What have you learned lately?

I learn life's lessons much slower than everyone else, I think. It leaves me acting like a child, emotionally, sometimes, but at least I learn the lesson. Here are a few things that I've just, at 24, learned.

Nobody cares if your feeling down. It's nobody's responsibility to make you happy but yourself.

Don't talk too much. People might think you don't know when to shut up. Listen twice as much as you talk during conversations.

Don't lie. Every lie comes out eventually, and the longer between the lie and the telling of the truth will only make it worse.

If you fuck up, accept it, learn from it, and move on. Don't dwell on it.

Even when life seems crappy, you probably have a roof overhead, food in the fridge, transportation available, and people to talk to.

What have you learned lately?

warmingup2prose 07-24-2003 11:42 PM

i've learned never to feel guilty...it wastes so much time.
i've also learned that i am the single most important thing to myself, and that nothing else can be important to me if i am not.

thanks for posting this thread.

I've recently learned that if I get caught on the TFP at work, I will get into trouble. And here are a few other jewely from the recent past:

1. If your wife is taking a bath and you are drying your hair at the sink...put the dryer down and leave the room immediately, at least until the urge to toss the dryer into the tub subsides.

2. Laugh and the world laughs with you.....cry and the world laught AT you.

3. If you feed your dog a chocolate bar, you better have a bucket and a mop handy.

4. Tossing a Baby Ruth into your friends new swimming pool during his house warming party is only funny to the person who did it (me).

5. No matter how many times you watch the same porno movie...the music still SUCKS!

Valuable lessons, to say the least.

johnnymysto 07-25-2003 06:29 AM

And in keeping with geodaro, I've learned that the IT group where I work doesn't monitor my internet activity very closely. But, they probably will now!

And, I've learned that direct confrontation can be both easy and productive. It gets easier the more you do it.

tikki 07-25-2003 06:48 AM

I've learned that women are confusing as fuck, and I have sworn them off for a while. Nothing but computers for me.

Cynthetiq 07-25-2003 11:15 AM

I have learned that renovating a home takes time, much more time than I think that they need, not to mention having to get approvals, permits, and other red tape.

-Anders 07-25-2003 11:58 AM

I have learned that missing someone very dear to you hurts more than it does good, and eventualy someone else will come along and make you feel alot better.

Thank you Cecilie

bermuDa 07-25-2003 02:05 PM

i've learned to not trust anybody you don't already know and trust. everyone is out to get something from you.

hobo 07-25-2003 09:29 PM

I learned that I should really figure out a system of thinking for several seconds before I say anything to a girl.

anti fishstick 07-25-2003 10:26 PM

at 20, i finally learned i can say "no" to a guy, and it'll be ok. don't think twice about seeming 'rude' when doing so. if YOU dont like it, or feel obligated, *say no*.

Stiltzkin 07-25-2003 10:27 PM

I have learned that I essentially know nothing. Ditto for everyone else in the world.

I've also learned that I am a damn fool in every way imaginable

I've also learned that... oh screw it. I have to go sulk for a while.

almostaugust 07-26-2003 12:24 AM

Yeah, Bryanzera, im with you on the lying thing. It seems like nothing but insincerity and playing people false is the worst kind of human trait. I remeber reading somewhere this dude was saying how he never lied cause it had something about it that was close to the grave, close to death (I think it was Joseph Conrad). I remebered this cause, i could empathise with it to some extent. Lying complicates life and relationships and all the other shit in between.

Semi-Normal 07-26-2003 09:15 PM

I've learnt that all the advice of my parents and teachers that my cynical younger self shrugged off as cliched bullshit is cliched because it's actually true.

I've also learnt that people will think better of you if you just take responsibility for your fuck-ups rather than try to make excuses and convince them it's not your fault.

Most importantly I've learnt that just because I'm out of my teens and into my 20s doesn't mean I'm done growing up yet.

First of all, all of this was dead on.

I've learned to stand tall. No matter how tough things are, just keep on fighting and don't give up.

Heh. And here I was thinking I was unusual for this.

Recently?

I'm not fond of responsability, and I tend to grab it in situations where it's inappropriate.

Example: figuring that it's not a good idea for someone to move closer to me so we could enjoy each other, so not suggesting it. Inappropriate, as that should have been her call.

Stupid but:

You get what you pay for, Ahem lemon cars ahem

GunslingerCold 07-27-2003 03:12 AM

Ive learned:
That if you dont stand up for yourself, nobody will
That confidence is the most important thing you can have
That you need to laugh off bad things that happen to you

I got a laugh out of most of these :p
But the Baby Ruth had me rolling around.. brought back memories of Caddy Shack

I think that maybe I have learned something and that I just don't realise it.. or I just plain haven't

We're alive for the first time, for the last and for a short time. I remind myself that everyday.

I'm no better or worse than the highest of the high and the lowest of the low. Talk to some homeless, you'd be amazed what they'll say.

Joy is the only measure of success. Property, money and power mean nothing in the end.

What if all in the conversation follow this rule?

-In the thread sense, I've learned that on the show 'Trading Spaces', they have a team of fellas to help. It's not just the designers, families, and one carpenter! Crazy, I know.

-People, for the most part, are self absorbed.

-When you make a small move to help someone, it can really brighten up their day.

-Starting the day with a smile, even fake, can work wonders.

-Nothing is more aggravating than a blown speaker.

asudevil83 07-27-2003 05:20 PM

i've learned that i've got a bunch of learning still to do.

i'm destined for a tough life...much like many others.

as much as i want to grow up, i'll always need to be a kid at heart. otherwise i'll die of boredom

true love is harder to find than it seems

dwelling on failure does nothing to help the situation...its better to just get over it and move on

music can be the cure for just about everything.

maximus 07-27-2003 06:25 PM

never love somebody....

Well it's easy if there are three people in the converstion - if everyone talks an equal amount then all three will listen twice as much as they talk.

I don't think that rule is supposed to be taken literally though.
