Extreme soreness in muscle after intense workout

I am experiencing extreme soreness in my pecs after I had an intense workout today. This is alot more than the usual soreness. It is so bad that it hurts to even lift my arm or make turns in my car. I know the muscle will recover quickly but is this a bad thing or a good thing.

Hmm...well normally soreness is good to an extent, it means the muscles were torn/worked but are rebuilding themselves which makes them stronger. But painful soreness as you said, I'm not sure if that's good :-O (unless you were specifically workin your pecs to the extreme today in which case that may explain it) but otherwise, if it gets real bad :-O get it checked out dood.
(Thats my opinion, I may be wrong on some of the things i've stated above but that's my 2 cents) hope you feel better tho!

Its a good thing. From the way you described, you must be new to lifting. It is far worse when your muscles arent used to the lifting... later on you wont experience the soreness as much as you are now. It should be all better in about 48 hours. I enjoy that sore feeling :)

Thanks for the help. I am very new to lifting. It has gone from painful soreness to normal soreness so I haven't hurt myself, I will just take an extra day off before I go to the gym again so the muscles can recover.

Yeah, that's what happens when you lift hard. No pain, no gain. :)

Good luck with your lifting, and be careful.

When you're new to lifting, don't try and do it every day, or every other day. Ease into it, and you'll find your period of recovery shrinking.

Not a bad thing at all, just think of it as.......Hell yeah, I kicked ass in the gym today. Also if your gym has a swimming pool or hot tub those are kool to chill in after a real intense workout.

I like the soreness feeling, just not to the extent that I can hardly turn the wheel in my car. I've started doing a split routine so I give my muscles time to heal.

You should always be splitting your workouts, alternating muscle groups. Remember, your muscles grow outside the gym not in them. Rest! :)

Extreme soreness like that is generally not good. You've probably done more harm than good. Your body is letting you know that you over did it!

Maybe it is because you trained extremely hard on a regular exercise, or you went too hard on a new one. Or you haven't trained for a while and went too hard on your first session back. The other thing that may make you oversore is if you are getting sick.

Being sore for a couple of days after a workout is good but extreme soreness is not.

When the soreness is diffuse, it can be a sign of rhabdomyalisis. In an otherwise healthy person, it is only seen in conjunction with excessive wgt lifting and marked dehydration. I don't think it is likely to occur in an isolated muscle group. In rhabdo, there is enough muscle breakdown that the pigments from the dead tissue can actually lead to accute kidney failure. If your body hurts too much, it may be trying to tell you something.
