Bad Danduff... I hate it a lot

Life is really depressing right now. In other words I believe I have the worlds biggest raging case on dandruff. Its christmas everyday for me and I Dont Get Any Presents. Ive used dandruff shampoo for weeks and weeks every single day to no avail. Is there a shampoo you guys use that really works. Please tell me. I know Im pittifull. Please help me.

The_Dude 04-24-2003 05:32 PM

head and dandruff dandruff shampoo.......and use it everyday when you shower.

yes, it works

cub4life78 04-24-2003 06:59 PM

Wash your hair every OTHER day if scalp is too dry. Let some oil build up. It's not as gross as it sounds really. Best of luck.

SexyCat 04-24-2003 08:19 PM

Use T-Gel by Neutrogena (I believe). It's a tar based shampoo and smells really bad and is brown/black in color, but it works pretty good and although it is medicated you can still buy it at Target and other stores.

Ashton 04-25-2003 12:21 AM

Do you use the same shampoo every day? rotating the shampoo you use each day helps stop buildup that can cause dandruff..... if it's a really bad case there's a perscription dandruff shampoo called Nizoral, ask your DR. :)

Yes, my brother had awful dandruff for years, and this stuff fixed him right up.

Dorian_S 04-25-2003 02:41 AM

If you've really tried everything... then go see a dermatologist. They can fix things like that, though it will be rather pricey.

Locobot 04-25-2003 03:00 AM

I'd shave your head and find a gentle non-abrasive floor wax--give it a good shinin'

Asuka{eve} 04-25-2003 06:57 AM

Uhhhh I think Ill pass on shaving my head....
But ill try the t-gel out. If not Ill get that prescription stuff. Thanks d00ds. C|40

FunkyLamb 04-25-2003 07:59 AM

I'll give you another vote for the T-Gel. That stuf is great I used it in High school and College and it kept the flakes away.

Me too, its the shit & Head & shoulders is balls.

snowy 04-25-2003 12:46 PM

Uggh...T-Gel smells like ass. Try looking for Neutrogena T-Sal. It's harder to find, but its active ingredient is salicylic acid instead of that awful tar stuff. It makes your hair soft and shiny whilst getting rid of your dandruff. I would also recommend a bottle of Scalpicin for itchy/bad spots. I used to get dandruff so bad I would also get cradlecap (babies get it when their dry skin doesn't flake off right). The other thing that helps is having short hair, if you don't have short hair already. I've tried just about every dandruff shampoo known to man, including prescription stuff, so if you have any specific questions, fire away.

liquid_dreams 04-25-2003 04:13 PM

that t gell stuff works prtty well for me you might as well give it a try

Asuka{eve} 04-25-2003 05:44 PM

ill take what you guys said and ill arm myself against white christmas.

R-Dubb604 04-26-2003 11:21 AM

i have dandruff, and i have tried 3 different brands of shampoo with only one that actually works. Scrap head and shoulders, scrap denorex, the one that works for me is SELSUN BLUE

Asuka{eve} 04-27-2003 10:14 PM

Omg ... today I bought Extra strength T-gel and T-gel overnight dandruff treatment its WORKING. Usually when I use head and shoulders my dandruff comes back in 30 minutes but now its seems to be going away. THANKS GUYS!

R-Dubb604 04-28-2003 09:49 AM

ill have to go and get some, thanks for the feedback

creepyskip 04-28-2003 11:32 AM

T-Gel is great stuff. I would use it every other day and don't use anything inbetween. Most people don't need to shampoo everyday unless they have super-greasy hair. The salycylic acid dandruff shampoos work for mild cases- but the T-Gel and extra strength t-gel are better.

Mango 04-28-2003 02:38 PM

I had nasty dandruff. I tried it all, shaved my head, selsun blue, tea tree oil, head n shoulders, t gel..... Eventually I was turned on to "Nizoral" (I don't know if it is available in USA but it is in Canada) I used this stuff three times the first week I had it then once a week for a month then stopped. My itchy scalp and dandruff were gone. Occsionally my head gets itchy so I pull it out for a single use and the itch & druff is gone. This stuff makes Head and shoulders, selsun blue and all the others a waste of time.

scope 04-28-2003 03:45 PM

Whatever you do, do NOT use Head and Shoulders Shampoo.

Now that that's been stated, here's my story:
I have black hair, and a few years ago I had severe dandruff problems. Even a bit of dandruff showed up vividly against my hair. It was horrible!

Dandruff is basically caused by a fungal-type infection of your scalp. Its actually more common than you think, its just not visible on most people.

Nizoral works well against dandruff, but its not permanent. After a few weeks, it'll be back. You could either take Nizoral over a long term of time, or you can go to your doctor and have him/her prescribe you an anti-dandruff solution.

Asuka{eve} 04-28-2003 05:24 PM

A fungal type infection....... it makes sense..... why it cant be cured only controlled. I was just wondering when I had massive dandruff my scalp was so pale it was pretty much albino white. Since using T-gel I seem to be getting more normal pinkish skin instead. Was the the white scalp because of fungus?

Nhanced1 04-28-2003 07:42 PM

Scalpicin? thanks owl, Ive had some itchy spots recently, especially out in the sun. I was just using some stuff we have here.

jets 04-29-2003 06:10 AM

I had the same problem with mixed results from dandfuff shampoos. I asked my hair dresser about it and he told me about a product Aveda makes. It's called "Scalp Remedy" and works very well for me. It's kinda expensive but well worth it, my bottle has lasted a year now and it's still half full. It's in a bottle with a kinda eyedrpper thingy...after a shower I put a few dabs on my scalp and massage it in. Don't overdo it. It may take 2 or 3 applications of it to rid the snow but it really works for me!!!

Eviltree 04-29-2003 06:43 PM

I found that selsun blue works for me, I tried vinegar, but thats stuff is worse than the tar. Dandruff isn't cool.

redrose2 04-29-2003 10:48 PM

My beau had it soo bad in highschool it was actually in his eyebrows and sideburns. It didn't help that his genetics gave him bushy brows and thick hair. Anyway he eventually went to a dermitologist( skin doctor) for diagnosis and treatment. It turns out that his dandruff is partly genetic in that his naturally dry skin and thick hair actively promotes dandruff. So he was given some pretty strong shit which contains the same ingredents as dandruff shampoos, but only MUCH stronger. One was even a cream he could apply to his eyebrows at night. it's been 3 months since and he hasn't had a lick of fluf save if he forgets to shower for a couple days... eeeeeeewwwwwwwww. A side note is that one of those three perscriptions smelled HORRIBLE.. so be sure to rotate such that you don't go out on a date after using the stinky stuff.

MSD 05-01-2003 06:57 PM

T-gel works well, teh Salycilic acid stuff works well, an dSelsun Blue works well. I remember the good old days when repeated use of Selsun would actually turn your hair blue.

SweetVroom 05-01-2003 09:20 PM

t-gel works wonders, but it smells bad, so i use Biosilk, that stuff smells like peppermints, and the conditioner.. well its the best i've ever used, i'm serious too, you can FEEL the differnece after about u leave it in your hair for five minutes.

Randle 05-05-2003 11:12 PM

yeah, I used t-gel for a while, that didn't really help my dandruff. Then I tried the new head and shoulders "refresh" and that actually worked better... my scalp is strange

FuddMan 05-26-2003 07:38 AM

I hear T-gel smells, but does it leave a funk in your head?

WhoaitsZ 05-26-2003 10:25 AM

T-gell does indeed stink but it works for most people. maybe a light conditioner afterwards to help with the smell? I'm unsure if it would go against the purpose or not.
i've had this problem my whole life. i've used t-gell many times, head and shoulders, antibiotic shampoos....

i fear im screwed

gonadman 05-26-2003 07:27 PM

Dandruff is indeed a fungal infection. The tar in T-gel is an anti-mitotic that prevents the fungi from growing. But a better product is the Nizoral shampoo- it is an antifungal. Sold over the counter 1% solution. Also sold by perscription in a 2% solution. After you have used it a couple of weeks(3x a week) you will only need to repeat it once every 2-3 weeks.

HiThereDear 05-29-2003 08:17 PM

I've tried head & shoulders, then selsun blue, and finally i found T-Gel, and it's the only product that I've ever found that was actually worth what it cost. Got rid of my dandruff almost instantly and now I just use it twice a week or so, and its fine. And even though it smells bad, just use your regular shampoo after that - can't smell nothing bad then. I love T-Gel. mmmm, T-Gel.

tomaslee 12-10-2007 06:00 PM

I had the same problem gosh I though I never got dandruff before and when I got it it was so bad that I was even afraid of brushing my hair, well I tried Head and shoulders and I really felt that it made it worst, and plus it left a build up on my scalp, then I tries pert plus and it worked a little bit for like 2 days and it came back worst until somebody told me about T- gel and from the first day no flakes anymore, the only problem I still have some itchiness but it is not bad I think is due to the cold weather but I would recomend T-gel worst awesome!!

dlish 12-10-2007 06:54 PM

nizoral.. thats the shit. really. works wonders.

*Nikki* 12-10-2007 07:17 PM

I really hope this guy doesn't still have Dandruff being that this thread is FOUR YEARS OLD.

Selsun Blue really worked great for me, head and shoulders did nothing. I still use it once a week maybe once every two weeks, and have loved it for the past two years.
