Going to South Africa for about a week soon, for work mostly. Haven't been there before, and wondering if anybody out there has any advice or tips while there? Won't have much time to sight-see or party, but concerned over crime, disease etc...... Any respones welcome........

I've been there, it's incredibly beautiful. You didn't say where you were going in SA. I've been to both Durban and Cape Town. During daylight, everything is cool, but after dark, travel in groups, taxis, private cars, or stay home. This is a good rule for the rest of Africa too. If travelling by car, if an oncoming car flashes it's lights at you, (like we do to warn of radar cops) DON"T flash back. It's a gang initiation, and you will end up dead.
If in Cape Town, take the time to go up Table Mountain. It's is undescribable. Like a lot of countries, the rumors are much worse than the truth, but use your head.

Lucifer, thanks for that. It's only a flying visit to J/berg and out to Zulu country, for only five days.
It turns out I'll be well chaperoned byt locals, but that clue about the flashing carl lights is one to remember! Thanks again :-)

Well I live in South Africa. The rumours are definelt worse than the reality. The flashing lights thing is a load of shit. But be warned, if you are going to be naive, you will be an easier target than most. Criminal the world over looks for the easy prey. If you travel in a group you will be fine! It is not necessary to have an escourt when you go to the loo though! You mention Zulu country - does that mean you are going to visit Kwazulu Natal?

Many thanks to Lucifer and Wingnut.
I've gone and come back in one piece, and it was a pretty cool trip. Was based a Isandlwana rock where one of the Zulu battels took place about 150 years ago .... all pretty interesting.
