Facing injustice

A dozen police officers entered the office. My friend - a bright, happy and caring man - worked there. The cuffs went on. At that moment began two and a half years of living as an accused criminal. An experience that in my opinion would have broken most ordinary men. Losing friends, people he loved, family, career, and being constantly hounded by detectives who behaved as if there was no doubt that he was guilty of his crimes.

The first and only accusation came from a person who was voluntary committed in a mental asylum and had clear motive to hurt him. It was discovered in the end that here was never any evidence. All the threats, posturing and intimidation were for one purpose: to scare him.

It almost worked...on his lawyer. Thankfully he found a better one who tore apart the case and had it thrown out...two and a half years later.

There is nothing he can do. The police protect each other. The system is skewed in their favor. He has been advised to “let it go”.

A man, a friend, was tortured by the Canadian government.

(*edit* Before anyone else asks I can't go into further detail about this case for the sake of pretesting this individual and myself.)

Guantanamo Bay. Afghanistan. Global Financial Crisis. There are much greater instances of injustice in this world. There are bigger and meaner villains out there than the detectives who came after my friend.

I've built a bullet proof shelter in my mind against all the evils that come through the TeeVee; and I almost managed to suppress this evil as well. It's still only vaguely real. My brain is still trying to force it into the same storage compartment as that story of a 15 year old kid who was shot in Toronto last night. But the facts keep seeping through. Little by little I piece together a new reality because I don't have a paradigm for what happened. I can't seem to put it in a box and forget about it and I don't want to.

I'm pissed off.

There are definitely some crimes where just being accused of them make you guilty in most people's eyes.

Very interesting responses and if this didn't actually happen outside of the world I call News Media I could probably take this course of forgive and forget. As I said: my mind is trying very hard to turn this into a "news article".

I guess the biggest lesson here for me is that I've built this mental screen for the sake of living a peaceful life. The last thing I want to worry about is government agents breaking down my door because someone made a mistake. A cop arresting me and beating me because I was taking picture at the wrong time and wrong place. Or being thrown in jail, breaking down, and causing my own indefinite incarceration.

I'm not worried about getting hit by a car when I cross the road. I know it happens often but I simply have to have faith in drivers. The best I can do is take precautions. Anything more would be a phobia that effects my life in a negative way.

I have a friend who is afraid of flying and it causes him much trauma; especially since life had a cruel sense of irony and gave him a compulsive need for travel. There are better things to worry about than "what ifs." But I find "what if" much harder to suppress because it's been made very real for me.

It's not the human error that bothers me in this case. I know there are bad people out there. I can deal with villains. This is a failure of the Ontario justice system because there were many people involved that could have stopped this insanity. The system perpetuated and protected this injustice.

It's like getting hit by a car because of a crossing light malfunction. Then being told there is nothing wrong with the light because the malfunctions are so rare.

(You write like poetry.)

Crossing against the light is stupid. Most policemen are not villains. You mentioned a bullet-proof shelter? You mention human error, & taking pictures. We can't help taking pictures & making mistakes, but confusing ourselves into believing we're bullet proof is like crossing against the light. I almost ran over somebody downtown this morning who was doing so...

WHAT was your friend accused of?

Two unmarked police cars clamped as surveillance officers sat INSIDE... who then arrested the clamper for obstruction

Two police cars were clamped while royal protection officers sat inside during a visit by the Queen, police said yesterday.
The incident happened when the Queen made an unannounced visit to Portsmouth to have lunch on a luxury yacht on Wednesday.
The officers were sitting in their unmarked cars in private residents’ spaces at the Gunwharf Quays marina retail complex.

Oblivious: The Queen during her unannounced visit to Portsmouth where she had lunch with Sir Donald Gosling on his yacht the Leander
The clamper, Gareth Andrews, 37, of Fareham, Hampshire, was arrested and charged with wilfully obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty.
He was also charged with contravening the Private Security Industry Act by not displaying the appropriate licensing badge.
A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘Mr Andrews clamped two unmarked police vehicles preventing the officers, who were at Gunwharf as part of a security operation, from conducting their duties. The officers had not left the vehicles at the time they were clamped.’
It is understood that the Queen had arranged to have lunch with NCP car park boss Sir Donald Gosling on his 245ft yacht, Leander. She arrived in Southsea by helicopter and was taken in a green Range Rover to Gunwharf Quays.
Shoppers were taken by surprise when word spread that she was at the centre but a small crowd gathered to greet her.
Andrews, who works for Shoal Enforcement, will appear at South and South East Hampshire Magistrates’ Court in Portsmouth next Friday.
Mike Eames, managing director of the parking enforcement company, denied the officers were in the cars when they were clamped.
‘A member of our staff immobilised two cars parked in private residents’ bays,’ he said. ‘A plainclothes police officer produced his warrant card and requested that both vehicles be released.
‘Our member of staff confirmed he would release the vehicles if the officer would provide confirmation that he was on duty. The officer declined and arrested our member of staff.
‘At no time did the police officer identify himself as a royal protection officer or make any mention of the Queen’s visit.
‘There were no officers in the vehicles during the incident and our member of staff was correctly displaying his licence.’

Me, I hop there is surveilance tape of the coppers dunkin doughnuts or somesuch.
There is always injustice in this world, sometimes because people make mistakes, and sometimes because people can be assholes.
