i wont let this thread die in peace...
she-lish is an APD an accredited practising dietitian. she says that there is nothing wrong with bananas for normal healthy people. but usually she advises that people eat half a banana first and then the other half later because of the blood sugar spike. this is especially the case with people with problems with their sugar levels. on the other hand the potassium lowers blood pressure which is a good thing. of course to much of a good thing is bad for you, so take it easy on the bananas if you're not burning it off.. starigt from the horses mouth. p.s. she-lish NEVER recommends atkins diet unless its absolutely necesary - like someone required to crash diet for health reasons, but usually its very short term stuff. my 2 cents worth |
I have a banana every morning on my way to work, simply because it is the easiest to eat and tastes great. I don't really know if its good for me or not, but I do know that it accelerates my metabolism. My wife says I'm really skinny now. And if you know me, that means REALLY skinny. I disagree though.

The sugar in fruits is primarily fructose, with a hint of glucose, and some other minority di and polysacherides.
*just deleted loads of stuff by accident* Fructose isn't bad for you per se (its quite good when you get it from fruit sources), but when mixed with glucose (as sucrose/table sugar, or as high fructose corn syrup) then you have a recipe for disaster. In a nutshell fructose is metabolised by the liver, whereas glucose is taken by all the cells in the body. Your cells use the glucose, whilst the fructose gets bumped around your body to your fat cells and other nasty goings on. |
I can't believe that I haven't seen this thread yet! What's with all the banana hate?!
Geez, over 5g of the carbs in bananas aren't even sugar, and nearly 3g of them are actually fibre! And fructose? Slow burning sugar. And you try to find me another "sugary snack" that offers over 30% of your daily recommended intake of B6 (helps break down sugar and starches!) , over 10% of your potassium (good for bone density, etc.), and nearly 20% of your vitamin C (antioxidant, anticancer). If you do, my guess is that it's another fruit. Bananas are a healthful food for most people, whether or not they're on a diet. They're great for breakfast as they give your body much-needed energy while providing a few nutrients related to good general health. Find me a good reason why someone in good health wouldn't benefit from 100 calories/30 g of carbs for breakfast. A banana barely has 10% of the recommended intake of carbs.* Geez, what have we become? Hating what's good for us.... Come on, bananas are a great breakfast food. Oh, btw, bananas have just over 1g of protein. Not bad for a fruit, really. *all based on a 2,000 calorie diet. |

I mean... :uhh: ...you wanna start a fan club? Maybe a Facebook Group? |
Bananas, as all fruits, contain sugars, yes. But the fructose in them are honestly better for you than glucose (processed white sugar, etc). Also, with fruit, you get a lot of vital vitamins and minerals. The reason why bananas have a higher caloric content is because it doesn't contain as much water in it, so it's starchy. But honestly, you shouldn't stress over a banana or two.

I'm dropping in to say that I just ate a banana. It was perfectly ripped, still very firm and sweet. That's a good god damn banana!!
|
now i feel like a banana after reading this after so long
|
I'm still waiting for mine to ripen. I think they'll be good to go this evening.
|
Mine are too ripe. I think I am going to make banana bread. Not terribly healthy, which is why the finished product will get wrapped up, stuck in the freezer, and given away later. I admit that I do put whole wheat flour and walnuts in my banana bread, so it's not too awful for you.
And BG/dlish: I appreciate your efforts here to clear up the nutritional misinformation running through this thread. Also, while bananas are delicious and healthy, they do not make an ideal breakfast. A person needs something more substantial to fire up their body for the day ahead. Protein should always be on the list at breakfast. |
^^ So ... sausage biscuit from Bojangles is out of the question then? Causer thats what I had ...
