How do you keep the BLUBBER off if you're surfin' the net and driving a desk all day?

Personally, I 'm into weight training, cardio, and yoga. I'm interested in hearing about other people's training philosophys and practices.

In my case I like to train intensely, using high intensity training for weights (HIT) and a mix on interval training and heart rate zone for cardio. This doesn't mean I train the same way all the time or am a slave to a particular idea. HIT is not the full answer either, as volume training and other tricks are good for a refreshing switch. I also beleive your weight training should be based on squats, dead lifts, and big compound movements.
As for yoga , I do Iyengar which employs static holds for several miuntes. I'm pretty sure it has improved my body awareness and balance.
With regards to diet , I'm a grazer, I eat 5-6 small meals per day and strive to avoid simple sugars and saturated fats. Beyond that I eat alot of protein and monitor carbs, but not too tightly as I develop binge inducing craving after 3 days.

Anyway, I want to discuss your ideas on training and diet, what ever tickles your fancy.

And I want hear about the struggle!! About successes and difficulties!!

I run. I took jogging as my phys ed in college and have been running ever since. Usually average around 30 miles a week.

Mr. Mojo 04-22-2003 01:13 PM

I go to the gym for a hour and a half every morning. Its like my cup of coffee that wakes me up. I do 30 minutes of cardio, and 30 minutes of weights. The last half hour is showering and getting ready for work.
On the weekends, if the weather is nice i take my bike out.
I eat healthy at work with fruits and veggie. But sometimes that Whopper w/cheese is calling.
I liked yoga, theres just not enough time for me.

To keep myself active, I play basketball with friends, go running, rollerblading, and I do push-ups before bed.

I actually like running once I am doing it. It is just getting up and going that is the tough part sometimes.

Bigwahzoo 04-22-2003 01:40 PM

I have recently taken up running. I am not very good but I try to run a couple miles at a time.

I work on the 5th floor. I refuse to use the elevator. Problem solved. :)

Preface

_

This is not a normal diet book, and I am not a normal diet book author.

I'm not a doctor. Nor am I a nutritionist, psychologist, sports hero, gourmet chef, or any of the other vocations that seem to qualify people to tell you how to lose weight.

I'm an engineer by training, a computer programmer by avocation, and an businessman through lack of alternatives. From grade school in the 1950's until 1988 I was fat--anywhere from 30 to 80 pounds overweight. This is a diet book by somebody who spent most of his life fat.

The absurdity of my situation finally struck home in 1987. ``Look,'' I said to myself, ``you founded one of the five biggest software companies in the world, Autodesk. You wrote large pieces of AutoCAD, the world standard for computer aided design. You've made in excess of fifty million dollars without dropping dead, going crazy, or winding up in jail. You've succeeded at some pretty difficult things, and you can't control your flippin' weight?''

Through all the years of struggling with my weight, the fad diets, the tedious and depressing history most fat people share, I had never, even once, approached controlling my weight the way I'd work on any other problem: a malfunctioning circuit, a buggy program, an ineffective department in my company.

As an engineer, I was trained to solve problems. As a software developer, I designed tools to help others solve their problems. As a businessman I survived and succeeded by managing problems. And yet, all that time, I hadn't looked at my own health as something to be investigated, managed, and eventually solved in the same way. I decided to do just that.

This book is a compilation of what I learned. Six months after I decided being fat was a problem to be solved, not a burden to be endured, I was no longer overweight. Since then, my weight hasn't varied by more than a few pounds. I'm hungry less often at 145 pounds than I was at 215. I look better, feel great, and have more energy for the things I enjoy. I spend only a few minutes a day maintaining this happy situation. And I know I'll be able to control my weight from now on, because I have the tools I need, the will to use them, and the experience to know they work.

The tools are now in your hands.

Live long and prosper.

I put less food in my mouth,
walk at least 30 mins a day plus daily workouts,
and engage in outdoor activities as much as possible.

spectre 04-22-2003 04:43 PM

I have an obscenely high metabolism. Plus, every day before classes I walk at least 2.5 miles (usually more). I also take the stairs everywhere in school, including the parking lot (I'm usually on the fifth floor). I also spend 30 minutes to an hour working out once I get home and I spend another 30 minutes to an hour working out before I go to bed.

sapiens 04-22-2003 05:36 PM

I started running recently- Good exercise for me and my dog. Before that I biked a lot. Has anyone ever ridden RAGBRAI? (The bike ride across the state of Iowa).

The Hackers Diet is a unique perspective. I like the quirky way he has broken everydown to systems and spreadsheets. It's like looking at a physiology text with a sense of humour.

TheDave87 04-22-2003 07:04 PM

Diet Mountain Dew and Mountain biking. Also i park the truck at school as far away as i can so i have to walk.

World's King 04-22-2003 07:11 PM

I don't eat.

It's just that easy.

HeyAgain 04-22-2003 07:18 PM

Increased my daily cardio.
Weightlifting three times a week.
Eliminiated most of the sugar that I once craved and reduced my carbs intake.
Increased protein intake.

G_Whiz 04-22-2003 07:59 PM

Simple answer, I don't.

Basically, keep my calorie count down and try to get some sort of cardio in every day. That's why I hate bad weather, I prefer to walk.

Spidey 04-22-2003 08:33 PM

i do what you do gjbourke i go to the gym and do both cardio and weights for about an hour and a half then walk up and down hill everyday to university. I tired to limit myself of sugars and fatty foods. So far i've been able to not gain anything, but haven't lost an aweful lot either.

Ashton 04-22-2003 10:00 PM

I have a fast metabolism, I eat anything I want anytime I want.... Drink lots of Vodka and eat late evey night... and still stay at a even 175 pounds... I couldn't gain a ounce to save my life. :D

Dragonlich 04-22-2003 10:15 PM

I'm like Ashton in this... I eat a lot, compared to most other people I know. I don't eat candy, however, nor cookies or anything. Just breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I'm 1.90 meters tall, and have been 75 kg since I stopped growing (18/19).

gjbourke 04-22-2003 10:43 PM

Spidey, you're at victoria? I'm at Otago. Small world.
:D
