just thought I'd bust the hymen on this new forum with this question.

me, I prefer to fly, but usually end up driving, due to cost.

I love flying, but I've been wanting to race across the desert in my car lately. I think I may get a chance at it this weekend.

I'm one of those flyers who prefer NOT having a non-stop flight (obviously on those long flights only - no sense in the short hops from L.A. to Las Vegas). I get cramped on the planes and like to stretch my legs. Besides, the best part is the take-off and landings!

Something about airports I really like...

I like to drive. I don't have anything against flying, and when driving isn't practical I will fly, but I like the feeling of actually journeying.

I prefer flying - if only to get me there faster. First class, when I can swing it (which has been, like, three times in my life).

flying gets you there fast, driving takes too much time, but driving is more fun. The best is to fly somewhere, rent a car, drive all over the place and fly out of a different city. We did this once, flying into albuquerque and out of las vegas after driving around for a couple of weeks. another good one was flying into l.a. and taking some time to drive up to san francisco, you can see a lot, and you can't beat a road trip!

Does downhill skiing count?
No?
What about windsurfing?

Sleeper trains are really good fun as long as you have the compartment to yourself, or you're with someone with whom you're happy to share I've spent many happy hours lying in bed on my back with my head half out of the wide open window; smoking, watching the stars to a whirring sort of clackety soundtrack.

i love the road trip. or used to, anyway. now with two young kids it's lost a bit of it's magic! but i used to love driving from michigan to the carolinas or florida or colorado with a couple friends. especially when time was not an issue. many stops in tiny towns.

when i travel to Ecuador i usually fly over newwark, it's the longest option i have, but i don't mind i enjoy the hours waiting in the airport. watching all the people, walking around a little. it takes me 24 hours compared to 16 hours if i fly with (iberia). but i prefer the longer route.

i also like travelling with the car, in ecuador i was the designated driver the last few travels. especially in the mountains it's fun, the view is beyond words.

Without a doubt my favorite mode is the train. The steady rumbling, the scenery [if you are going through a nice place] just combine to make magic for me. I think it's a shame another genearation may never ride the rails...except for those ugly urban ones.

I love the trains in Europe, but in the USA I guess I have to go with flying to go long distances. I am one of thos wackos who would like to see the gas tax go up a buck or two to fund train systems in America. I know everyone hates this, but if people understood how standard oil and GM got together to ruin public transportation in the US maybe more people would understand.

flying for me...especially on the very few airlines left that still let you smoke. Only a couple left that I can find.

I have had several long train trips and hated them. Melbourne to Sydney (in Australia) with 2 kids was murderous. Birminham to London (England) was fun, fast and I could smoke so it was cool

I love to drive especially my truck. Nothing beats driving 80 down an open highway at night with only my fiancees sweet voice and my hemi's sweet humm. Planes are ok but there not too cool unless your international cause the liquor is too expensive and I get nervous without at least a beer.

I think I would enjoy flying more if I could, you know, pilot. I don't like being a passenger much.

If I were better at it, I'd go everywhere on rollerblades.

I love to fly and it is usually cheaper in the long run. Trains are really great if you aren't pressed for time and are traveling through anywhere with scenery. We did the Copper Canyon train from Chichuahua to Los Mochis a few years ago and I'd love to take the train that runs across the Canadian Rockies sometime.

#1 -- Flying is my first choice since it's the quickest way to almost anywhere, but since 9/11, flying has been less popular with me because of all the lines at the airport

#2 -- I've only taken the train in the Northeast corridor, but it was a nice way to travel

#3 -- While driving is the least hassle (just get in and go), and it has other advantages, it's still usually the most travel time and I hate sitting in traffic.

Flying sucks. If you're not concerned with getting there in a hurry, the train is best, especially for vacation travel. The trip is part of the destination, and you're always in good shape when you disembark.

I've only been on a couple of long train trips, from San Diego to Seattle and back on the Coast Starlight, and a trip or two up and down Thailand on the state railroad. Great to watch the scenery roll past; you see things you'll never see from cars or even plains. Good people to talk to on the way; I always make friends on trains, and I'm not particularly outgoing so you see how it is.

Will always remember the Thai waiters in white shirts and bowties, carrying buckets of ice and beer up and down the aisle at sunset as we cruised out of Bangkok alongside the river and the evening breeze wafted in through the sleeping car's big open windows. Will also remember learning how to cope with a squat toilet in a train going 50 mph on rough track!
