What risks are associated with kissing?
I am admittedly someone that is very healthy and concerned about my well being, and that made me wonder about what long term health risks there are from kissing someone? For the sake of this post, let's assume it's open mouth with a partner, perhaps some tongue action.
Aside from passing a cold/flu or other, more temporary, illness on to a partner, what is the risk of getting a longer term malady from a partner, and how likely is it? As an example, I gather Hepatitis B can be passed on through the transmission of saliva. I'd be interested in learning more about that, as well as other maladies that aren't sexually transmitted, but perhaps worthy of concern when kissing another.

Mono!!! It's the ORIGINAL kissing disease; otherwise known as infectious mononucleosis, I managed to pass it on to my SO after a few weeks of dating. Evidently, I had mono sometime during my childhood and didn't realize it; people who have had mono continue to shed active Epstein-Barr virus (the cause of infectious mononucleosis) periodically throughout their lifetimes.
Hopefully you've had mono already.

Also, a much lower chance than the above, but any blood born disease can be passed if you both have small cuts in your mouth. So there's 100s of major diseases that way...but really you probably risk worse in touching a handrail at the airport.
There are no actions without lasting consequence. But you gotta live your life, so don't let it worry you too much. And when thinking of risks vs reward, think of the rewards as the experience of love as a whole rather than just the pleasure of kissing one individual. Onesowl- you don't even have to kiss to get mono. You can also get it by someone coughing or sneezing.
a lot of these risks are not too much to worry about though. You shouldn't be scared of kissing just because you don't want to get something. Just be careful and try to pick up any signs from the other person of having any of these diseases/infections. None of them are extreme, though it may seem like it.

This was my very first thought. Actually there are some pretty bad viruses floating around now beyond the flu... ORSA, RSV, etc, if you're immune system is getting knocked around by stuff. My boyfriend tried to give me one of his lip eruptions, but we're really careful because I haven't ever had one like he gets.

dlish, that's a very unfortunate story you posted. Who would have known? Seems like some very bad luck for that couple.
I understand the concern with kissing, but...that will never stop me from continuing to do it lol. I love kissing. I've never had any problems and I've been kissing for 28 years.

Based on StelaLuna's thread, one risk of kissing is Croup!
But only if you kiss ratbastid. I for one will only kiss women from now on just to be safe.
