Golden Gate Bridge? Not Really...
Here's one to bring things into "perspective".
http://www.lasikinistanbul.com/deu/i...e_istanbul.jpg http://www.clevelandbridge.com/gallery/Bosporus.jpg http://www.bmed.mcgill.ca/embs/mirro...ge2_duzgun.jpg This bridge was designed and built by the same Joseph Strauss, except it connects Europe and Asia across the Bosphorous in Istanbul. Eerie, isn't it? |
Yeah, I guess he built what he built. But, that also may have been "the style" for long-span suspension bridges at the time, given the materials available. There are a fair number of bridges from that era that look like that.
Case in point, not bridge related -- I live in a beach town with a classic wood rollercoaster called The Giant Dipper, built in '25 by some famous coaster guy. A few years ago I went down to San Diego and there on Ocean Beach was -- another Giant Dipper. Same name, same materials and construction, though smaller. Turns out they were built by different people, but at the same time. That's jus the style they were building rollercoasters in, back in '25. Same principle could hold true for suspension bridges. None of which diminshes the impact of those pictures, and the jarring effect they have. Thanks for posting. |
Here at Ohio State, they just spent 9 million dollars to make what I believe is the shortest suspension bridge currently in use today. I swear, the thing is probably nearly as wide as it is long. There was no need for it at all other than to look pretty.
