Which side of the bed is yours?
I've had a few live-in relationships and have always slept on the left side of the bed (facing the bed) and never had a guy object or argue with my choice, until there was one that said that the left side had to be his and had been used to that way with his ex-wife of many years.
I did get him to change his mind but it did set me to wondering how many have a preference, if it's based on gender, power, comfort, where the bathroom or window is located. Or is it merely left or right-handedness for spooning and tantalizing throughout the night? Thoughts?

It varies. I've never been in a live-in relationship, but if somebody sleeps over, I sleep on the left side of the bed. We went on a week long trip and I slept on the right. *shrug*
However, I always walk on the left side. Walking to the right of my walking partner is uncomfortable.

Crompsin and I have switched back and forth a few times. In Columbus (alone) I slept on the right side of the bed because that was where the alarm clock/lamp were. When Crompsin first started sleeping over, I did the same. When Buddha moved in, we switched because the little furry bastard likes to crawl all over whoever's on the right side (closest to the door) and because he'd bang on the door handle and wake me up (I'm the lighter sleeper of the two of us). Now, we have switched back because the right side of the bed is cooler at night (the air conditioner is closest to the left side of the bed, but the cold air kind of "passes over" that person) and Crompsin would get cold in the middle of the night, turn the AC off, and then I'd be burning up. Switching helped fix that.
I usually prefer to have him between me and the door, but the room temperature dynamics don't really allow that at the moment. I think he prefers to be by the window, anyway, so it's alright. We make it work.

We switch off every night.
Both of us grew up in households where mom & dad each had their own side of the bed. Neither of us liked that concept. The bed is ours, every square inch.

Verry interesting concept. Funny, when we're not sleeping in same bed, doesn't matter which part of it we're on. I'm sure we've all fallen asleep somewhere else on that bed, too. I like the way you two think.

I prefer to be on whichever side is in the corner... I guess, furthest away from the door. I just feel cozier that way, I guess. In his old apartment, that meant I was on the right... but in Iceland, it means I have been on the left the whole time.
However, when we go camping, our sleeping bags will only zip together in one combination, which always puts me on the right. So we adjust to whatever.

I always sleep on the right (facing the bed). A month or so ago our air conditioner went out so we put in a window unit in the bedroom; the widow's on my side. I couldn't handle the air blowing on me so we switched. It was really weird. I don't know if I was more excited when the air conditioner was fixed because the whole house was cooler or because we could get back to our regular sleeping arrangements.
I am very much a creature of habit.

My lady likes to sleep on the left, which was my previous haunt, so I had to move to the right side. I actually prefer the middle, and by myself, ha.

right side. skogafoss always wants to be furthest from the door and closest to the window, but it was annoying to switch whenever we're in a hotel room, especially when on a lengthy tour.

I sleep on the right... meaning right when we're laying in bed. I've always done that, and it just feels weird to have someone on the other (opposite than what I'm used to) side of me.
heh...I shared a bed with my best friend on a trip once, and for whatever reason, I slept on the left. When the alarm went off in the morning, I rolled over and accidentally molested her, since she was where my alarm clock usually was.

I've actually thought about this before. I used to think I slept away from the door, but after thinking it through it ends up that I always just sleep on the left side. Especially if I have someone with me, I need her on my right....not sure why....it just ends up that way. Weird.

At home in my own bed, I tend to sleep in the middle or on the left side, simply because my desk and lamp are on that side, along with my glasses and other nightly needs.
When I'm in bed with my boyfriend, it doesn't matter. We tend to switch it up. :P Whatever side we fall asleep on that night...no big deal. Sometimes, if I think about it before crashing, I'll put my stuff on his night table, just for an excuse to crawl on top of him... hehe |

I sleep on whichever side is closest to the door. Currently that is the right side. At first I thought it was because of the kids, and needing to get up for them in the middle of the night. But as I thought of it, I have always slept on the side closest to the door, and facing the door too. I just feel more comfortable that way. Kinda like in my office, I don't like having my back to the door there either.

I am male, dont bother right or left. But my wife prefers left.
In certain yogic text they say right side is for female and left is for male. In HATHA, HA is male, THA is female (please notice THA contains HA as in woman/man, female/male, she/he). So when you face HATHA, HA is in left and THA on right. Also there is a hindu god called Ardanari with male half on left and female half on right side (when you face the god). A very meaningful symbolism. Sorry if it is very irrelevant here. |

I've been sleeping on the left side of the bed for a while now. We have a futon mattress that has compressed to our body shapes, so we each have our own little dip that fits us juuust right. In any other bed or sleeping situation, I don't care.

Before today it never occurred to me that people would have preferences on these things.
Most of my life so far I've had a bed to myself, so it's been a non-issue. I had one ex who insisted hat she preferred the side closest to the wall, but in practice as we got more comfortable it ended up being wherever we fell. I had a twin bed at the time, so it was pretty cozy no matter how we were arranged. No woman in my life before or since has expressed any kind of a preference. If one did, she'd get her way as I'm quite sure I don't care. When I get to the point of sharing a bed with Magpie, we'll have to deal with this all over again. The real question is, how do two people who are used to having a bed entirely to themselves co-exist in the limited space of a queen sized futon?

I HAVE to sleep on the left. Otherwise I just feel weird.
I think it's for several reasons. When I was a child my single bed was against the wall so I preferred the left side of it so I was facing out when I turned. So I got that habit. Probably because of that I end turning to my left to sleep comfortably. Though now that I have a double bed all to myself I do find myself turning right too. But I am always on the left "side" of the double bed. I can't sleep in the middle of it. It can be annoying because it's like my body is acting like something is missing on that side of the bed. Also, I am left-handed. I also need to walk to the left of my partner to feel right. I'm weird.

Male, and I MUST sleep on the right. (facing the bed) But then, we have a Cali King sized bed, and we've got so much room, that it feels like we're sleeping in the middle.

Being alone can be a very sweet deal, forget I said that other thing. heh
Nah really, I love to have the whole bed to myself. I grew up one of 7 kids in a 890 square foot house. Three bedrooms, one to the parents, one to my little sister, and little brother, and the last bedroom had 3 beds for 5 kids. I was the smallest, so my side of the bed had the most elbows in my back..... Luckily by my teenage years one of my brothers moved out, but then my little brother was too old to be sleeping in the same room as Sis... Long story short, alone is good

Funny, the "1 comforter, 2 people" thing is kind of American, I've learned... here in Iceland, EVERY couple has 2 comforters, sometimes even 2 beds pushed together. It's kind of odd to us, since we like sharing one comforter and falling asleep after cuddling. My Icelandic grandma gave us two duvets for a wedding gift, and we just save them for guests!

Same for us....I'm left-handed and have always preferred the left side. He's right-handed and he seems happier on the right.
But I can sleep anywhere (esp. if I'm tired enough), so when he's snoring loudly and resting comfortably - I just go & sleep on the living room couch or in the guest room! It's nicer & easier than being bitchy & "jabbing" him in the ribs and saying "roll over". Years of adaption!

I typically sleep on the right side of the bed when you are looking at the headboard. However, once I (somewhat) jokingly told my wife that she needed to move to the right side b/c I was going to "bust a move [on her]" and "do my best work from the left side." We laughed, she moved, and I busted a move. Now when I come to bed and find her lying on the right side I've got a pretty good idea what she's got on her mind
