What risks are associated with kissing?

I am admittedly someone that is very healthy and concerned about my well being, and that made me wonder about what long term health risks there are from kissing someone? For the sake of this post, let's assume it's open mouth with a partner, perhaps some tongue action.

Aside from passing a cold/flu or other, more temporary, illness on to a partner, what is the risk of getting a longer term malady from a partner, and how likely is it?

As an example, I gather Hepatitis B can be passed on through the transmission of saliva. I'd be interested in learning more about that, as well as other maladies that aren't sexually transmitted, but perhaps worthy of concern when kissing another.

Mono!!! It's the ORIGINAL kissing disease; otherwise known as infectious mononucleosis, I managed to pass it on to my SO after a few weeks of dating. Evidently, I had mono sometime during my childhood and didn't realize it; people who have had mono continue to shed active Epstein-Barr virus (the cause of infectious mononucleosis) periodically throughout their lifetimes.

Hopefully you've had mono already.

Also, a much lower chance than the above, but any blood born disease can be passed if you both have small cuts in your mouth. So there's 100s of major diseases that way...but really you probably risk worse in touching a handrail at the airport.

There are no actions without lasting consequence. But you gotta live your life, so don't let it worry you too much. And when thinking of risks vs reward, think of the rewards as the experience of love as a whole rather than just the pleasure of kissing one individual.

Onesowl- you don't even have to kiss to get mono. You can also get it by someone coughing or sneezing.

a lot of these risks are not too much to worry about though. You shouldn't be scared of kissing just because you don't want to get something. Just be careful and try to pick up any signs from the other person of having any of these diseases/infections. None of them are extreme, though it may seem like it.

Baby died after contracting the herpes virus

Baby died from cold sore virus
Mum says she may have passed it on
Neither were protected by antibodies
A BRITISH mother is devastated after her newborn daughter died from the herpes virus, possibly passed on with a kiss when she had a cold sore.

Charlotte Raveney, 32, and her husband Mohamed, 28 lost their baby Mira to the herpes simplex virus-1, the same virus that causes the common cold sore, at just 10 days old

Mira's birth, at a healthy 8lb last November, coincided with Ms Raveney getting her first ever cold sore, Ms Raveney told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.

She had never had one and asked her midwife if it was dangerous but was reassured it was nothing to worry about.

"The midwife said it had probably happened because I was run down after the birth and wasn't getting much sleep," Ms Raveney told the paper.

She was discharged from hospital four days after giving birth and went home with Mira to Tonbridge in Kent.

But four days later, Mira became ill. Ms Raveney and her husband rushed her to hospital but doctors could not save her.

Five weeks later they learned that Mira had the herpes virus and no antibodies to protect her.

"'As it was my first ever cold sore, her tiny body was unprotected," Ms Raveney said.

"If I'd had a cold sore before, I would have developed some sort of immunity to the virus and this would have been passed to Mira through the placenta," she said.

'It was just incredibly bad luck that my first ever infection coincided with the birth, and I unknowingly transmitted the virus to her in the first few days of her life."

There was no way to tell whether the virus was definitely passed on by her.

Up to 85 per cent of the British population carry the virus and it could have been passed on by her husband or someone else in the hospital who was carrying the virus.

Ms Raveney said Mira's life could have been saved if doctors had known what they were treating.

But she said most of them weren't aware of the danger of this virus to newborn babies.

"We've been amazed at how little is known about this, even by some of the top medical experts we've contacted since losing Mira," she said.

"Apparently, babies are most at risk from this virus during the first six weeks of their life because of their poor immunity. If doctors had known that this was my first ever cold sore, Mira could have been given anti-viral drugs to ensure that the damage was caught and the virus didn't spread.".

When I got Mono, I caught it off a coke can improvised into a marijuana pipe.....

I still say the biggest risk of kissing is the potential to fall in love.

Actually there are some pretty bad viruses floating around now beyond the flu... ORSA, RSV, etc, if you're immune system is getting knocked around by stuff.
My boyfriend tried to give me one of his lip eruptions, but we're really careful because I haven't ever had one like he gets.

dlish, that's a very unfortunate story you posted. Who would have known? Seems like some very bad luck for that couple.

I understand the concern with kissing, but...that will never stop me from continuing to do it lol. I love kissing. I've never had any problems and I've been kissing for 28 years.

Based on StelaLuna's thread, one risk of kissing is Croup!

But only if you kiss ratbastid.

I for one will only kiss women from now on just to be safe.
