How do I break from the daily grind?

All I do everyday is get up, hop on the net, eat, sit around on the net, play an occasional game, eat lunch, go to work, come home, hop on the net, take a shower, go to bed, rinse an repeat. It's hard to break from the daily routine. I really to get back into reading and learning new things. Any suggestions?

I know how you feel Jesus...

I get up, go to work, do nothing all day, go home and have dinner, then maybe get online and chat with friends or watch tv.

Boring!

What am I gonna do? I'm going to get my resume together and look for a new job. I'm going to check out joining a yoga class. Look into taking horseback riding classes again.

gather buddies and have a guys' night once a week. bar, poker, strip club, 10-dollar bets... do something new every week. if you can't come up with something new, repeat.
i subscribe to the belief that it's always fun if it's with good people, even if that means sitting at home and watching the Gamecocks.

I know what you mean. Since my daughter was born, my wife and I have spent a lot of time at home doing nothing. We are beginning to plan nightly outings with our daughter (sometimes just to do errands), and short weekend trips. It' s better than sitting at home and watching TV. We do not have a baby-sitter. So, we have very little, if any time alone.

plan something different. From 1 hour of reading time to 30 minutes walking around the block noticing the different things you don't have time to normally because you are rushing.

change is scary. change takes time and effort, but in the end it makes you better.

Put other activities into your daily planner!

Listen to motivational tapes or books on tape when driving back and forth to work.

"Just do it!"

Good call! If you don't schedule these things, it's WAY too easy to fall back to the normal, automatic patterns.

You do have a daily planner, don't you? No? Okay, so the first thing you'll do is... GO BUY A DAILY PLANNER.

I found the best way to deal with the daily grind is find a creative outlet. For me, it was with writing. I started out writing in a journal which spilled into short stories and then into poetry. Maybe take a class at a Community College that you would never even think of taking. Cooking? Gun Cleaning? Creative Writing? Just force yourself out into the world and find what drives you.

Join a gym, or sporting team. After the initial period of working out, afterwords you feel great. I've also found that working out relieves my stress, and makes me feel better about myself.

A sporting team is a great way to meet new friends, plus it gives you excercise, and something to look forward to during the week.

do you have any goals? working towards a goal and feeling challenged in doing so helps with that humdrum feeling. it keeps away that pointless feeling. i'd say find something you like and go with it. liven things up a bit. do something random every day.

Creative endeavors are a good way to use your time productively, if you're fine with being alone and spacy for long periods of time. Otherwise use the fuck out of your friends, meet their friends... life is a lot more varied and interesting when you're with fun people who like you.

Oh, and have you considered a martial art? Get healthy, stay busy, get out of the house, be more confident, meet interesting people, and start working toward a goal all at once...

Good luck! Being in a rut sucks and it's good that you want to break out - that's the first step to doing it.

I suggest forgeting about all of that unimportant crap, don't buy a daily planner, don't do yoga, don't do anything until you cant stand it anymore. After you are completely stir crazy and ready to pop and you hate your life, stop. Take a deep breath and go nuts. Once you are at that point you will find something that satiates your desire to grow, or crack and break up completely. Either way you will be much happier and it wont cost you a cent.

Take up kickboxing, fighting can be fun.
Or if you really want to break up the daily grind you can marry an Afghan girl and let her family move in with you. Its the nice thing to do.

You pretty much need to get out of your current surroundings. Go someplace new in town. I like to take a book and find a park that I haven't been to and just read. I talk to people who are jogging or walking by. Those are some nice afternoons and help to remind me why I love reading and being outside.
