Best Random Dates

The background on this question. Girlfriend and I have been together for a while, slightly long distance at the moment, and a lot of the time we spend together is going to see the various family members, events, etc. I also recently took a job, and moved (closer to her actually, but still 2 hours away). She will be moving in soon, but in the meantime, I have a free weekend with no obligations coming up. I'm trying to think of some random, non-standard things we could do. We're both outdoorsy, but also both limited for cash.

Now the question. What are the best most random dates you have been taken on? Took someone on? Or coolest "things" you've done out of the blue with your significant other?

I imagine we can all get some good ideas, and very possibly some humor out of this.

One of my strangest thus far... (And probably objectionable to some)... Valentines Day Pot Cookies, with pink, red and white M&M's. Funded by me, and prepared, with love, together. Eating them came over the next few days.

I've never had a strange or funny date. Hmmmmm. I'm curious to see what TFPers have been up to.

My favorite: Getting whisked away for the weekend. Get in the car, drive and see where you end up. Since you're outdoorsy, head towards a region suitable for a potential camp and/or rock or mountain climbing, again, depending where you are.

Horseriding. Have a speak with the owners of a school to see if they can do say 20mins of teaching, then just let you go into a few fields on a trek with just a guide, as that's more fun than being in the sandbox thing.

A picnic in a park and a walk around a lake. It will hardly cost you a dime, quite romantic if done right.

you say you´re both outdoorsy. chuck her into the car and drive her somewhere she´s never been. find a way, if possible, to prevent her from knowing where until you arrive. pack whipped cream.

Go have a dance lesson. Something ballroom, or whatever.

It's even more amusing if neither of you can dance.

If both of you can dance, choose a style you've never attempted before.

All very good ideas. My parents own horses, but that's not where we'll be, so we'll save that one. Dance lessons... She can dance, and I can't... maybe that's the ticket.

I'll admit I was hoping for some more "There was this one guy/girl who took me..... .... it was awesome!" But these ideas are great.

Thanks!

I'll give the same answer I always give when people want something fun and unusual to do: sneak onto a local golf course in your bathing suits right before the sprinklers come on at night.

If there's a place you can hike to that has a clear and elevated view of the horizon (a big cliff is good,) get up there and watch the green flash as the sun sets.

Some of the best times I've had with my SO were on long hikes or bike rides. Last summer we were visiting friends for the weekend and while they were busy with a frisbee tournament, we went hiking here:

We had a lot of fun exploring the various trails around the lake, and it was beautiful.

I am a Starving Artist. I have little money, which forces me to be creative. Dinner and a movie has been done in the past and will be in the future. It's a good no fuss 'date night,' but sometimes either the wallet or the boredom calls for something different.

I am also a big fan of walking. I take Magpie for walks all the time. We explore the town, find the little oddities. Sometimes we stop for frozen yogurt. Total cost: $0 ($3 with the frozen yogurt added).

I am a nerd, and like astronomy. We sometimes sit out at night in a secluded spot and I point constellations out. If you don't know any constellations out of hand, you can Google them. Bring a blanket. Total cost: $0.

Since there is an Artist part to the Starving Artist thing, I can also play guitar. Sitting out in the park and plucking the strings while the girl sits by admiringly can be a good ego boost. Leave the case open and it can also be a source of income. How many times have you made a profit on a date? Note, however, that this does require at least a basic level of musical ability.

Rock climbing is a good unconventional date. I worked at a climbing wall as a teen and therefore have an 'in' on that one, but it can be fun even if you don't. Get belaying lessons and then be a climbin' fool. Total cost: Usually around $30 for an hour of climbing.

I've never done it, but I always thought wine making would be a good unconventional date choice as well. No idea what it would cost, but it would be fun.

Me? Never. Some gals I used to have on my probation caseload- pretty sure that's how they made their living. And yes, one of them also played the guitar. How well? I don't know.

I tried this. I've had a GPS for years. My accountant told me she really enjoys it. When I hooked my new GPS up to my laptop it asked me if I wanted to download the nearby "caches." Sure why not? I never did find anything but had a great time on the back side of a Mayan ruin.

Tully, I am jealous of where you live.

The most unique and fun date I have ever been on:
Visited Ripley's Believe it or Not and the Hollywood Wax Museum with a bunch of random cousins of the guy. These cousins were speaking another language that I couldn't come close to understanding, but they were having fun so I was drawn in to the good spirits, stopped for unidentifiable ethnic food for lunch at a random little hole-in-the-wall. The cousin that drove chose the most improbable route possible, passing by some beautiful sights along the way.

This was completely enjoyable because it was so unlike anything I had ever done. It was filled with excitement and nerves and confusion and silliness.

Other ideas:
Fly a kite.
Go to a park and watch a random little-league soccer or baseball game. Bring a picnic lunch and cheer loudly for opposing teams.
Walk along the beach and throw back in every moving jellyfish you find along the way.
Visit tidepools.
Go sailing.
Watch for shooting stars.
Visit an obscure art museum that has good reviews.

I think the best one I've been on wasn't even a date. Some girl asked if I wanted to go to the Museum of Natural Science with her. I had a blast.

Some of the other things I've done though include concert and shows. Those are always fun.

I sort of had a random date with a girl friend of mine on Monday. We've been spending a lot of time together in recent months see. On Monday, she decided to take the day off to visit me, which was nice. We just chill at home for a couple hours until 4 or 5 when I decided to take her to a beach near my house. She was amazed at how nice and "secluded" it was (comparing to the ones we normally go to). Even though it's practically next door to me, I don't go to this beach much so we spent the next hour or so exploring the beach including some really cool hiking trail. Then we went to the mall 20 minutes up north, walked around, bought some stuff for myself. Went home, watched a movie while cuddling. Feel asleep while cuddling, and in my sleepy daze, we kissed. Awesome day.
