I'm the wife, and I'm the default driver (unless I'm really tired, and/or he just feels like driving--but that's pretty rare). I love driving, always have and always will, and I am quite confident in my driving abilities. Without question, if we need to get somewhere fast and efficiently, it's my job to get us there in a hurry.
Actually, I often get nauseous when I have to be a passenger in any moving vehicle. The nausea ceases within minutes if I'm able to switch over to the driver's seat. So yeah, who knows if it's psychosomatic or what, but I *need* to be the primary driver. Luckily, my husband doesn't really like driving (nor does he like it when I turn into a driving instructor, if he's driving), so we don't have much conflict about this. I also tend to take care of car repairs and such... just something I'm more inclined towards doing, has nothing to do with gender roles in my opinion. Ktsp is really good with the maps and GPS, so if we get lost, he's the one who can navigate us there with me at the steering wheel. (I also HATE stopping to ask for directions--he's always the one who pushes me to do that, since I'm very stubborn about it and I don't like doing it.)
