Volunteer Work
I've been working in downtown Detroit for a few years now. Before I got this gig I had worked with a independent computer contractor. We did quite a few methadone clinics around the metro area. At the time, I was just out of high school from a well off area. So, walking into these places was a bit terrifying for a privileged white boy. However, the experience I had was a bit different. I was there to get the State regulated pumps working, and after a few visits, everybody else realized this too. Since these things were always fucked up, I became some what of a hero in this place. It gave me the opportunity to realize that these were people like any other, but dealt a shitty hand and some bad choices...
I'm still downtown, I still, somehow have a job, and would like to help, whether it be volunteer work or my ability to teach computer skills. Does anyone have an experience to share or has done some volunteer teaching? I'm really looking at something in Detroit. Thanks, Narmy |

If you're looking to work with youth, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America might be a good place to start: Volunteering - Volunteer work and volunteer programs with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Churches often do a lot of volunteer work as part of their ministry, so if you're at all interested in joining a faith community, that might be something to pursue. Additionally, there are community service groups out there like the Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis. A lot of these groups have aging member populations, and are eager for new, younger blood. These groups have particular projects that they do on both a local and global scale, so if you're looking to do community service that helps at home and abroad, they are a good choice.

add to the community service list The Moose! I served thanksgiving dinner to the homeless (not really having anywhere to go myself) and the Moose were the only ones who wanted the help. After being there awhile, I got to talking with various mooses (sic), and they really do a lot for the community, both local and some nation wide projects as well.
Go Moose!
