Define 'true friend'

Hi,

I was just wondering whats is your definition of a 'true friend'. I guess that for me, a true friend is someone in who I can rely on, no matter the circumstances; someone that will help me, and give me advice even if i dont ask for it; someone who will present to me the facts and the truth even if i might not like it.

How bout you?

lurkette 08-02-2003 02:51 PM

For me, a true friend is someone who doesn't judge me, who accepts me as I am, and who shares their feelings and is open to me sharing mine. It's someone I can call at 2:30 in the morning if there's a crisis. Someone you can not talk to for 3 days or 3 months and still pick up like no time has passed.

Katyblu 08-02-2003 02:55 PM

A true friend is someone who is always there, someone who supports me even though they don't like what I am doing. Someone who will tell me like it is and expect me to be a grown up and make my own decision. Someone I can communicate with about everything and accepts me. Someone that I don't have to talk to everyday... they are there whether its been one week or one year.

spectre 08-02-2003 03:03 PM

To me, a true friend is someone who will tell me if I'm about to do something stupid, but at the same time, won't judge me for it. They have to be able to keep things that I say in confidence a secret. They should also be there if there's an emergency.

Sadly, there aren't too many people like that.

AxelF 08-02-2003 03:38 PM

We should ask applejack, his mother knows. (According to his thred "spammed" in the newbie section.

Otherwise you're all listing the right qualifications. But I would also like to add that for me a true friend gives you some slack, in the sense that you don't expect too much of each other. We can't live our friendships like a marriages, we need our space and a good friend gives it. Too intense friendships tend to end abbruptly.

With time a friendship with some slack turns into true friendship because there was respect for each others individuality.

Nisses 08-02-2003 05:09 PM

a true friend is a part of you, every much as you are a part of him.

redravin40 08-02-2003 06:17 PM

A good friend will come and bail you out when you wind up in jail.
A true friend will be sitting next to you going, "Damn, that was fun."

saucy knave 08-02-2003 09:49 PM

A true friend practically becomes family to you, even though you're not related.

BlueBongo 08-02-2003 10:22 PM

a true friend is honest, non-judging, understanding, and is very much a part of me. (gotta agree with saucy on that one)

Cynthetiq 08-02-2003 11:24 PM

a true friend? my wife.... sick, healthy, rich, poor, angry, happy, handsome, ugly, stinky, perfumey, smart, stupid.....

Konichiwaneko 08-03-2003 12:23 AM

a true friend loses the label. He's a brother by then.

rainheart 08-03-2003 12:52 PM

Someone who will never sell you out at any opportunity.

koli70 08-03-2003 02:04 PM

Just someone who is there to listen to you. That you can talk to about anything or nothing. Someone u can trust will always be honest. Someone that loves you no matter what even if u like DBZ :)

Slims 08-03-2003 02:54 PM

A true friend is someone who is there for you when you need them with no strings attached.

Rodney 08-03-2003 03:27 PM

I agree, a true friend is like a brother or sister. If you don't see them for a month or year or five years, it doesn't matter; the moment you do see them, it's like no time passed.

Had one like that in high school, we were friends for 20 years even though we lived 200 miles apart much of that time. He's dead now, dammit.

How do you get to be friends that way? By going through a lot of stuff together, helping each other out, sharing a lot of good times and bad, always being there for each other when the other calls. Over time the two of you might grow apart in interests, but it doesn't matter; by that time you've got so much shared history and trust that you're part of each other. Like a brother or sister.

MSD 08-03-2003 11:03 PM

A true friend will help you bury a body and not ask questions.

Your friend obviously lives in you, and that...is true.

Shades 08-04-2003 09:38 AM

Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies.

irseg 08-04-2003 10:11 AM

Damn, I was going to say what I thought of the matter, but everyone else pretty much nailed it. Sometimes it's creepy how much my true friends know about me, they'll know how I will react to a given situation before I do sometimes. And vice versa.

It's just a shame they are so few & far between. I know a bunch of people to kill time with if I have nothing better to do, but when it comes to true friends who I genuinely trust, I have two. And at the moment, the closest one is 1200 miles away. Costs me a fortune in plane tickets and phone bills, but it's well worth it.

mingusfingers 08-04-2003 01:39 PM

We have fun together, enjoy hanging around, and respect each other.

nowthen 08-04-2003 06:26 PM

I saw my friend a couple of months back, before that I had'nt seen him in over a year. It was like no time had passed at all. Thats when I knew he was my best friend.

Minx 08-05-2003 08:03 AM

A true friend is someone who is always with you even if they are miles away. Someone who can laugh and cry with you, someone you can relax and be yourself with without having to watch what you say or do. A true friend is there at three in the morning when you need a ride home. A true friend will listen to you, console and comfort you even if they disagree with you. A true friend will be honest without being cruel, supportive without being smothering, and will accept you for who you are not who you think you should be.
True friends are golden.

Double D 08-05-2003 10:22 AM

As corny as it sounds, when I was a kid, I liked this saying about friendship:

A friend is the first to be at your side, and the last to leave.

giblfiz 08-05-2003 01:12 PM

a true freind will take a bullet for you.

BentNotTwisted 08-05-2003 02:09 PM

Just about all the comments here apply to me. The one that applies the most is a friend I see rarely, but when I do see them or talk to them it's like we just talked the day before. My Best Man at my wedding is like that. We talk a couple of times each year, but it's always a great chat. Last month he called me and asked me for ideas on how to propose marriage to his girlfriend. So I guess another way to describe a true friend is someone who asks for your advice when they are going to do something very important. They might not take the advice, but at least they thought you were special enough to ask.

Mad_Gecko 08-05-2003 02:15 PM

My true Friends are too scattered now.

They are men I can say "I love you" to and understand, and they are women that I say "I love you" and not worry about sex.

Unfortunately they are few and far between.

When I was told as a child you will be lucky to have more than two true friends, I thought they were joking. Now I know I'm so very lucky.

Dedicated to those who love me.

gnort 08-05-2003 08:50 PM

I think i only have one "true friend" and i havent seen/talked to her in almost 2 weeks...it's getting kinda lonely

MacGnG 08-05-2003 10:14 PM

to me it's someone that you can always trust, someone who is there for you, someone who will just understand.

laxative 08-05-2003 11:25 PM

yesterday i helped a guy spread gravel on his driveway. This morning he showed up and mowed my lawn.

frozenstellar 08-06-2003 05:06 AM

a person who is there for the good times - but is with you when shit hits the fan. i have only one true friend, and damn am i glad i have her. i cant imagine not having her there.

agentsmith 08-06-2003 09:51 AM

to me the most important thing in a friendship is loyalty. I've lost too many friends and I've noticed that a lack of loyalty is the big issue.

fuzzix 08-11-2003 04:44 AM

Someone who I actually like, who does their best to respect my beliefs and eccentricities. And who is dead honest.

GoldenOuroboros 08-11-2003 05:08 AM

and eccentricities you have fuzz..

Someone who's able to discuss things outside their world and not hound you for it. Someone who can respect you and give advice.. And someone who can take a good joke every now and then :D

s8ins child 08-11-2003 06:07 AM

A true friend will give you weed for free!

nash 08-11-2003 07:33 AM

A true friend is someone who if they have a problem, I'll listen and offer up solutions and if it's ok with them, I'll "fix it myself". And if not, I'll stick with them til the end. If they're in trouble, I'll protect them, stick up for them, and hide them if it comes to that. If someone is "messing" with them, I'll "take care of it".

I think a true friend to me is not about what they can offer you, but about what you're willing to sacrifice for them. How they get to that point with me is different for different people. In the end, I think it's all about loyalty and trust.

dragon2fire 08-11-2003 08:11 AM

a friend is some one who will help you move. a true friend who help you move dead bodys

nullPointer 08-11-2003 10:37 AM

dragon2fire...very funny, never heard that before...

A true friend is someone with whom you can be completely honest and whom you know will give you honest input.

Jaseca 08-12-2003 05:37 PM

A friend will bail you out of jail, a true friend will be in jail with you.

Othello 08-13-2003 04:18 PM

- Someone who would put everything aside to help you out when needed,
- Will not be the one who call just when they need something from you,
- Someone who you can open your soul too.

wry1 08-23-2003 11:52 AM

Simply put: a "True" friend is a person who you feel is as much a part of yourself as is possible. Someone who, when you're not around, you feel the loss of.

But as for me, I always went with the same one dragon2fire went with....

A friend will help you move; a true friend will help you move the body.
