What Are Your Favorite Simple Luxuries?

What do you do to make your life a little more comfortable and luxurious? One thing I like doing is buying new socks. Having brand new socks in my closet makes me look forward to getting dressed. It's nothing fancy, but makes me happy.

What Are Your Favorite Simple Luxuries?

Halx 08-02-2008 05:30 PM

I don't know if I have many simple ones, but I now enjoy being able to walk a short ways from my front door to a basketball court to play. I really like that.

girldetective 08-02-2008 05:57 PM

Leaving all my windows open all day and all night long.

Congratulations on your good move Halx.

Punk.of.Ages 08-02-2008 06:42 PM

All I need to be happy is my guitar and a smoke.

yellowmac 08-02-2008 07:31 PM

I'm not a regular coffee drinker, and I don't hit up Starbucks too often, but to me, a nice Frappuccino qualifies as a simple luxury to me. A nice, occasional treat, especially on a hot, summer day.

mixedsubstance 08-02-2008 07:36 PM

buying new clothes, watching Friends, stopping and relishing the moment I am in with my son or my boyfriend, taking a long shower, taking a short jog, exercise...

thingstodo 08-03-2008 06:29 AM

switching from HBO to Showtime and having a season of Weeds to watch on On Demand.

Push-Pull 08-03-2008 06:29 AM

Simply being home for the weekend while being stuck in some, eh, "quaint" government dorms is luxurious to me. Fluffy towels, private showers, my own toilet, being in our ginormous king-sized bed naked with my wife. Those are pretty damn luxurious things to me right now, and I can't wait until I'm back for good.

thespian86 08-03-2008 07:58 AM

-waking up before my alarm goes off and thinking "there's more time :)"
-A cold shower after a day at work; just letting the water run over my head.
-Driving around the highways here blasting music in my car with the sun roof down.
-Sex.

Suibhal 08-03-2008 08:05 AM

Easy! Clean, line-dried sheets, and a shower before bed.

Bear Cub 08-03-2008 09:48 AM

DVR, and having every other Friday off from work.

Cernunnos 08-03-2008 10:09 AM

On a typical day:

-Being able to sleep in if I choose
-Waking up with a cup of loose leaf tea
-Relaxing in an air conditioned home
-Having access to a private backyard pool and jacuzzi
-Fresh herbs and produce from my garden
-Internet access
-Chocolate (the kind you don't find at the supermarket)

Jeremyn 08-03-2008 10:37 AM

After a 10 mile walk/jog, getting home, taking a lukewarm shower, having a glass of tea while you soak your feet in epsom salt.
Having the windows open while a nice Spring breeze fills your apartment

CandleInTheDark 08-03-2008 10:54 AM

I guess it all depends on how you qualify simple. For me it's good beer, a nice bike ride, and strumming my guitar.

levite 08-03-2008 11:46 AM

I like a perfect Sunday.... Beach, my girl, sun and good waves, a cooler full of hard cider, and the surf music playing loud. At sunset, frozen strawberry margaritas, and Baja fish tacos; then, home to bed....

ngdawg 08-03-2008 11:57 AM

Sleeping in without having tossed and turned all night. The last few days, I've really missed that.

snowy 08-03-2008 12:08 PM

Quality coffee with cream.

Macaroni and cheese.

A hot shower.

A cooking or travel magazine.

A hug from a small child.

canuckguy 08-03-2008 12:33 PM

living close enough to my office that i can come home for lunch! I live 2 blocks away so I walk home and veg out for an hour, nap or whatever.

Great way to recharge and reset yourself for the afternoon, and it really breaks up my day.

dogzilla 08-03-2008 12:51 PM

Home made ice cream, especially key lime, amaretto, cinnamon or clove flavors.

Getting in a nicely made bed.
Good food.
Grey Goose.

genuinegirly 08-03-2008 01:13 PM

Bubble baths. Mmmmmmmm. Nothing better on a rough day than a relaxing soak in fresh, peach-scented bubbles. Hopping out of the bath, wrapping myself in a fluffy robe, then climbing into pressed, starched, cold sheets.

StanT 08-03-2008 01:47 PM

Waking up in the mountains every single morning.

Getting here wasn't simple, but I never cease to enjoy it.

I just ate a bowl of Lucky Charms for dinner.

When I was a kid, my mom would never buy me junk cereal like that. Now that I'm footing my own cereal bills, I get to say whether I get to eat bad marshmallows or not.

Charlatan 08-03-2008 03:53 PM

Massage. I like treating myself to good massage. If I could afford it, I would have one every day.

Time to myself. I love going out for dinner or out for a beer at the pub. Just me and a good book.

Spartanx9 08-03-2008 07:48 PM

Whenever it rains down here in Tucson, a nice cold glass of tea while sitting out on my porch watching the rain.

Dunno, it always seems to put me in a good mood :p

Atreides88 08-03-2008 08:08 PM

Long, hot showers after being in the field for a few days or after a hard day.

Being able to sleep in, period.

Fresh clean underwear.

Nimetic 08-04-2008 02:06 AM

Reading in my back-yard, on a spring or autumn morning - with a fresh coffee to wake up with.

noodle 08-04-2008 02:28 AM

a nice, long, hot bath with candles, a good book and a glass of wine.

a really good book out on the balcony with the kitties in the rain.

getting my feet rubbed.

having someone else perform a household chore that i hate.

popcorn with parmesan cheese while curled up on the couch during a good movie.

open-faced turkey sandwiches with spinach, tomatoes, cheddar cheese.

and, like Charlatan, there is no better pleasure i can enjoy (without my partner, of course) than a massage.

Discover Magazine...in a very Hot Bath.

My personalized daily comics online from the Houston Chronicle. Wallowing in the sunday Washington Post with 5G. Our new shower head.

MSD 08-04-2008 06:04 AM

I haven't had hot water at home for two months. A chance for a hot shower is a nice luxury.

Cynthetiq 08-04-2008 06:07 AM

Since neither are available in Manhattan... a quick drive to Jersey City for IHOP or when travelling... Denny's or Waffle House

International House of Pancakes Breakfast Sampler or Rooty, Tooty, Fresh and Fruity.
Denny's Grand Slam Breakfast.
Waffle House 2 eggs, 2 bacon, hashbrowns.

what do all of these dishes have in common?

Hash browns.

stupid North Easterners prefer home fries....

I remember feeling that exact same way the first time I went to the store after moving away from home. I bought all kinds of crap, and was eating cheese sticks with chocolate chip cookie dough for dinner, In fact, I chose to go to the 24-hour supermarket at like 3 AM just to drive home the point that I was finally making my own decisions. It was probably the most free I've felt my entire life.

My simple luxury is just quiet time. Now that me and the Mrs. work different hours, I get home early and can wind down in a nice quiet house for an hour or 2 before she gets home and tells me about her day. Its priceless.

QuasiMondo 08-05-2008 02:37 PM

A fast car, a tankful of gas, and an open road.

I do love that feeling, especially in America. Not quite the same feeling in Iceland, but I still enjoy it.

I also love falling asleep reading a novel in bed. Have done that ever since I was a kid, especially during summer breaks.

Bare feet in fresh-cut grass, and then lying down in the grass and smelling all that green goodness... on a warm, calm day, there's nothing better. (Assuming my allergy medication is working.) :p

Hot water never, ever runs out here in Iceland--there's a perpetual source underground, so your showers can be as long and guilt-free as you like. :) I love just soaking in any hot, hot water--and the geothermal hot pots/hot rivers are awesome as well. No better way to relax me.

Having a beer and a good, stimulating conversation with my husband after dinner is wonderful, too.

And lying around naked together after sex, skin to skin, is lovely. :)

tinycities 08-07-2008 03:11 PM

Decent, fresh coffee, preferably made in one of these. This is even better when it's accompanied by something sweet, like homemade jam on toast, or a Danish pastry.

Going to bed, sleeping really well, and waking up with a completely clear head and absolutely nothing negative playing on my mind.

Good company and a decent pint in a pub garden on a warm summer evening.

Driving wherever I want, with interesting scenery and with no destination in mind, listening to music or talking with a passenger who appreciates it too.

Fantastic, stimulating conversation with another person in the early hours of the morning, when the time is irrelevant because you don't have to get up in the morning and because you're so engaged you could talk for hours and not notice time passing.

Enjoying and immersing myself in music - playing the piano or guitar, composing, or just listening to some decent music that I love.

A really fucking awesome burger.

Oh yes, add that one to my list, too. Seattle has a plethora of Fucking Awesome Burger places... top of my list (at least back in 2003) would be Red Mill tied with Dick's. Burgermaster and Red Robin aren't too shabby, either. Currently paying about $10 for a mediocre burger in Iceland--that's the best we can ask for.

jorgelito 08-07-2008 04:10 PM

Toilet paper.

fresnelly 08-07-2008 04:26 PM

A good book, magazine or newspaper and the time to read it.

The Library.

A sparsely attended matinee movie.

Bear Cub 08-07-2008 04:40 PM

The first cut into a fresh piece of construction paper.

inBOIL 08-07-2008 09:04 PM

Being alone in the forest on a foggy day, with no-one around for miles.

Working/going to school during second shift. I love sleeping until 10 every morning and going to bed around 2 every night.

Having a hot tub and pool that I can enjoy every night.

Ayashe 08-08-2008 03:03 PM

A hot cup of tea
A rainy night by a fire
A cuddle with someone I love
A hot bath with scented oils
A warm sun on my skin while I sit and relax in the yard
A good friend

mixedmedia 08-08-2008 03:07 PM

simple luxuries:

good coffee
good sheets
nag champra
bath oil
getting dressed up for masturbation...this a new one.

FelixP 06-19-2010 02:11 PM

A fresh can of dip, a hot cup of coffee, lunch breaks, the view from the mountains, warm clothes that just came out of the dryer. A gentle breeze. Ahhhh.

Xerxys 06-19-2010 05:28 PM

9 minutes to work.

12 minutes to work via McDonalds sausage biscuit.

I can get to work at 7, not take a lunch, leave at three, or at 7:30, or 8 ... l love my job.

genuinegirly 06-20-2010 04:44 AM

Sparkling water, starched & pressed clothes, mini carrots, comfortable shoes, cute fuzzy critter-pets.

Lindy 06-22-2010 09:51 AM

My shower head with no flow restrictor and plenty of hot water.
Spicy Texas chile with no beans.
Good coffee (NOT burnt Starbucks!) with real cream.
Morning sex with plenty of time.
A good highway with no traffic.
Western Swing.
Clean sheets dried outdoors on the clothesline.

Lindy

Having exactly what somebody needs to fix their major crisis in my backpack or vehicle.

A: "If only we had X!"
B: *whips out X*

If only I had a storm-cellar.

Plan9 06-22-2010 01:20 PM

...you could use GucciLvr's mouth.

YaWhateva 06-22-2010 03:06 PM

New Mexican green chili. When I have lived in Texas and on the east coast, the chili they had was absolutely ridiculous compared to New Mexican chili.

hunnychile 06-22-2010 03:11 PM

Fresh cotten bed linens, straight from the dryer. In Winter esp. ;)

Sparkling water.

A new CD that has all great songs that I love.

A true friend for life.

noodle 06-22-2010 03:36 PM

Ice cold dasani water over clean ice. In a glass.
On the porch in 97 degree weather watching the storm roll in.

Baraka_Guru 06-22-2010 03:47 PM

Looking and watching.

Looking at and watching clouds, trees, wet pavement, wet grass, people, cars, planes, cats, dogs, birds, moving water, still water, still shadows, moving shadows, and so on.

yeah! People watching is up there for me. One of my favorite pastimes.

lunxpress 06-22-2010 06:46 PM

400 thread count sheets. Quiet solitude without distraction. Freshly squeezed orange juice. A large healthy basil plant. The sky. Watching nesting yard birds. Moments that provoke side-splitting laughter. Not having to wait in any line, ever.

Plan9 06-22-2010 08:18 PM

Huh. I just realized many of us went:

Simple luxuries = simple pleasures.

...

I guess my simple luxury would be a motorcycle ride. I don't need the bike, but I bought it because it makes me feel like an astronautsamurai.

Willravel 06-22-2010 09:19 PM

My favorite simple luxury is cooking all my own meals. I eat like a fucking king for less money than it would take to eat crap pre-made food.

Over the weekend I had:
Denver omelete with fresh California grapes
Stir fried bok choy, green pepper, onion, and garlic
Gourmet salmon cakes (nice and spicy) along with linguine in a pecan arugula pesto
Bagel with cream cheese and cucumber (I love cucumber sandwiches)
Mediterranean chicken panino with homemade potato salad and dark iced tea
Risotto

Wes Mantooth 06-22-2010 10:35 PM

The first cigarette in the morning...ecstasy

Sitting back on my lawnmower with an ice cold beer

First cast of the rod into a mirror like lake or pond at the crack of dawn

One of my absolute favorites that I miss so much since I moved was sitting around a roaring campfire at night, with friends, in the middle of the north Maine woods during the height of autumn. Yeah the end of your nose is always cold but the whiskey tastes great and the sky is so vivid! Almost no light pollution.

Night driving, anywhere, any route.

Bowing out some Dvorak or Bach on my double bass just for fun...if a thunder storm happens by, even better.

A hot summer night, a cold cooler of beer, a pouch of red man and a baseball game on the radio.

lurkette 06-23-2010 04:33 AM

A hammock.

Dark chocolate.

Naps.

Titan_Uranus 06-24-2010 02:57 AM

cooking & exercise.

Walt 06-24-2010 06:06 AM

Ice cubes. Showers. Window screens that keep the bugs out.

postpacific 06-25-2010 10:20 AM

a massage, new socks, having the windows open on a nice spring day, outdoor hot tubs at night, jamba juice, wired magazine.

mew 07-21-2010 07:39 PM

A nice shower before hopping into a fresh, clean bed.
Sleeping in
Yummy coffee
Chocolate/cake/pastry
Family cooking

canuckguy 07-27-2010 08:43 AM

A vacation day with nothing planned....got up early and nice long bike ride in the country. Quick BBQ at home and now heading to the beach for a swim. I love summer.

CaliLivChick 07-27-2010 08:58 PM

Having my own apartment, instead of just my own room (looking forward to when Mom doesn't need to be taken care of anymore).

Idyllic 07-27-2010 09:38 PM

Watching the boys sleep, and just listening to them breath, all is quiet, ahhhh, the luxury of peaceful moments.

My second luxury would be to hear them say, "Good morning mom" and give me their morning hugs, even sweeter, but as the day progresses, I am looking forward to the whole sleeping thing again, desperately, :), ahhh quiet.

Also, reading all your posts at TFP, this is a luxury for me, being a part of this community, having the time and the guts to participate even when I doubt myself.
