New College students: what have you bought/forgot?

Im posting this now cause I don't think I'll remember this kinda stuff by the time next fall session starts.
I assume most of us are a few weeks into school now. What have you bought that you did not think of before you left and what have you forgot to bring.
Personally I've bought one of the big cans of gatorade mix. It makes the water fountain taste alot better. It also helps to have a water bottle so you can mix it without a spoon.
I should've brought another toothbrush, I almost dropped mine on the bathroom floor the other day.

k1ng 09-29-2003 10:50 PM

I forgot to bring an umbrella. I was cold and wet in class the other day.

Spinach_Indeed 09-30-2003 06:25 PM

I brought a fork and knife with me that I didn't bring the first semester. Take out is alot nicer when you don't pick it up with your fingers

dylanmarsh 10-01-2003 12:22 AM

Two-ply toilet paper, lysol, and some form of weaponry to claim your space from your roommate.

numist_net 10-01-2003 06:03 AM

if your not in a dorm, dont forget a trash can... instant food is always nice, bedding and clothes. Those are all you really need to live at college...

NatureBoy 10-01-2003 08:27 AM

Slightly off topic, but part of my problem was that I brought too much! Half of a mini-van and a half of a car worth of stuff that could have just as well stayed home.

The_Dude 10-01-2003 10:18 AM

actual trash bags > wal mart bags

my own phone cuz my room mate bitches if i dont put the phone back properly

some bathroom sandals

a hook or something to hang my towels sine my room seems to have none.

more hangers.

kmoney 10-02-2003 07:08 PM

Sweet Jesus, I've forgotten a ton of things. Chiefly among them, though, are detergent, dishwashing liquid, socks, pens, trash bags and an umbrella, among other things.

I live in an apartment though, so I have a bit more I need to gather up, for cooking and such.

majik_6 10-03-2003 02:19 PM

Last year I brought toiletries (some), magazines, sheets, books, and some school supplies.

I forgot: a pillow, an umbrella, any sort of utensil, plate, or cup, an alarm clock, a toothbrush (I believe), a TV, a jacket, medication, fingernail file/clippers (very important, especially since my right hand nails are long for guitar/bass), a phone book, and my e-mail password (I missed a week of one class because of that).

Ha, ha. I use Wal-Mart bags myself.

Salt, Dish soap, thumb tacs, a coat, fingernail clippers, pillow.

Don't forget water bottles, and an air freshener. Males are inherently gross.

Kyo 10-07-2003 05:48 AM

If you (and your roommate, if you have one) shower daily, the air freshener shouldn't be needed - even male grossness has its limits. In the off-chance that your roommate doesn't shower, dousing him with Lysol will alleviate the problem, as well as get your point across in a rather effective fashion.

If you're living in a dorm, there's very little you actually need - I'd be careful that you don't bring too much. A lot of things you think you'll eventually use, or would like to have 'just in case' simply won't be touched.

Neato 10-07-2003 06:22 AM

I don't have a room mate, but my ex-roomate pissed on the floor. The guys I live around now use the bathroom garbage as their own. It smells like they shit in it. One day they had a fight over some stinky meat.

Sorry, I guess I was only considering male humans. I suppose if you have wildlife living in your dorm, an airfreshener (or million) might come in handy. A hunting rifle might be more effective though.

SabrinaFair 10-07-2003 08:41 PM

Airfreshner is handy because in dorm rooms, ever smell emitted quickly fills that tiny cell and lingers there...forever. If you cook something in the microwave...you better like how it smells, cause its going to be there for a long time. I like Air Wick Air Neutralizer.

Oh, and I always forget trash bags every time I move. And they're a definte necessity.

nukeu666 10-14-2003 02:20 PM

1 kilo of snax
damn thing lasted only 2 weeks :(
so now im perpetually hungry

ill have to get 3 kilo's of snax nect time i go home

Chingal0 10-14-2003 04:28 PM

Can opener. Stuff to eat with / on. i was depressed when i started to make dinner but had to gd can opener. i cried.

sailor 10-20-2003 02:24 PM

The best thing I have bought so far is a futon. Its great for sleeping guests on, collapsing onto when you are too drunk to climb up the bunk ladder, and generally just lounging on.

Also, don't forget the duct tape. Invaluable stuff.

Actually, rubbermaid modular shelving might have to be the most useful. Vertical storage for all of your food and other various crap really opens up the room.

gabshu 10-25-2003 11:16 AM

I recomend one of those foam pads you put under the matress to make it more comfi. Our beds really sucked, thank god I dont have to be in a dorm anymore

hahaha 11-15-2003 11:03 PM

Hey another thing, not really something you need to bring, but make sure you move your room around before you start unpacking. My roommate and I moved our room around several weeks in, and it was a pain.

Fearless_Hyena 11-20-2003 12:54 AM

i have no idea why i ever forgot these, but i forgot to bring the basics: bath towel, toothbrush, silverware and a soap dish. seems like i brought everything else!!! it's not like you can't run out and get all those things, but if you forget 'em, the first few days kinda suck.

Jesus Malverde 11-20-2003 11:48 AM

Don't forget your own replacement razor blades...I've seen some pretty weird things while I've been here.

Seaver 11-22-2003 07:51 PM

the BEST thing I've bought since moving from a dorm to an apartment:

The George Foreman Grill... yes I know, you think you can do it on just a stovetop... but this is something NO bachelor should be without...

It is what helps keep my meals more than raman and mack&cheese.

Corneo 11-23-2003 10:37 AM

Yes the George Foreman Grill is a savior. I live on that grill.

wraithhibn 11-23-2003 05:05 PM

I have a love/hate relationship with my foreman. I love it for all of the meat that I cook on it, but I hate it because I want a real grill.

Don't forget cleaning supplies either. Your shit gets nasty and you have to clean it.

WarWagon 11-23-2003 07:04 PM

Shower shoes.

Posters - nothing worse than bare walls

Bag clips - Good for preserving tortilla chips/whatever when you run out of salsa

Extension cords/surge protectors

A fan - heat is blaring here in the winter, fan is a necessity

Febreeze - Laundry? What laundry?

Flashlight - Get up at 6:30, cant see where the hell I'm going.

Pepto Bismol - For those nights where a Big Don's Italian Sausage sub is the only thing that will suffice.

Networking cables - They hiked the price up to $20 locally because so many kids forgot them.

Condoms - Doh!

Shower caddy/crate - A lot easier to carry your soap, shampoo, washcloth, whatever to the shower/bathroom.
