We're all Africans.

Any line you draw is arbitrary. Even the 'Africa line' is arbitrary. I find myself thinking that 'Cherokee' is more of a cultural system than a race and so is something more than a condition of birth, though it seems that Wikipedia disagrees with me.

I particularly hate 'ethnic origins' forms. They want to know if I am white irish, am I a pikey, am I afro carribean etc. I just think with the anonymity of the forms, surely we should all be treated equal regardless of ethnic origin, and to ask these questions leads to discrimination - which there is in certain groups - some positive discrimination - like Irish pikeys dont have to wait to see doctors according to govt directives - they should be seen immediately and with 'extras'.
Just to take the pee (and Daniel, you may owe us money) I write that we are of Viking descent, having been followers of Sturguid the Stout, who made his way to Normandy, and we came to England as an invading force under William and shot Harold in the eye. If they insist on their wee boxes, then let them put more, they should put a box for everyone, not just some.
I also get asked on these forms about my sexual orientation - like whats that got to do with the price of fish. For that one, if I choose to write anything, I put, 'old and dusty and not applicable' or 'chaste - so none of the above'. Since when did who you rub naughty bits with define who you are as a person. What buisness is it of the state or local governments anyway..... at least untill they find a way of fixing a pedometer type thing to all headboards so they can tax us for sex - its long been said they would if they could.

You wouldn't be able to get a Certificate of Degree if Indian Blood, though...or maybe you would, but it would say 1/512.

Navajo nation requires 1/4. My wife is 1/4 Navajo and 1/4 Apache (both on her mom's side), so has a Navajo CDIB and census number (better benefits than Apache). Our daughters are 1/8th Navajo and 1/8th Apache, so rather than register as a specific tribe, they will get CDIBs with no tribal affiliation but that show 1/4 Native American, which is enough to be eligible for generic Native American scholarships and benefits from the Bureau of Indian Affairs
I was under the assumption that if you can find an ancestor on the Dawes Rolls and back it up with paperwork, you can register as a Cherokee, regardless if your parents are registered.

My grandmother (father's side) is 3/4 Cherokee & Choctaw mix. Her mother was born in Indian Territory, and my grandmother was raised in a Cherokee community (not a reservation) until her early teens. The Dust Bowl sent them packing to California.

Between my dad and mom, I reckon I'm approximately 1/4th Native American. I identify as Caucasian.

I'm a mix of English, Scottish and Irish, so i'm a full blooded Celt i think. My Scottish ancestor traces back to the Cameron Clan, which they slightly expect came from the Scandinavian - Danish region. So heavy north European.

If you put the world down to a ratio of 100 people, 66 would already be Asian. We've got a book around the house called 'The History Of White People.' But i don't see our history as a +3 good - 7 bad = -4 history type thing.

And no i strongly disagree with the idea of our differences being negative. Sure there have been negative aspects of it, but there has been positive. I talked about this before in another thread. There is this idea that we believe we should interact with each other in total disregard of race, ethnicity, gender national origin rather than benefiting from the diversity. We don't believe in turning complexity into opportunity.

But there are companies that do and are really successful because of it. I don't think approaching history in a utilitarian perspective works!
