To put it simply, ours sucks.
It's a Whirlpool and came with the condo.
It has etched 90% of our dishes and glassware no matter what detegent or rinse agent I've tried.
I've even had them come out and check it but everything is "working fine."
They have no idea why the dishes come out dirtier than when they went in.
We've tried everything.
And I do mean everything, so we're not looking to try to fix this one.
I even took it apart down to the minutiae of the motor and cleaned everything.
We have super hard water in this part of Florida so I'm looking for a dishwasher that can handle that and doing a load maybe every three days or so... yes, we rinse everything and make sure there's no stuck on food and stuff per manufacturer's and repair man's advice.
I'm just curious if anyone is in love with their dishwasher or at least appreciative of it.
I'm sick of this stupid thing, I'd rather just do them myself, but then I get mad again and I'm tired of being mad.

I've inherited a Miele that is about 12-15 years old. It does a great job and is whisper quiet. My dishes do have crud left from time to time - more a result of the refusal to do even a minimal rinse before loading the dishes than the machine itself not doing the job. Mind you, I just had a hose replaced due to a leak, but the hose had been kinked by the original installer and it still lasted over a decade.
The big problem with these dishwashers is that they need to be serviced by a certified Miele repairman - the machine is European and if you do have a dishwasher malfunction, repair parts will only be supplied to an authorized repairman. My contractor was able to get me a hose that fit - but if my problem had been inside the machine I would have had to go the certified repairman route.

We bought a new Maytag last September. We've had no problems, and we're very satisfied with the cleaning results.

The hard water is the likely cuprit for the etching on your glassware. I've known some who add some white vinegar to the last rinse cycle. They say it works.

We used to have mega hard water, but fortunately the city just changed it's water supply and don't have that issue anymore. For what it's worth, our dishwasher also worked like crap, so it's very possible that hard water is the issue.

A couple of weeks ago I just bought a Kenmore.... something, and it works extraordinarily well. Unfortunately, I just had my kitchen remodeled as well, and that coincided with the change in water supply, so... I basically wrote all this for no reason, since I can't offer any solid comparison. Sorry

My parents have a Bosch dishwasher that they picked largely because my mom's best friend has had a Bosch for years and loves it (the lady is a home economics teacher--she did her research beforehand). It's super-quiet, and considering how soiled the plates/glasses/pans/pots are when my brother (he's lazy) puts them in the dishwasher it does a spectacular job cleaning them. When they go to buy a new dishwasher for the second house my parents purchased, they'll probably be getting a Bosch. It's a fancy European dishwasher, for sure, but they're sold at Lowe's and Home Depot these days.

We've had a Fisher & Paykel for 3 years and absolutely love it. This is the best dishwasher I've had since I used an industrial one when I washed dishes for a catering company in college. It will get anything clean, regardless of how soiled you think it might be. And the fact that it has 2 drawers makes it fantastic for when we entertain. We can wash different things on different cycles at the same time.

Jenair and Kenmore make good units as does Maytag who I think actually produces the Kenmore.

I know, the water softener is on the list.
The problem with this current dishwasher is that there's hardly any pressure, the stupid top arm "forgets" to spin when the pressure lowers enough and the door for the soap never opens at the right time.
I've cleaned the invidual holes with lime-a-way and clr as instructed, run vinegar through at times, run an empty cycle with bleach, with CLR and with just vinegar at different times, changed soaps, used less dishes, more dishes, checked the drain.... everything.
The water softener system is a potential issue with the condos that we're looking into, but it won't change the pressure issue which only exists in the dishwasher and the cheap-ass clothes washer that came included. I hate Whirlpool.

Actually, Kenmore is largely produced by Whirlpool. It depends on the appliance, though--refrigerators are manufactured by Electrolux (manufacturers of Frigidaire) and LG, for example. Electrolux also produces other appliances for the Kenmore brand. But Maytag is not one of the producers of the Kenmore brand, regardless of appliance.

And I definitely wouldn't go with a Kenmore, regardless of who actually manufactures it. It has more to do with Sears. We once lived in a house with only Kenmore appliances, including a Kenmore dishwasher. It's a bitch to deal with Sears for repairs and parts--their customer service is AWFUL.

I had a water pressure problem with my dishwasher, and the troubleshooting guide said my water pressure might not be enough to spin the arm. I thought about it for a few minutes, and realized that the pump is what pressurizes the water for cleaning, not the water line (I ended up disassembling down to the pump and cleaning a lot of crap out of there, including a spoon that somehow managed to get through the strainer and filter.) If you're having those problems, the thing just sucks, and you say you want a new one, I can give you the following info:

I used to love Maytag, my house up in Oregon had all Maytags in it. The washer, dryer and dishwasher are great. But I bought a Maytag frig. and it was a real POS. Ice maker always froze up and wouldn't make ice. The thing made more freaking noise then any frig I ever owned. The water through the door would stick "on" and you had to unplug it to get the water to stop pouring out the damn thing. I complained, thinking I got a lemon. They replaced it, after several months, with one that basically did the same shit. So now I have all Maytag with an LG frig.

But the dishwasher is great.

We bought a Maytag a couple of weeks ago at Sears. It was clearanced out and about 400 bucks maybe. It replaced a Roper which is a real POS IMO. IT makes less noise during the wash cycle than the Roper did filling with water.

As far as Sears' customer service, I do all my own repairs. Appliance troubleshooting and repair is easier than you think.

As I understand it, Maytag had some HUGE reliability problems. In May 2006, they were bought out by Whirlpool. The quality is much better now.
