Why do men sweat more than women???

Hey there...I was just wondering...why do men seem to sweat more than women??? Just wondering...THANX
C'YA ?:-D

Sleepyjack 10-02-2003 01:22 AM

i think we have more sweat glands?

eci 10-02-2003 02:32 AM

Because we do more manly stuff - GRARRR!

:)

Remember the old adage: horses sweat, men perspire, women glow.

skysooner 10-02-2003 12:30 PM

It's kind of funny. I can do the same exercise as my wife, and I have actually done it more (biking), but I still end up sweating rivers while she mildly perspires.

Chuckles 10-02-2003 03:54 PM

cuz we work harder!!! :P

Haha just kidding, i dunno maybe more hair lol? They shave it all off.

Mael 10-03-2003 12:03 AM

part of it could be the general difference in size. women are, on average, smaller then us guys. so when doing weight-bearing exercises, we're carrying and throwing around more weight than the women are. although once you take things in relative terms, this idea might not hold water. our added size also means that we could be building up more body heat faster, so we're sweating more to get rid of the heat. or maybe women are just sweat glandular freaks. :)

BubblegumTeflon 10-04-2003 10:06 PM

Exactly what I was going to say, Mael. They're bigger. They have more body to keep cool so they sweat more than us.

Me So Horny 10-04-2003 10:22 PM

It might be the higher percentage of muscle mass, but I think I'll go with Chuckles theory that we have to work harder. For the women out there, it's not because we're stupid, but we have to take up slack for those that will remain unnamed. ;-)

danielboy 10-12-2003 03:50 PM

I think it has to do with hair.

hilbert25 10-13-2003 02:05 AM

They don't, it's just an effort thing. Few women put as much effort as men do into working out or other such physical things. Those that do are awesome and should be applauded.

Hanging out with female athletes has shown me that with the same effort a woman will sweat just as much as a guy, if not more. The problem is that in my experience, maybe only 1 in 4 women are as likely to put in the same effort as 2/3 of the guys out there would (a lot of guys don't expend any effort either).

mb99usa 10-13-2003 05:04 AM

Not sure of the reason behind it but my wife rarely sweats. The only time I know she will sweat regularly is when we have sex.

It has nothing to do with an effort thing because she works harder at physical activities than I do.

pocon1 10-13-2003 09:48 AM

Muscle is our primary source of heat generation. After that is I believe the liver. Men have more muscle per lb of total bodyweight. Men also weigh more and have less total skin per lb to cool off. Look at elephants that use their huge ears to cool off their large bodies.

Crazy/Beautiful 11-09-2003 12:11 PM

I sweat alot and I'm a chick. Depending on what I'm doing you can see it dripping off me.

Manwich 11-09-2003 05:11 PM

When weight lifting I see women doing like 20 reps with very low weight while guys are generally doing 8 with a huge amount of weight.

Same with aerobics, I generally try to challenge myself with running and biking, trying to go further faster. Girls seem to want to say that they ran 2 miles or something, although sometimes I do see girls go all out and they are usually the fitter ones.

Plan9Senior 11-09-2003 07:17 PM

Call me twisted, but the thought of a woman sweating sorta turns me on :p. Dunno why... anyhow... carry on...
:D

hy_ 11-12-2003 03:41 PM

hormones?

hobo 11-16-2003 09:14 PM

I have heard that people that are more physically fit will tend to sweat more because their bodies are more finely tuned to maintaining a specific body temperature.

Reproduction is probably another reason for men generally sweating more. With sweat comes pheromones and it would benefit males to produce a lot of pheromones to advertise themselves to females.

ickma 11-21-2003 01:15 PM

To advertise myself I would just wear a tight shirt to show off my man pecs.

It should. Physical exertion is a natural turnon, Psych 101.

Its even worse if you are also physically exerting yourself. Sorta like beer-goggles, I guess. ;)

LINKY

Acorrding to this article men sweat about twice as much as women, and it's not exactly known why, but theorized that it has something to do with hormones.

lilemmze 05-11-2009 11:46 AM

It is not just an effort thing, men have more sweat glands than women, also women are more able to regulate the amount of water they use. Women start to sweat at a higher temperate that men and they generally use circulatory ways of dealing with heat, such as radiation into the atmosphere, where as a males body uses convection and evaporation, meaning they sweat more to release heat which is then cooled off by the air. :)

Men have more muscle mass = higher body heat = more sweating

Even if you're not specifically engaging your muscles they continue on a low burn so to speak, to be ready for when they're needed, which creates heat.

ratbastid 05-11-2009 12:45 PM

But my question is... What possessed you to come share this wisdom with us, lilemmze, five and a half years after the last post on this thread?

I'm trying to imagine you sitting there, brimming with this information about sweat and gender. What would a person google if they were looking for somewhere to apply such knowledge? "Men Sweat More than Women", perhaps?? And there we are--the eighth result for that term! So... did you create accounts at the seven sites before us, to share this insight with them too?

Not that I'm not completely saying "Welcome!", but geez. This is a pretty obscure way to find yourself posting your first post at TFP...

Redjake 05-11-2009 04:58 PM

Some women sure as hell sweat less than men. Most of my coworkers are ladies and lots of them go to the gym every day at lunch and DON'T TAKE A SHOWER afterwards because they don't sweat enough to even have to take one. Are they doing mild weight training? Nope, intensive aerobics with weights and step-up platforms.

Hektore 05-11-2009 06:52 PM

So, I started a post about how I figured it's just a surface area to volume thing, men have more volume and less (relative) surface area to cool themselves with. So, I was curious and decided to check into it, as it turns out men just sweat more. I wish I had access to the full article to see if they proposed why women would have higher efficiency evaporative cooling.

As far as men and women cooling themselves via different methods, ie radiation for women, convection/sweat for men, I'm not really prepared to believe that right now. Where did you hear that? Could you post a link?
