The morning blues
I am apathetic and somewhat depressed during the morning. Anyone else like that? Is it just that I'm not a morning person? Or could it be some kind of mood disorder?
I just never feel like I've waken up fully until 4-6 hours later. Feel too sleepy (not that sleepy, just an edge of it) to do anything. Really annoying. I usually just sit around and sip tea. Sit outside and look at the trees. Or just lay on the couch. TV is even too boring to watch in this period. |

Do you sleep well and get well rested? I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination, but it only takes me 15 minutes or so to fully wake up. I'm not sure why, but the first things that come to mind are that you might have sleep apnea, a crappy bed, or something that's preventing you from getting the most restful sleep you can.

I was thinking of surgery as that's the next option, but I heard from this VA doc that they're finding out that type of surgery does more harm than good. And my grandfather had to keep having surgery every 10 years or so since he was 30ish (he lived till he was 80). So I don't know what to do. |

Hi. I will take an interest in this thread. I have always been a 'night owl all my life and have adopted an attitude half way between smugness and frustration. The best bits of both are fantastic, and I am sad not to have the choice. I have been diagnosed with constrictive sleep apnea and am therefore using a machine. It does not stop me going to sleep or staying asleep. I mention this for the purpose of 'exclusion'.
All other things being equal, I am unable to function until after about 1:00 PM. If I wake up after that time, I am fully alert within 5 minutes. This is unrelated to number of hours sleep I have had before - as long as we assume a minimum of 4 hours to combat pur exhaustion through sleeplessness. Enough of me, though obviously I'm happy to answer with further details on this matter in my own life if you've got questions. Now - you mention "mornings" - does that mean A.M. or are you referring to the time it takes you to fully wake up regradless of time of day? How are you those times you have laid in late, through vacation, illness etc - how is your waking-up then? You queried causes: 'just not a morning person?' and 'mood disorder?' "Apathetic andsomewhat depressed" during the morning. OK. Have you felt that way any other time during the day or evening? How closely are those feelings related to time? |

I'm on a CPAP machine too, and it took me over a year of trying to actually be able to sleep consistently with it. Try putting the mask on for about an hour, when you first get to bed, and do that for a while and you might find yourself actually falling asleep with it on. I would give it an hour at a time, and if I wasn't asleep I would just take it off and try falling asleep normally.
I also couldn't use the mask, I never got used to it. I use the nose pillows, which leave more of your face free from entanglement. I'm kind of claustrophobic and had trouble covering up my whole face...

I know this may sound elementary, but I didn't sleep good for a few years after I had purchased a cheap bed. After I met my fiance, she started experiencing the same thing as you mentioned above! We slept at her place and it was immediately better for both of us!
