Give me the Spain and Portugal low-down
I leave for Spain and Portugal next Thursday. I am flying into Barcelona but will be travelling all over. I need recommendations on places to stay, eat and see. Is there anything I should not miss?
Thanks! |

I don't know if I'm getting this to you in time, I went to Madrid for a weekend this summer when I was studying in England. If you're there, make sure to check out Casa Patas, original Spanish Flamenco dancing. It was actually pretty cool to see. Also, I recommend eating some paella. Incredible stuff if you like seafood. Hope it helps.

I'm not sure if you ment yer leaving the 27th or 20th but oh well.
You need to see the 2 cities of Toledo and Cordoba. Toledo is a small town where they became world famous for thier swordmanship. Everywhere I turned I was shocked to see amazing swordsmiths and little shops that time had passed over. But if you miss Cordoba then you've missed a truly amazing place. It was a city that The Spanish built with a HUGE cathedral and gardens walls castle etc. Then the Moors took it over and built onto what the Spanish built. Then after a few hundred years the Spanish reclaimed the city so all of the buildings are a complete mix of gothic and arabic design. There is actually a massive Cathedral that when you go inside its a big big mosque. But the inner sanctuary is all Roman Catholic. Its a hoot.

Only have 10 days after my semester in London abroad is finished to travel in Northern Spain alone. I've picked up (time and money limit in mind) that Bilbao, San Sebastien, and Barcelona are great towns to visit. I think the main thing to consider is what you enjoy doing in Countries/towns like Spain. I know Madrid is amazing but I'm citied/museumed out and am looking to enjoy some geography and countryside.
I would love to see Cordoba, Toledo, Madrid, Gibralter, and Alicante if I had the time but it just won't work this time. Good luck! -Tim

portugal is somewhat extraordinary, as there are monkeys at the top that you can feed and you can (usually) see Africa from your vantage point. it's also interesting, on the drive to the Rock, to see the social disgust with british occupation.
although not for the faint of heart, I found the bullfights to be spectacular in its own right. it's akin to the circuses of Rome, and it's similarly downright primal in many ways, but I think it's worth seeing something that's been a part of the culture for hundreds of years. of course, leave it to an american to show utter contempt for something that is to the natives an expression of heritage. |
