Raised Eyebrows?
I know this is random, but I am not sure where else to put it. I can only raise my right eyebrow independently, or both at the same time. Why can't I raise the left one by itself?

the muscles that control eyebrows are neruologically linked to the same muscles that control hands, so if you are right handed, you can only do the right eyebrow, etc. People in the middle ages were persecuted if they could raise thier left eyebrow, as it was thought only the devil had the power over his own left eyebrow.
Just kidding, I have no idea. Sorry. |

It seems to me that it might be one of those genetic traits, like rolling your tongue. I'm a rightie but can only raise my left. Go figure.

I can only raise my left (left-handed) but I can sneer with either side of my upper lip.

I'm right handed and can only raise my left or both simultaneously with any ease. Go figure. I can also wiggle my ears separately and independently. I can also do a Vulcan salute easily with my left hand, and struggle mightily with my right.

i have wanted to be able to raise just one my whole life. but, alas... no one in the family can but i can do tongue tricks and have voluntary nystagmus, so i guess i'm still fun.

Likewise, I can only raise them in unison....then again, I tend to knit mine more than raise them, so I don't lose a lot.

+1 for right only. That's after spending the last 5 minutes squinting and trying to raise the left one.
Make that 8 minutes. Damnit.

I can do all of that, but are you wiggling the ears independently? I have to raise the brows simultaneously as I wiggle 'em.

I'm left-handed, but I cannot raise my left eyebrow independently; I can only raise my right eyebrow independently.
I do everything left-handed... execept, I shoot a rifle right-handed. (I shoot a pistol with my left hand.) I don't know why. Maybe it has something to do with my right eye being stronger than my left? |

I'm right handed and can only lift my left eyebrow independently.
My left hand is better at the Vulcan "Live Long And Prosper" sign. My right ear responds better to wiggling, although I'm really just flexing the muscles on the back right side of my head. My wife used to tease me because though I could roll my tung, I couldn't make it point like she can. With a few minutes practice in the mirror I was able to do it, though it's an effort. The human body is fun!

I'm naturally left-handed and tend to prefer it in most instances, but the right hand is dominant with certain activities. I wouldn't classify myself as ambidextrous, since the ability is still limited. Last edited by Cernunnos; 11-11-2008 at 03:16 PM.. |

I believe it has to do with practice. For example, when I was a teenager I became obsessed for a few days with bending only the tips of my fingers, at the first joint. I would actually practice by holding the fingers still with the other hand and bending only the tips. I can do it with my right hand because I practiced with it(Lefty). I also taught myself to cross one eye and keep the other straight. It was simply crossing the eyes and then looking left or right. One eye stays crossed if you do that. It was then finding the midpoint so that one eye was halfway in between leaving it straight. I can do that with both eyes. I can also bounce my pecs independently.

I find a single raised eyebrow to be sexy. When my friend does it, I melt.
Alas, I can't do it and seeing the responses here, I'm wondering if it's a guy thang.

In every sample size I've seen (from a bio class to a forum with tens of thousands of active users,) the majority can only do one alone, not the other, and the people who can do either gloat at them. Those who can only do one tend to be able to raise the right and not the left more frequently, and the few who can't do either alone get indignant when the whole group is raising eyebrows at each other and asking, "Do you smell what The Rock is cooking?"
