Insomnia from too much energy

Ever since I joined the gym and started working out, drinking protein shakes, and taking multivitamins, I've gained an extraordinary amount of energy than I used to have. As a result I'm usually wide awake with insomnia most nights. Is this normal?

that happens to me too if i work out too late. i have trouble sleeping sometimes. late night workouts are terrible for that. i always try and hit the gym as soon as i get off work. that way by the time i should be going to bed, i am usually tired.

working out does tend to give you more energy throughout the day. i find i am MUCH more productive on days that i go to the gym as opposed to my off days. you feel better both mentally and physically.

i dont think its anything to worry about.

It's considering unhealthy by some to excersise late in the day. I don't use any extra vitamins or anything, but if you feel you have too much energy, maybe you would want to cut back on the shakes?

Protein shakes don't keep you awake nor does multivitamins. You are most likely exercising a little too late in the evening, which raises your heartrate thus giving you more energy. This is why a lot of people love to work out in the morning since it gives you a jump start of energy on the day.

Try working out a tad earlier. Getting more exercise will only make your sleep better, not worse :)

Agreed. Working out late keeps you awake. Early evening is better, right after work. Morning is good, if you can swing it. If you've got an office job and get a bit drowsy in midafternoon, a lunchtime workout is just the thing. That's when you _want_ to be awake. Also, I've found that the endorphin rush from exercising before work or the middle of the day helps me to deal better with stress.

Yeah, I suspect it's from working out too late. I used to work out at 7:30 at night for two hours and figured out a couple of hours ealier was much better. Plus, a really good cool down with stretching helps as well.

Interesting. After a tough seesion at night, i am often completely fucked, so i can sleep with no dramas and fall asleepy quite quickly. Although that's after a really tough session. For lighter cardio seesions, yeah it gets mne awake, but a tough weights sessions will normally leave me pretty tired and sore afterwards. Which is good, cause then you know it's working :D

Working out eariler is good as well though, even a light session, as it kicks your whole body into gear and gets your metabolism starting up.

Having sex or a wank is normally a good way to beat insomina and trouble sleeping ;)

Actually I work out in the morning between 9 and 10. So I don't know what's going on.

I guess the question is then, do you miss the sleep? Is it hurting you to sleep less, or is everything just fine?

I knew a guy who got into the groove with yoga and a vegetarian diet in a serious way -- and I mean really serious -- and he swore that he only wanted two or three hours of sleep a night. Of course with yoga and meditation you sometimes have a hard time determining what "sleep" really is.

Then your disrupted sleep has nothing to do with your exercising.

Jesus Pimp 01-18-2004 06:39 PM

I should of stated that I do get sleep but am able to stay up later than usual thus not necessarily insomnia.

mystix 01-19-2004 06:41 AM

i've been wide awake after working out late, the best time to work out is in the morn, but not everyone can

bookerV 01-19-2004 08:16 AM

Back before i was working out i would be tired a lot more. i think its just the overall laziness factor. once you start working out your body seems to be more active when you dont need sleep, and you sleep better when you do need it.
you said that you are getting to sleep ok. i dont think its anything to worry about.

Then this is not a problem.
