Prague, Vienna, and Budapest

I'm thinking of going on a 2 week tour to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. I don't know too much about these cities and I am not sure what it will be like.

Has anybody been to any of these cities? What did you do? What was your impression? What was the best, the worst, etc?

I did this exact trip back in April. I would say two weeks might be a little long for the entire trip. I did it in 9 days (3 in each city) and by the end we were getting very tired. Obviously you would want to do the cities in order working from either north to south or in reverse.

Of the three Prague was by far my favorite, but that might have been influenced by the order I visited in. By the time I reached Budapest I was eager to return to London. I would recommend starting in Budapest then and saving Prague for the end. As for a good guide, I would recommend the books by Rick Steves. I am not sure if he has one for Budapest but I know there are ones for Prague and Vienna.

Actually, Rick Steve's company is based right here in Seattle, Washington, USA, where I live. The plan was to probably travel with his company.

Been in Prague and Budapest, I live in Vienna for 1.5 years now.

Budapest I visited for the new year 02-03 and loved it. Hungarian people were friendly and helpfull when needed and not after your money all the time. In the city I noticed them to understand quite well english, but somehow more german. The Castle up the Pest side is amazing during sunset and the view to the city on the other side of the Danube is really nice. Compared to Prague/Vienna it's the cheapest.

Prague I visited in Easter 03 and it was also great. After Bratislava and Budpest I found it a bit expensive though. This also depends if you stay in the old city, where everything is more expensive. Get out of the re-builded old city and prices drop to 1/3. Beer&Food was just excellent. I also recommend to visit the Castle on the other side of the river. Again an excellent view of the old City.

Vienna... Well what can I say. I like it. There is definetely lot to see all these historical monuments etc. museums. Excellent food, culture lots of it. And also plenty of places to go out. The inner city is quite expensive, but there is as well lot of the the attractions. Fastest way to check most of the sights is to take tram 1 or 2 which are going around the city.

For the info of the cities I would recommend Lonely Planet (http://www.lonelyplanet.com) I did my research through these. 2 weeks is enough to see most of all the cities, but as with the architechture they are quite similar one might get blinded at the end.

Feel free to ask more details.

I love Prague. There's a really really awesome nightclub there by the foot of the Charles' Bridge.
The food and drinks were pretty cheap when I was there. Are you goign to be stayin in a hostel? If so, make sure you stay at Sir Toby's.

Its a hostel with a really nice atmosphere. Lots of friendly people when I was there. Oh yeah, and the rooms are very clean. We were able to get a private room w/ a bathroom for the four of us. There is also a common room area with a kitchen if you feel like cooking something insteading of going out to eat.

Also the prices weren't too bad.

Sir Toby's is the hostel of choice on the lonely planet boards as well.

I'm heading to Prague this summer but at 36 too old for hostels.

I'd really like to hear more about what those of you who have been to Prague thought about it. I would really love to go there, as I have distant relatives living there, and am very interested in the history of the city, particularly its "paranormal" associations.
