To defer or not defer my student loans?

My grace period for my students is soon ending and I was wondering I should defer my loans or start paying them. Right now I'm working an entry level and will soon be living on my own. I plan on possibly going to grad school. So I don't know. Should I see if I can get lower payments? I'm not really sure how to talk my lenders about this. Any advice or questions to ask?

What are the allowed reasons for deferment of your loans? When I got out of college (a bit more than a decade ago) there were only two possible reasons for deferment. One was going back to school full time. The other was unemployment (and this deferment was very temporary).

If you are able to defer them and do not have an abundance of cash laying around -- why not and defer them. The interest rate is about as low as you are going to get on any loan you will receive during your lifetime and you will be able to start making the payments in a year or so after you have had the opportunity to save up a bit of cash which you can use as a cushion for emergencies.

The trick here though is having enough disciple to save that cushion.... Don't make the same mistake that a lot of us did and rack up that credit card debt at a young age because from experience I can tell you it takes years (8 in my case) to get out from underneath that debt load.

Defer them. There is no lower rate, you pay what they tell you or you get interest relief.

Atleast with those bloodsucking OSAP bastards.

I had a hell of a time paying my student loan every month at first, but I'd rather get it out of the way sooner than put off the inevitable. I'm done with the interest and just paying the principal now after about 9 months, it's nice to see the amount I owe shrinking!

I was "lucky" and got some money from insurance after I had been in a car wreck. Very first thing I did when the check cleared was call up the loan company and sent them checks the next day.
