I always call my wife if I'm not traveling with her. My wife calls her parents. My mom likes me to call but I sometimes forget and she calls me. Personally I don't see the point. If my plane crashes, it will be all over the news. No news, no crash. If I'm driving long distance its a little different.

If I am ever away for a significant period of time, I will inform both of my parents, my girlfriend, and two friends of mine. My mother ends up spreading the news to the rest of the family while the others presumably keep the knowledge to themselves. This has not happened often, as I don't travel much.

Hum i think the parents are worth a call but beyond that i dont see the point. In a world of cell phones email and instant messanges how often is anyone really gone anyway?
