For all you Brits/Canadians out there...

Anyone have any idea what the requirements are to become a doctor in either Canada or Britain? I currently reside in the U.S. and am almost done with my first year at a Four Year University, and plan on attending Medical school. However, I have a strong desire to study medicine in the United Kingdom/Canada. Anybody know by chance what the requirements are to get into a 'med school' in Britain/Canada? Better yet, if I finish Med School here, will I have to get re-certified in either Britain or Canada?

I don't know the exact requirements, but I know that the process for becoming a doctor in Canada is essentially the same as it is in the US, at least from what I understand of it : undergrad>MCAT>Med school>Residency. I should imagine that if you get your PhD stateside you'll be able to bring it up here with little to no fuss; I'm almost entirely sure that it's fully translatable. Regardless, we are experiencing a shortage of physicians nationwide at the moment and have been for a few years now, so any new doctors will be welcomed with open arms I should think.

Yeah, it varies a bit school to school, but here are a couple of examples of considerations you might have to make:

Queen's University
(Kingston, ON)
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents (landed immigrants) by 1 February following submission of the OMSAS application.
University of Ottawa (Ottawa, ON)
Citizenship

Applications will not be accepted from applicants who are not Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents (proof of permanent resident status must accompany the application at the time it is submitted). However, there is one exception to the rule: eligible children of alumni of the University of Ottawa who have completed studies at the Faculty of Medicine.

Credentialing Of Non-Canadian Grades

Candidates with a permanent residence in Canada who do not meet our eligibility requirements relative to completion of Canadian studies and require inclusion of their international studies must have their foreign transcript assessed by World Education Services (WES).
Here's a list of Canadian medical schools for your reference. Check each one to see their admissions requirements for non-Canadians.

EDIT:

To answer your questions regarding medical certification, etc., in Canada:
Medical Training/Licensure System in Canada

Please do come. We need lots of doctors. (Hint: Work in a smaller city/town and you will be well paid.)

I met a doctor from the US a couple of years ago - she did have to go through some sort of certification process with exams when she got to Canada as I believe there are a few practices and of course laws that are different, but I don't think it was too crazy. I seem to recall her studying for a few months, taking a couple of tests, and off she went.

If you come out of your current degree with a good honours then you should be able to go into a 4 year medicine degree in the UK.

Most likely if you do a medical course in the US you will have to do some sort of recertification.
