New airport security machines that see through clothes

'Virtual strip search' sparks privacy fears - CNN.com

So does this take things a little too far? I mean you can tell that the gender of the person by looking at their small thumbnail image. I could imagine what the real image would look like.

Would you be ok with this machine? Would it beat getting a normal strip search if they suspect you have something? Is making the security line go faster the only thing that matters to you?

I know if I got hired as a TSA inspector, the girls cheerleading team would scream terrorist group to me.

ASU, if the kind of images turn you on, then by all means don't apply as a TSA inspector. However, I can't see anything erotic about that thumbnail.

Everybody seems to think they're so special and their body hides something unique.

You may be surprised, but I can tell the gender of a person even without looking through their clothes with a 99%+ accuracy?

Sit in front of a screen like that for 1 hour, and I think you'll be alot less enthousiastic about it.

If it makes the line goe faster, sure. And if it replaces normal stripsearch, fine again.

That photo doesn't do anything for me. If this helps safety let's go. The hold liquids thing is a joke I can tell you that. In fact, a lot is a silly waste of time to help us feel safe. This appears to be something substantial. And please. let's get those lines moving!!!!

I've flown through Schipol a couple of times since they started testing them but have yet to have been selected to go through. They seem to always choose hot women.

This seems a bit intrusive to me. I wouldn't be happy to be scanned unless they had a really good explanation for it.

I really don't like the TSA and measures like these aren't helping. Yes it's invasive and unnecessary. But I suppose that so long as the passengers are scanned by members of their own sex and these images aren't cached or cataloged - there really isn't that much to complain about.

I'd just really hate to see these scanners replacing the metal detectors and every single passenger being subjected to a virtual strip search just to board a flight.

How intrusive this is I guess would depend on the individual. Personally, if it got me through the line quicker without having to take my shoes off and emptying everything out of my pockets, then fire up the machine. As far as security measures go, this machine makes way more sense than the stupid shit one has to go through now to board a flight.

The only thing I know of that can see through clothing like that is an XRAY. Privacy concerns aside, I don't want to be bombarded by mutagenic xrays in order to board a plane. There's a reason they make you wear a lead suit when you're getting something xray'd.. they want to make sure you're only exposed briefly and only in the one place it is absolutely essential to do so.

This is millimeter wave radar, which is non-ionizing radiation. It's safe.

Honestly that pic almost looks like it's a skeletal image. You can't make out the 'areas' of the body. So I don't see that as intrusion. And it's only supposed to be used on those with probable cause.

It seems like it is a guy to me. And that is from the reduced quality image.

But maybe it's just that I have gone through airport security so many times and would worry about these machines getting installed in other places as well.

Couldn't an airline have all their passengers sign off on being scanned in this method before flying, and offer them the guarantee of increased security as a result?

Passengers that weren't interested could fly on another airline. Those that were could be scanned and fly with the airline using the machines.

Seriously, why are people so much in uproar about this? It's not like they're using Q X-Ray glasses* to see everything clearly. They would get a distorted vision of your boobs and/or penis.

There was talk of testing these in Phoenix quite a while ago and I remember the discussion from then. If I remember correctly the idea is that the person viewing these images isn't even right next to the machine but rather in a secluded room where he or she is the only one to see them and he or she won't have contact with the people being screened.

Personally I don't have a problem with this because it seems like a pretty benign way of keeping planes safe. So what if some random person in a room 100 yards away sees a skewed picture of what my body looks like?

If it made my penis look larger, I would go through that thing all the time, maybe carry around a photo of me in it.

The original pic looked like an x-ray, that pic Zooksport posted looked a bit more "intrusive" but still, big damn deal.

Seems like for once we have something that actually might make flying marginally safer rather than just looking like they're doing something (liquid ban? don't get me started.) I'm for it.

I went through that machine earlier this year when flying in Europe. It did not speed things up, it slowed things down. It wasn't like walking through a metal detector. I felt very uncomfortable, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make for safer air travel.

I am all for this equipment installed and used, but they would need to do something to speed things up.

Meh, I could care less as long as it's safe, the images don't seem any worse then what you'd see at most pools anymore. I figure 15 month from now they'll be a shit load class action lawsuits for mesolookinknotsonormal or some other unheard of cancer.

I wonder if this machine will mean a painless, quick experience at the security checkpoints. It seems like they could get by with less staff. It would also mean the end of random searches. All of these are plusses. I hope the additional expense of new machines will mean more money for airlines (fewer delays, happier customers) - times are tough for them right now.

I don't really see why there's so much fuss about these machines. The first pic I don't think anyone could have a problem with. The second one is more revealing but it's no different to wearing a swimsuit.
