Found a HUGE typo!!! Need advice on buying a $150.00 item marked as $0.00

Hey there...I can't tell you the place I am getting this item at cause ppl will get it before I do...I found a WAO Cranium robot that retails at $150...at least the price ranges around that...I found a website that has marked it as $0.00...I was wondering...is a typo on an internet store the same as a typo in a real-world store???

In a real world store if you see an item advertised at a lower price than intended then legally you can buy it at that lower price or else you could acuse them of false advertising or something like that...but what about internet stores??? Should I get a bunch of these??? (Thinking about eBay) Should I just buy 1 or 2 or maybe 4 (I have 4 in the cart so far...How many do you think they'll be willing to cough up at the free price???

This is not a scam website...these ppl have phone # and address and they've been around since 1942

I am getting $9.65 worth of stuff from them...what do you think I should do??? Legally could I get a whole bunch and make them gimme them for free or are they protected somehow from their own mistakes??? THANX
C'YA ?:-D

In general, it's a good idea to know what "something like that" really is before you make any grand scheme to rip off a store and perhaps make an ass out of yourself. Intuitively I would say that this isn't so since a typo is far different than knowingly making false claims. "Acuse" has no legal impact on its own.

However, I possess no legal expertise.

None. I bet they will instead correct the price and apologize for "any inconvenience this may have caused".

Personally, from the opinions and input on legal, medical, and other "expert" subjects from people on this forum, I wouldn't trust any of it unless the person has some kind of special interest or knowledge and can back it up.

If you wanted to scam them, I would try to buy one with some other shit and try to pass it off. Then maybe you'd have an easier time getting your money back if they decided that they're not going to let you have it for free.

But my final suggestion would be to point it out and not rip them off at all.

I seem to remember a similar case a few months back, where an online retailer was forced to cough up a bunch of cheap computers.
However, I am also aware that if a real store makes such a typo, they are only obliged to sell you one item at the incorrect price.

So...are you willing to take it to court to get one robot?

Isn't there usually a disclaimer saying that information might not be totally accurate [and they can change it at any time without prior notice] and that it doesn't give you any rights?

you might want to keep in mind the fact that there is no such thing as a free lunch, or...what goes around, comes around...

Too true uncle phil!

MacGnG 07-12-2003 12:42 PM

yea like others said there is probly a disclamer saying any typos are not the responsibility of the store and either way they make u pay the real price online anyway at the checkout

Lebell 07-12-2003 01:38 PM

Unlikely you can force the issue, as most people are savy to this and put disclaimers.

I also remember the computer case and as I recall they didn't have to sell the systems cheap because the deal is made at the time of shipping, not when you place your order.

Eviltree 07-17-2003 03:47 PM

Well, if you want one, get it. Don't make a fuss about it though, just try your luck! if you loose, o well, if you win you get 1 free robot

frozenstellar 07-19-2003 08:01 AM

not likely you'll get it for free. i thought the same a while ago when a pc store fucked up its pricing on a product ($0.00).

needless to say, they refused to ship at that price, and got off on a disclaimer they had on their site.

If it's a free robot, it's probably an evil robot.

had an experience like this when amazon had a bug in their system.

You could buy a board game, get another for free.
With that one you got for free, you could ... get another one free
... and so on
and then you could remove the origional game.

My friend received so many games that the dean of housing (at the college) had to talk to him because it took 4 golf carts to truck the stuff into the post office. He then returned them, minus receipt to toys r us (who sold them through amazon to him) and bought a playstation, some games, and a farkload of other stuff.

So yes, they have to honor it, but amazon fixed their bug within 4 hours of them placing their order.... :D

well if you were looking at it then you were probably ready to shell out $150 for it anyway, so if you want it, go for it. The fact that you MIGHT get it for $0 would be a very big bonus.

Wombat 07-24-2003 03:16 AM

You won't get it for free.

Basically, unless they put the price up incorrectly with the purposeful intent to mislead customers, they should be protected against this.

A price of $0 is pretty obviously a genuine error and not done with the intent to trick people.

Casdin 07-24-2003 05:04 AM

A friend of mine tried this off of another web site that had incorrectly marked palm pilots at $0.

They just say sorry for the typo, and ask if you want to buy one at the regular price.

geodaro 07-24-2003 06:51 AM

I think you should devote as much time to being an honest and respectable person as you do to taking advantage of other peoples mistakes. You may find that you get more out of life than before! As Uncle Phil said - "What goes around comes around"! Just my opinion though!

Jakejake 07-26-2003 05:56 PM

Yep, happened on Amazon, they had marked some Pocket PCs at $6 instead of $600 or something. Just emailed everyone who ordered one and apologised for the mistake.

tmricha 07-28-2003 01:19 PM

typo...sometimes the the processing system behind a database of products throws a quirk and you will get $0.00 item...but rest assured, they will bill you for it or at least send you a notice saying there was a mistake.
