin.

What was it about gel that you didn't like?

You could try some hair creams or waxes (may be called pomades)like ICE Spikers.

Don't wash your hair for several days and dont' comb it. I'm only half kidding, I love messy hair.

Try mixing the gel you already have with Burts Bees avocado hair treatment. You can use it as a hair mask and wash it out, but it can also be used as a styling product. Mixed with gel, it gives a nice vaguely dirty/messy look. Not in a gross way though. Plus it smells really nice. I love that stuff.

I've never used gel, I have just seem people use gel and the bottles and it just looks weird and gross.

There's also a "Fiber" product out there by American Crew (click!) that works well for me. It's malleable and waxy, and doesn't give the shiny or the rigid look.

pomade is nice, but the ones ive seen are funky smellying.
i personally use something called Hair Candy by Bedhead. It's kind of like a cream.. i use very little, just a dab on my palms and spread it out, and piece out my damp hair. it does dry a little hard, but it's not too bad unless you use a lot and it's easy to fix if you just rub the clumped hair after it dries.

Most salons will give you good advice on what styles and products that will best suit your hair type.

If you are unsure of what style you want, ask someone or look at the hairstyling books that most salons have, and find something that appeals to you.

If you're just diving into the whole hair product thing and you're hair has been reasonably tame so far, you might want to just get some surfer's sex wax (for hair). It's like the stuff surfers use on their boards but they make a special one for hair - not as greasy as pomade, but waxy enough to help style. You can just use it at the margins of your hair: along your part, along the front and to hold down any parts that stick up/out and look funny. My hair is similar to yours, and sex wax has been my savior since I cut my hair short.

Mousse is pretty great, too.

I use a "mohawk gel".
I too have the straight hair, and it usually doesn't cooperate.
I've been trying to find some that you don't have to purchase at a salon, but no luck so far.

I can't stand most gels and hairsprays since they make your hair like a rock; however, I have found that the Loreal Anti-Sticky invisigel works well and doesn't give that rock feeling at all.
