Way back when...

Post something from way back when...something was cool in your day.

reebok pumps were the in thing when i was a kid. all my favourite players wore them and i envied their skills because of course reebok pumps made them do what they do.

...I thought the age difference between us was greater than it apparently is.

I never got into them, but POGs were pretty popular when I was in junior high.

Some of my friends and I would casually play Magic: The Gathering as well.

I remember clackers. I had a solid red coloured set. Extremely annoying for those who were using them. As dangerous as a pair of nun-chucks.

I found a clip of them in use:

and I can't find a picture of these flip-flops on the internet...we called them deckies, I think. but everyone wore these in New Smyrna.
I was also particularly enamored of this type of sundress at the time.
this is me circa 1977 or so.

Okay, here's something that was all the gear when I was in high school: everybody had an Adidas sport bag. Carried everything from your lunch & books to your running shoes or bathing suit.

Nobody had backpacks. if you didn't have an Adidas bag, you pretty well carried your stuff loose.

Fond memories of the hot plastic smell.

My microscope was the coolest thing. My 9 year old self danced with joy when I opened that gift.

I loved my Earth-shoes. They were dark brown & reminded me of polished buckeyes.
I spent a lot of time gazing down at them during math class.

And the Planet of the Apes Treehouse! I loved this thing.

And of course... Star Trek (I didn't own this but my best friend did). The teleporter was the coolest.

I still remember that the school supply lists we had expressly said "NO TRAPPER KEEPERS". I had one anyway, for keeping my stuff at home together.

I loved (and still do love) anything with Hello Kitty on it. I had pencils, pencil case, stickers, erasers, and now I have pencils, and a SIGG water bottle with her on it:

Well, in the early years of elementary school, a Peechee sufficed for carrying school work to and from school.

A Trapper Keeper took up too much room in the primary school desk, made noise when it was opened, and in later elementary school, proved to be too small for the amount of loose-leaf notebook paper teachers wanted us to have on hand.

I wore these in the early 80's and then again in the late 90's, They came back.

I believe Jr High was when it was cool to tight roll your jeans

It was cool to wear your Eastland shoes with your tight rolled jeans.

I also had a period where I got a "Rachel" Hair Cut, but never styled it right:

I was totally Angela from My So Called Life, She (and I) dressed like this at first:

Then started dressing like this:

I even had that exact same plaid, flannel dress. I wanted to dye my hair the same color, but my mom wouldn't let me.

And I wasn't allowed to wear jelly shoes after I tripped and fell one too many times. Mom got tired of bandaging me up, so the jelly shoes went into the garbage.

Tempest was the ONLY game I played at arcades. Many many quarters were lost to that particular addiction. I would skip lectures to head downtown to the "The Wizard" arcade hoping that there was nobody on the game. Most likely there wasn't because it was just too frustrating for most people.

I've tried to play emulated versions on the PC, but it isn't the same as having the upright unit that you can stand i front and spin the big metal knob, and slam the red button.

I had a girlfriend who was awesome at Tempest. She would stand there for hours, crowds would gather around to watch her. Those piercing, screechy, crunchy sounds are embedded in my memory forever. She was good at all video games. She particularly loved Tempest, though.
