I usually keep a empty pop can in my car and use it as an ashtray...But when I don't have one, They are going out the window.

I actually got pulled over one time for throwing a butt out the window.

It was raining + The girl was on a bicycle = Pissed off cop...So she was a total bitch about it too.

If your wondering, I was stopped at a red light and she was behind me.

It seemed like her biggest problem was that it could have started a fire....It was friggin raining out. She just gave me shit then let me go.

So ya, I guess that makes me a litter bug. I never dispose of garbage or anything like that out my car window or in any other way...It always finds a trash can. Just butts.

i just hate it cos sometimes the butts go to the back window and hit me on the face or something >_<

OK, this story I'm not too proud of. My only excuse is that I was young.

I was the passenger in a car, first in line for our lane, at a red light. The guy in the car waiting to my right tossed his butt out the window. I didn't think, I just got out of the car picked it up and tossed it back in his window saying, "You dropped this." I don't remember what the guy looked like or anything. I only remember the shocked look on my friend's face as I got back in the car as the light turned green. My friend got us out of there pronto. He said the other car never moved in his rear view mirror; the guy must've been scrambling to find the smoldering butt.

I've always wanted to do that!!!!

I feel like carying a little box of stones in my car with me, and every time somebody throws a butt out their window infront of me, i'd get infront of them and throw a rock out my window and see how they like it. Hey, if they want to light stuff on fire and throw it out their window at me then they should be prepared to have things thrown back at them. am i right?

Unthinking people, it's trash, trash need sto be deposed of properly. It just makes you look foolish to throw it wherever.

We could always collect a few hundred butts and then fed-ex them to the offenders while they're at work.

Some neighbors of ours (in our last house) rented out several rooms in their house. The house rules stated no smoking so they'd usually smoke in front of the house and toss their butts into the street. My gf hated that and one morning collected all she could find and placed them on the hood of one of their cars. She made no secret of it - she wanted the practice to stop and all requests had been ignored.

Well the owner of the car came over later extremely pissed off. He started cussing and yelling at her about the damage done to his paint job (there was none). She calmly explained why she did it but this guy was livid...

Unfortunately, this guy caught her as she was rolling up the garden hose, the kind with the hand spray nozzle... She eventually had enough and finally pointed it at him and gave him a quick squirt in the face. The look on his face was priceless: utter disbelief. He sputtered and started calling her names in an hysterical voice. So she calmly turned the hose back on and started hosing him up and down. He eventually made a retreat.

The butt problem resolved itself after that.

My girlfriend used to smoke. I wouldn't let her smoke in my house, so she'd have to on the porch, where there was a coffee can for her butts and ashes.

One day, I loaded all the used butts into a plastic bag and took them with me in my car. The next day, sure enough, some idiot in front of me on the freeway tossed his butt out and the sparks came across my hood (not causing damage, but certainly peeving me off).

So, I passed him, got in front of him and dumped half the bag out my window, making sure it would hit his car.

Yeah, I littered (ONCE).......but it was PRICELESS to see the guy swerve halfway off the road.

I've always put cigs out on the sidewalk and flicked them out the window. I don't live in a place that could catch on fire, so that really isn't an issue. I never really thought of it as littering. I don't EVER litter, etc. If anything, I pick up other people's trash sometimes. I guess I just never thought of it. They are just such itty bitty things... and ashing and stubbing in your tray makes you car smell bad. Now that I have been enlightened, perhaps I will try to find some kind of ashtray that I could use (not the one in the car - no way) Anyone help me out with the portable, air tight product to help me mend my ways?

You're not going to stop harming your body or the environment. You use Hair Spray, You eat Fatty foods, You drive a car instead of a bicycle. There's a million things you could do every day to help your body and the world, but nobody does them.

I can't reach my ashtray in my car because I'm so short that I have to pull the seat forward as far it will go. I flick my cigarettes out the window. I don't toss them into Grass or into Gasoline, and a cigarette in the middle of the road isn't going to hurt the environment anymore than it already is.

Yeah, that last comment you made was something like what my sister said a long time ago. We were out at dinner, and she was about 13 years old and she said: Hey, smoker! Pick up your trash! She snarled at my sister and stomped on it with her heel, and then turned her back to us. Herr.

I hate smoke of any kind, especially from smokers.
I hate litter of any kind, especially items that don't biodegrade easily.

In response to the people who think it’s just a little thing, well your butt goes from the road, sidewalk, parking lot etc. into drainage ditches/sewers that flow into rivers & oceans. Fish, birds, turtles and just about every unsuspecting hungry creture will try to or eat the butt (FIBERGLASS), not a good source of nutrition (TOXIC) and unfortunately for them wind up sick, dieing or DEAD. :mad:

It's hard enough to get your average joe to not litter, but smokers have already proven themselves to be completely uncaring that they're poisoning and choking everyone around them. Some people seem to think 'hey, only hurting myself', but secondhand smoke has already been established as having a causal link to cancer, asthma, etc. There is not another vice on the planet so common, that has such horrible repercussions. Expecting someone who doesn't care if they indirectly poison other people to care if they indirectly poison something as ambiguous a concept as possible eco-damage... I mean, come on =p
Not all smokers are uncaring, of course, some are very careful to only smoke in their own homes, not around children, etc. But as a whole group, it should be obvious they're going to be a lot more likely to litter, and clearly more likely to not look at the long term effects of things.

I had an ex that used to throw fruit and other foods out the window. Her claim was it was biodegradeable and therefore OK. I felt embarrased though.

This made me laugh! When I first read the original comment about throwing the butt back in the car, I thought about my best friend (a pack a day smoker who LOVES his car and is an amateur boxer and prison guard-aka, he's never without OC spray and a large knife) and myself (pack to pack and half, also LOVE my car-250 pounds, 6'0").

Neither of us are violent, but I think something like this would be enough for me to get out and take care of the matter face to face. I'm not saying I'd return the violence, but I'd have to try hard not to. I'd try to keep it to the "stern talking-to" stage. :) I'm not sure he'd remain quite as calm.

This is not an equivalent reaction to someone throwing their butt out the window. This could cause SERIOUS damage to the person or their property, and I would not be at all suprised if it resulted in some serious bodily harm to the person deciding to throw the butt back into the car, or possible legal action.

Just to clarify, I'm not making any sort of threats (I'm the biggest wimp you'll ever meet), I'm just saying, people just need to think before they do something like that. When I was a little younger, I used to do stuff like that (nothing that could cause that much damage), and I almost got my hind side beaten because of it. It's easy to say something online (much like I'm doing right now, ironically:) ), but in real life, there can be some very unpleasant consequences.

And for anyone that doesn't think a cigarette butt thrown back could do damage, trust me, it can. I had one fly into my car last week and get trapped behind the seat and my back. I don't believe I have to stress how unpleasant that was! :)

I just have to say, generally, in this thread there are a lot of real gems. My original post said (something like) that I was glad to have been made aware of this issue and that I would try to mend my ways.

Sad to say that a lot of these posts look like the sorry combination of "just say no" ism and misguided eco conformists.

Comments like: "Oh, save bambi and don't litter", etc. and "I would love to shove the but right up the guy's"... etc. don't help anything. They just make you sound silly. I'm not trying to justify littering, but really, our environment isn't going to implode b/c of cig butts, really now, really... And go ahead and try your throwing cigs back into cars trick and see how long it takes to get hurt or shot.

If you really care, then do something to make this a known issue. This way, people may change their behaviour. Don't assume all smokers are idiots, etc. because it just makes you sound silly. Smoking is an ADDICTION people. HEllo! What other addiction would it be ok to talk about this way?

I mean, would it be too much to be courteous to to others around you? And average joe questioned whether I am perfect. When it comes to littering, yes I am. I don't litter. I recycle my newspapers, soda cans, motor oil, etc... I was a boy scout, and old habits don't die. I even clean up after myself in the movie theater. You all may think I am joking, but I have not knowingly dropped a piece of trash on the ground since I was maybe 5 years old.

That's not the point I was trying to make in the quoted post, however. When that happened with the cigarette in my car, I had in fact been trying to exclusively use the ashtray that I had specifically placed in my car after reading this thread (since my car doesn't have a factory ashtray). The point I was making, is that throwing a piece of burning ANYTHING into someone's car, is not a good idea. You never know who you may encounter.

And as for holding their door shut: in order to throw the butt out and then in again, the window's going to be down.

But I agree that all trash, including cigarettes, should be properly disposed of.

Smoking is disgusting. Littering is disgusting. Not much else to say here.

I smoke. I toss my butts out the window without thinking. If I am smoking outdoors somewhere I extinguish the cigarette and take the butts with me to a trash can or appropriate container.

I am an occasional cigar smoker, so I am not saying to stop smoking. And I am not a someone that is out to save the world. But I am out to save myself from some idiot that throws his buts out the window and hits my windshield. Because at that point you are not paying attention to the road, but at the cigaret that exploded on your windshield and don't pay attention to the tree that you are driving into.

I cannot believe the amount of energy being put into this topic. can you imagine what could happen if it was redirrected into say a letter to your congressman about dropping bombs on inoccent people or how the crime levels in our communities are unacceptable or how the homeless need food and shelter or how our schools are underfunded or how we are sick and tired of Micheal Jackson molesting children. Get over yourselves and find a better cause... because youre not going to stop a smoker from flicking his butt on the ground.

I admit it, I used to throw my butts out the window. I soon stopped after I started riding a motorcycle and got hit by butts thrown out the window of the car in front of me. Nothing like a nice cigarette cherrie to hit you in the neck.

Now I use an empty bottle that has a screw cap. I don't even throw butts on the ground any more.

Next step, quit smoking all together.

I figure if you are going to be an ass you might as well have some conviction.

The problem with me training myself away from this habit, is that every 2 months or so I quit altogether for a while. I try to quit forever, but sometimes forever only lasts for a couple of months. So when I start smoking again I fall back into the same habits over and over again. At least I'm more aware of it. Its rare that I smoke in my car anyway, it stinks like hell, then again so does my coat...:( Addiction blows...

So, if I'm a smoker (which I am) and I throw my butts out the car window (which I do) that makes me an evil, ignorant, uncivilized, bambi-killing, bitch?

I had a friend in LA who was a motorcycle cop. He would give a citation to anyone that did that because it was a pet peeve of his. If the person getting the citation got irate or was an asshole. He'd take their cigarettes away from them as "evidence"
