I need help with concentration and memory recall

It's been a long time since I've had to study anything. Now I have to study and pass a Novell recertification test by the end of October. I am focused on this now so I have plenty of time incase I need it. So far, it appears I will.
I must be getting a bit old, because I can't seem to memorize the text from my study materials. When I get to the end of a chapter I've just read and I do the test questions I only get about half of them right. I need something to help me concentrate and memorize the information so I can use it when I take my exam.
I've heard Ginko Biloba is supposed to help with brain function. Is there any truth to this?
Any ideas?

Ginseng is supposed to help increase alertness and recall.

Its classified as an adaptogen which means its supposed to help your body adapt to physical and mental stress as well.

Reading the chapter once and getting half the question right isnt that bad. Pretty sure you didnt read everything just once back in your school days and get a 100%. Make brief notes of important points that usually helps. or just read it a million times

Read through the texts and write down key questions on little notes you put in a bowl. Then whenever you walk around in your home you pick up a note, read the question and answers it, if the answer is correct you put it in a second bowl, if it's wrong or you don't remember the answer you put it back in the bowl and look up the right answer in the text.
When the first bowl is empty, you start the same routine with the second bowl only this time you look up all subinformation about the questions aswell.
This tequniqe has made wonders to my test scores.

Good luck!

No herbal supplement has been proven to do anything significant but there are 100s of millions of $ spent in advertising them...

There are many good ideas on this thread already to help in learning from a textbook. Here's some others:
* Take notes as you read.
* Highlight a sentence or two on every page or every section that summarizes the main idea of the section.
* Before reading a chapter, look at the index, outline, or the chapter header to see what the chapter is about. Copy down the outline and as you read the chapter, track which points you are now learning and what you've learned.
* Read aloud. Recite what you are writing aloud when you take notes. It has been proven that the more senses you involve when studying, the quicker you internalize. By reading aloud, you involve your auditory senses. Reading aloud while you write adds the tactile sensation of writing to the auditory sensations.

Chew gum while you're learning and look up the "method of loci" mnemonic device which will be a MASSIVE help.

different brains work different ways, try as many means as you can and one of them will work for you sooner or later. I looked for a long time before I found what worked for me in a memory book, the more outrageous the mnemonic the better, like the pattern of lines on the Treble clef is "Elvis' Guitar Broke Down Forever", that's one. A good book is "stop forgetting" but sadly I don't remember the author. . .

I find that if i get a good nights sleep (around 8 hours). Too much or too little can affect my memory. Then if i stick to a good diet it helps too. Carbs are brain food, but make sure you dont over do the carb thing or you will get fat....unless you are very active. But complex carbs are good, in moderation.

Not sure of any over the counter or herbal remedies caue i have never tried them.

what i do is just read the chapter once in a quiet room highlighting everything that is CRUCIAL and then go back to it and read the highlighted content. Once that is done i do the test reading each question and answering thinking it is right, but as i answer i make sure that every single question makes sense as it appears answered.

Concentration will come into play once there is no play around your home base...

later.

I took an amino acid called l-glutamine for a whle and it seemed to improve my memory and overall enthusiasm for life.
Maybe it was placebo, but maybe not.

This is a subject I've given a lot of attention to.

For me, the most detracting thing about studying something is the distractions . Even if I am in a quiet place with nothing external interrupting, I find that I interrupt myself with worries over other things going on in my life (money, marriage, kids, getting old ... the usual crap)

One of the neurotransmitters that does help "calm you down" so you're not distracted by things going on in your head is Seratonin. Seratonin levels can be raised by taking medications in the SSRI class; including Prozac, Zofrin, etc.

Protein also increases seratonin levels in the brain. Carbohydrates stimulate the bodies production of insulin, which "clears the way" for the amino acids in the protein to get to the brain. So, try studying at night after a nice big dinner of Steak 'n 'Taters!

Another technique that has worked very well for me is the "Rule of Three". I never get anything the first time I read it. If I'm "chapter studying", I'll read through the chapter once, making little or no effort to assimilate the information, just to vaguely familiarize myself with it.

I'll read through it a second time, more closely, with a more concerted effort at (NOT memorizing!) but understanding what is being said.

The third time I read it (preferably, the next day) it all makes perfect sense.

Another great technique is to imagine that you are the teacher, and you have to explain it to yourself. Ask yourself questions, and if you don't know the answer, write it down and find out. If you do know the answer, explain it to yourself like you're a 2-year old. You'll quickly find yourself to be an expert on any subject you want.

Excellent suggestions everyone. Thank you. Maybe someday I will just be able to swallow a pill that will allow me to remember things better. Until then I'll just have to keep working at it. BTW, I read the study materials once and am on my second time through. It appears things are starting to sink in and make sense. When I started studying I was feeling pretty hopeless. I actually have a positive attitude now!
