Broken Nose
Hi
So I broke my nose over two weeks ago and it still hurts. Is that normal? Or should I maybe think of going to a doctor to ask them to have a look at it? It isnt like agony but it still aches sometimes and its very tender to touch.

If you think you 'might' have to go to a doctor for any reason, then you have to go to a doctor. It doesn't make you a hypochondriac. It means your not stupid. There are certain part of the body you don't want to develop any complications at all if you can help it.
Go see your GP. |

I'm in a sport where broken bones happen a lot, and no, you don't need to go to a doc for every broken thing. It's a good idea if you can afford it, of course, but most of us can't. I'd say it depends on how much pain, and if its crooked and needs to be set properly. Otherwise, yeah its normal, broken bones take a long time to mend. Expect a month of tenderness, and try not to reinjure.

I would definitely see a doc to at least find out if anything SHOULD be done. Then you can listen to everyone else tell you not to go. :P
After more than 2 weeks of pain and tenderness, I really do feel you should go.

why not go to the doctor... UK healthcare is free isn't it? Why ask a bunch of yanks that pay for their healthcare when you could get the best opinion from a doctor.

Ive never broken my nose before - so I dont know if it should have healed by now or not, which is why I was asking the question. Just because health care is free doesnt mean like I am going to go along and clog up the system for the people who do need it if I dont.

If it isn't set properly, they might have to rebreak it to fix it. And I think the way it is now could lead to an infection--maybe even in your sinuses. (Both situations happened to my brother.)
When sinus infections go septic, that's bad news. This is a good reason to go to the doctor.

My SO and I were horsing around and I got cracked in the nose with a knee. It was fractured and not completely broken but I was sore maybe three weeks. Towards the last week it was just an annoying tenderness when I bumped it, not pain. If you're having pain still, I'd head out. My coworker had to have hers rebroken and they had to laser out scar tissue. Best not to wait.

That being said, it's a doctor's JOB to deal with things like this. It isn't wasting time for them it is what they dedicated their lives to do. |

No, its not bleeding, and I can breathe but I do keep getting a blocked up nose. I broke it right at the top, and the doctor set it at the time, but they didnt really do much else. He just used his hand and pushed it straight-ish and said "well youve broken eyour nose too" while he was glueing the cut shut.

The pain/tenderness is to be expected as it can take 4-6 weeks for it to heal fully. If it continues to concern you, go have it checked. |
