2am wake up call
I'm a chronic procrastinator and leave things until the last minute. So in fear of an all too rapidly approaching exam I spent the entire day up until 1:30am cramming at the school library with a buddy of mine. We are tired and nothing is being absorbed anymore so we call it quits and head home.
On the way home we see there has been an accident near our house there is no emergency help there. We arrive second on the scene so we get out to see if they are in need of any help. On inspection there is one car completely totaled stuck in a snow bank and a woman on the ground screaming for her mother. There is an obviously drunk man trying to comfort her. They are both twentysomethings that had spent a night at the local club. Her leg is completely fucked, broken and twisted around, she is bleeding from the head and is screaming about pain in her arm. The guy trying to comfort her being drunk and is constantly grabbing her leg/arm/head and shaking her causing her to scream out in pain. I get the guy to back off and my friend grabs a blanket from our car. An ambulance had been called so there was not much else we could do or at least knew how to do so we started talking to the people that we first on the scene. They say the drunk male had been driving and crashed into a streetlight pole and that he was trying to changed his story to say that there was a third person driving that had fled the scene. He is obviously lying and was driving drunk. So when ambulance and police showed up we briefly gave our account and then were issued leave. This was a big wake up call for me. I always knew the dangers of the road and of drunk driving but it was never real to me before tonight. I tend to drive a little recklessly and would step in the car with someone that had had a few drinks (not hammered though). That ends now. It's was scary hell seeing that woman lying there in serious troubled and knowing that i would have made decisions similar to what she did. It looks as though she will live and make a decent recovery. It will be a rough month or two and her leg will probably never be back to normal. I'm changing my ways tonight. Have any of you ever had a similar wake up call? If so how did you deal with it?

I imagine you must still feel quite shaken up by this.
My cousin and four of his friends,(all 19) were killed when they were drag racing on a country road. I know that I had taken too many chances when younger... That was a real wake up call for me, and it has stuck. What I had to witness my family go through was horrendous. I vowed to never cause my family pain like that through my reckless actions. You had courage to help the woman, and she will never forget that. I am glad you were there for her. |

It's never easy seeing things like that but perhaps some good will come it in the perspective it has given you.

I wasn't a completely reckless driver but I'd definitely take more risks until about 2 months ago when I didn't check an intersection well enough and was plowed into by an asshole who was traveling well over the speed limit.
The impact occurred only a few inches behind me into the rear drivers side door and the end of the car. It left my back door crumpled like a potato chip and bent my axle. If I were going just a little slower or he a bit faster - he'd have driven directly into me and either killed or seriously injured me. Ever since that night, I just don't take any chances.
