Scar remedies?

Hey y'all!

My two-year-old managed to put his bottom teeth through his bottom lip in the tub the other day. We opted not to get stitches (the doc didn't recommend them for his particular gash) but I can tell he'll scar a little. Since it's on his face I'd like the scarring to be minimal.

So, TFPers, which scar "remedies" have you used on yourself or your child(ren)? Which have worked for you? I've seen the Mederma commercials but have never tried it. Any experiences with that? Also, do you think it's safe to use so close to his mouth? I forgot to ask the urgent care doc all of this at the time :-(

Thanks!

i had the same question recently when i was hit above my eye with a piece of steel, i did a search and this is what i found http://www.newomen.com/displayarticle108.html. my eye is healed now and the scar looks pretty good, still noticeable but better than what i thought it was going to be.

Make sure he's not picking at or making it more irritated. Prevention is far better than removal. Otherwise bag-balm has done wonders on my scars although those weren't on my lips. Perhaps try to keep things liquid for him and just keep it as clean as possible.

Just keep it clean until the scab has fully healed. If you want to go natural after that, use some Vitamin E on the scarred area.

The way cosmetic surgeons recommend is to clean it with hydrogen peroxide every 2-4 hours and put nerosporin and a new bandage on if it needs it.

You want to avoid the hard scab forming.

LOL, the link Aerobit sent me contradicts the advice given by ChassisWelder and ASU2003. It says not to use vitamin E because it inhibits new cell growth, and that hydrogen peroxide kills new cells. I didn't know that about vitamin E but I've always heard that hydrogen peroxide causes more scarring. I think I'll skip those two for now.

Bag Balm, however, is a wonderful and amazing way to instantly heal a diaper rash (seriously, one application and the rash is GONE... it's extraordinary...) One would think that if it can heal broken skin on a kid's ass so effectively, then it would also be able to heal the skin under their lip, right? I like GG1's suggestion. I think I shall try this.

At the moment I am keeping it moist with A&D (I left the bag balm at daycare). He's super good about not picking at it, so that's a big help too

After it's healed, however, I would like to try something like Mederma. Has anybody had experience with something like this? Something applied to the scar after it has already healed?

Thanks for the suggestions

Eh, I'm not too sold on a writeup by a company that sells cosmetic products.

While Vitamin E doesn't necessarily "erase" scars like a lot of other stuff claims to do, it helps keep the skin pliable. As a result, it can minimize the buildup of collagen in the skin which leads to hypertrophic scars. At least, this is what I was told by a local dermatologist, as well as my surgeon. I had a pretty wicked gash in my throat post-thyroid cancer surgery, and my scarring is pretty minimal compared to others with a similarly performed surgery.

did they use dermabond, steri-strips or just left it to heal?

he's only 2. if it scars, it will be visible for a few years but will more than likely fade to nothing as he gets older. facial wounds heal very well because the face and scalp have an extensive blood supply plus the fact he's only 2 and is still growing rapidly.

Yeah, H2O2 is a bad plan on new tissue. It easily destroys cell walls, which is why it's a great antimicrobial. Fresh cells, especially on more delicate areas, can have thinner cell walls. *shrug*

I dunno about VitE either. It's used to reduce stretch marks, but that to make the skin more elastic, not to heal a laceration. Hope you find something good hun!

If you're that concerned about it, I recommend consulting a dermatologist.

We took our daughter to a dermatologist after a burn on her arm, to reduce the scar that developed. We ended up getting a prescription for a clear tape to put on her arm daily, that had steroids in it. It worked well. I am sure they have worked with scars on lips, too.

I will tell you the same thing by PS told me when I had surgery....when it comes to scars you're at the mercy of genetics. There is no "scar medicine" out there that is going to make it magically go away.

when I had my reduction he told me to not waste a single dime on the products out there that promote healing scars. His advice to me was to alternate daily with 100% cocoa butter (we are talking the really hard kind in the push up stick that they sell in the ethnic hair care section of the store, kinda like a big chapstick) NOT lotion with cocoa butter in it....it has to be 100% with nothing else (which means it will not be in a lotion form) and antibacterial cream.

Thats what I did and while I have some scaring (of course it was major surgery) its not all that bad.

DO NOT USE peroxide...it will kill the healthy cells and you dont want to do that

Are you trying to remove his best supporting actor as a 'villian' opportunity?

As someone who has had 27 stitches in my face, I'm of the 'nature will heal it' club. I have two scars on my face, one quite noticeable on my chin, and one smaller one between my mouth and nose.

Personally, I'd just leave it alone as much as possible to heal and not make a big deal out of it.
