Hats

Being one that hates my hair, as it often seems beyond reasoning with. (for the record i'm one of the unfortunate hair types akin to napoleon dynamite, if I actually let it grow out)

I'm a big fan of hats. I have many different hats. :p

Where do you shop for hats? Whats your preferred style?

Personally I hate "trucker hats" with the plastic mesh. I like the full caps that don't have the little adjustment strap, with the half circle shaped hole above it.
Beanie lids, or stuff of that nature work too.

The men's hat died with JFK. Baseball cap, winter hat, or nothing these days.

I'll wear a ball cap when I have to leave the house and I don't have time to wash my hair beforehand. Other than that, don't touch my hair.

One size fits all. Helps break the ice when being pulled over.

+1 unless you're Jove.

KellyC 11-30-2009 03:33 PM

I don't look good in hats so I don't wear it. The gf did convince me to buy one though. It's a military style hat. I prefer it over baseball caps. I've only worn it a few times in the 1+ year I had it. I also have a few beanies. Again, the only time I wear those is when I go snowboarding and need something to protect my head and ears from the cold.

Then again, I have nice hair. :D

The ultimate in hats... the Tilley Hat... guaranteed for life (used to be forever :p )

I stopped wearing hats when I was in 10th grade and realized that I actually cared whether I have helmet hair or not. Since it's impossible not to mess up your hair when you're wearing a hat and since I always make sure it looks good when I walk out the door, hat became a no-no. Exceptions being trips where I wouldn't have to take my hat off in public (quick trips to 7-11 or Wal*Mart and whatnot).

genuinegirly 11-30-2009 05:01 PM

People give me hats. I suppose I have been guilty of purchasing a couple. One was a black wool hat from a street vendor near the Centre Pompidou in Paris. I have a fond memory of picking out a hat from the Mad Hatter store in Disneyland when I was quite young - a bright pink sailor's hat. My name was embroidered in bright yellow thread. I'm sure my mother has the hat stored away in some box somewhere.
I do have quite a few hats. I enjoy wearing them. I, too, use them to cover up bad hair days. The other week I threw my hair into a loose bun, then put on a knit cap. It looked something like this:

I only wear hats when I need protection from sun/cold/stuff flying at my head. Otherwise, they're just too much trouble to bother with.

You forgot to mention that it also doubles as vagina repellent.

Punk.of.Ages 11-30-2009 07:40 PM

Unless I feel like putting my mohawk up I always wear hats.

Usually even then I have a bandana on...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...omma/drunk.jpg

If my hair's not up I'll wear the bandana this way...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...SCN0147tfp.jpg

If it's not a bandana it's either a scally cap...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...a/DSCI0036.jpg

...or a beanie in colder weather...

Au contraire, mon ami. Despite that fact that all post-pubescent women are beautiful in their own way, and that that beauty just goes on and on and on, it is not until women accumulate experience and maturity that their inherent desireability truly begins to emerge. By, say thirty, a woman is moving beyond the window-dressing hot attractiveness of her youth to the overwhelming sexiness of the beautiful, mature, confident woman who knows herself and her desires, and is not afraid to go after what she wants.

And it is these goddesses that appreciate the suave, confident air of self-assuredness and devil-may-care adventure that these hats suggest. Trust me on this, it's true.

These hats actually come with a small concealable pamphlet of detachable "brag-tags" with the company information on them, to be given by the wearer to guys who ask about the hat upon seeing the looks afforded the wearer by women. The brag-tags also suggest the recipient is obligated to buy the wearer a drink. That that obligation many not only be foregone, however, but actually reversed when giving the tag to an inquiring female ;) .

My head doesn't comply with hats very much better, either. If anything thing at all, I'll wear genuine alpine ski-caps (which are called something else altogether, but for comprehension/connection's sake, I'll refer to them as they're known in North American), obut only when it's extremely wind-whipping.

When I'm older and able to trade in my polaroid glasses for some more mature horned-rimmed ones, I'm going shopping for a Tom Landry hat (even though I have no love for the Cowboys, just the opposite, I still respect the man).

Martian 12-01-2009 10:32 AM

Tom Landry's hat is a fedora. Pinched at the front, with the brim rolled down.

I can get behind a hat like that.

I don't do anything so vulgar as purchasing my hats. Their acquisition involves a week long trek, and the fires of mount Doom.

Okay, the real answer is that I got the infamous fedora at a mall kiosk. My secrets are now laid bare.

Maybe where you live.

I wear beanies a lot. Beanie = hair compression device. The poof needs it.

Baraka_Guru 12-01-2009 10:55 AM

I usually wear a hat for utility. Otherwise, I don't like wearing things on my head.

For sun and rain, I wear a Tilley hat. It was a godsend when I was in Cuba for both purposes.

For the long winters, I have a toque. Of course.

The only way I'd wear a hat for fashion's sake is perhaps a fedora along with a suit. But only then, it would require me being outside for a certain length of time. I guess that would be both fashion and utility. I perhaps would require an overcoat as well.

Poppinjay 12-01-2009 11:56 AM

I wear a green denim ball cap with no logo or writing on it. It is worn in the front with a layer of cloth breaking through the bill. I have about ten caps, but that's my go to.

absorbentishe 12-01-2009 12:00 PM

Recently I've become a fan of the newsboy style hat. I have 2, but looking for more! Also, since it gets cold here, I wear a beanie to keep warm.

Yes, the poof needs taming. I always have a hat on. Baseball cap for the summer months, and a regular winter hat for the winter months.

I love the look of a Fedora on a guy. Other than that, I don't really care for hats.

As I'm fairly confident that I'll never have to settle for women of such an advanced age, I'll have to take your word for it.

Wearer of beanies ≠ arbiter of fashion.

MSD, will do.

Didn't say I wore them outside the house, did I?

"Fashion" doesn't exist here. The weather here dictates that we wear practical clothing. Thus, Tilley hats are sexy!

MSD and Plan9: where were you guys when I was in junior high school and horribly teased for the poof? I really could have used you then. I could care less now.

I was being teased for everything from my hair to my height to my weight to my clothes, and everything else, and being beaten up while teachers did pretty much nothing to stop it.

filtherton 12-06-2009 09:29 AM

I used to think fedoras were a good idea, but then I saw Adam Savage rocking one, and I reconsidered. I'm orange and pale, just like Savage, and orange and pale doesn't go well with fedora.

I do have a light weight wool cycling cap that looks good on me.

Ever since the daily average dropped below 20, it's all balaclavas and skull caps.

Bacchanal 12-06-2009 12:11 PM

Black KU baseball cap, sometimes a blue one, but that's generally it.

It's hard to imagine a world without hats. I've been a casual collector for most of my life, for nothing more than to remind me of where I've been -not always having the capacity to recall days at a time- hat's are a handy and often confusing article. I still can't remember where the Sombrero with the donte-donte balls came from, but it and it's blood stain remind me of TJ in my teens so I'll stick with that for now.

As to wearing hat's, some just can't pull it off. -It's like frosting Tequila. Two exceptional things; frosting, mmmmmmmmmmm good and Tequila arrrriiiiiba! But bring the two together and it's just not right.- Whereas others can make any hat look good, case in point, GenuineGirly in the pic up string. Nice job Girly. Most of us fall in the middle, some hat's work for us, some don't. Aside from the utility a hat can be a grand gesture, a big middle finger to the world shouting 'I WILL NOT CONFORM TO YOUR COSMETICALLY PERFECT, PRODUCT ENHANCED, HAIR HELMET IDEAL OF WHAT I SHOULD LOOK LIKE!' or as simple as a cover-up for a good idea gone bad. None the less, the world would be far less colorful without a diverse selection of head gear.

Case in point:

I only wear hats to make some kind of statement or to wear as a costume. I have a pretty black fur Russian hat with a Soviet Russia hat pin on the front and I have several sombreros and I have a couple Mickey Mouse ears from Disneyland and --though these aren't really hats they still make a big statement-- loads of headbands with big flowers and feathers and crazy things on them.

I only wear a hat when I feel like having some fun. :)

Reese 12-08-2009 02:05 AM

I like to go with the propeller beanie cap. It attracts the ladies. Also pretty much guarantees nobody takes my subtle sarcastic remarks seriously.

Nah, I usually go with a baseball cap. It depends on the day. I own a lot of caps but I usually wear the same ones.
I have a black Harley hat. I have a black pinstripe Foxhead hat. I have a red one too but it's too flashy. I have an Atlanta Braves hat because I'm a fair weather fan. I have a lot of trucker hats that I've gotten locally from people runnin for office. It's fun to sport them years after the person left office or didn't get the nomination. :) "Brown for Jailer? Who's that?" I have a brown distressed leather hat which I love but it's hot as hell. I also have a bright red "I love Jesus" hat I like to wear together with my Iron Maiden and Slayer T-shirts. Unfortunately I'm the only one in on my little joke.. Yeah, That's it I think. I really want a fedora but I have a fat head and they just don't look right. Also thinkin about getting a military style cap, not sure what's they're called..
