Guys: What do you shave with?

After seeing the other thread about when you shave, I was curious as to what types of razor other men like to use. I used to use a Mach 3, but I received an electric razor for my birthday, and since then it's all I've ever used.

MiSo 12-03-2007 12:35 PM

fusion razor.

can't live without it.

+1, with vibration

Had mach 3 with vibrate, bought the fusion instead of new blades. No real preference between the two.

Leto 12-03-2007 01:00 PM

Braun electric razor.

Willravel 12-03-2007 01:11 PM

Regular razor. I can't stand electric razors.

sapiens 12-03-2007 01:32 PM

A disposable bic with two blades.

BogeyDope 12-03-2007 01:34 PM

I'm curious as to why so many people use conventional razors. In my personal experience, I get a closer, quicker [and less hazardous] shave with my electric than conventional's.

Have any of you even tried an electric?

Willravel 12-03-2007 01:42 PM

I get the closest shave with a conventional (mach 3, non turbo) and warm face oil then I ever could with an electric. The oil tends to be a problem for many electric razors.

The_Jazz 12-03-2007 01:47 PM

The Mach 3 does very well for me. Every once in a while, I'll shave with the disposable Bic at the gym and am always underwhelmed.

I sometimes shave with an electric on the weekends since I can usually multitask while using it (read: chasing a toddler). I cannot get as good a shave, particularly on my neck, with the electric. My cheeks are usually about the same (possibly better), but the historic criticism (not just from me) about the electric is that it is impossible for anyone with a significant amount of stubble on their necks to get a close shave.

Well, I agree with you there. I tend to "forget" to shave on weekdays as college+a job can be hectic. But when I'm in that situation, I usually shave with a Fusion, then clean up with my electric. Whatever works, I guess

LoganSnake 12-03-2007 02:26 PM

I use an electric razor. Shaving cream and razors tend to make my face hurt like hell. Although every now and then I use a mach 3 that I have, I would say once a month I use that one.

laconic1 12-03-2007 06:57 PM

My skin always got really irritated with whatever I shaved with. Mach3, Fusion, Quattro, just about every blade you can think of. I also tried about ten different types of shaving creams and oils. Finally I settled on Bump Fighter disposable razors with whatever brand of shave gel designed for sensitive skin. It doesnt give the ultimate close shave, but it doesn't tear my skin up either.

Push-Pull 12-03-2007 08:15 PM

I'm with WK on this one. I have my FIL's old straight razor with replaceable blade. (A shaper blade available at beauty supply shops) Absolutely the smoothest my mug has ever gotten. Trouble is, I can't find the blades around here, so I'm stuck with regular razors.

BTW, the straight razor will give you a GREAT shave, but there is a very steep learning curve with it. Be very careful......

biznatch 12-03-2007 11:49 PM

The 2 blade Gillettes.

evilbeefchan 12-04-2007 01:34 AM

I got my straight razor at a local cutlery shop, a lower end model for $40. Strop was about $12, and brush was an xmas gift (I believe retails around $50). Not cheap, but I always get a great shave from it.

This isn't for one of those quick shaves before work, though. It'll take at least 10 minutes including lathering and shaving (longer if you do a second run against the grain). I get best results after a hot shower, though keeping the mirror clear is quite annoying.

If you want the feel of the straight without the honing/maintenance, as well as want a cheaper alternative, Dovo makes straight razors with disposable blades. I think replacement blades run from $5 to $8, depending on size and manufacturer.

Mach 3 w/vibrate. best there is, as far as I'm concerned

Daniel_ 12-04-2007 01:56 PM

Gillette Fusion w/ Vibrate.

I also use a Philips Cool Shave when I'm in a hurry and just need a polish.

Dead serious.

I don't like normal razors. They don't do a very good job.

Charlatan 12-04-2007 04:13 PM

I've had a barber give me a shave with a straight razor but ended up getting too many ingrown hairs.

I actually don't know what I use anymore... it's metal and uses a disposable three blade thing. I stocked up on a big pile of them before I moved here and haven't had to buy any in the past year and half. I think I am down to my last four blades.

As for electric, they never give me a close enough shave for my liking and sometimes get caught in my beard.

indebut 12-04-2007 05:02 PM

Mach 3 turbo for me. I'm not real keen on the electric shavers, though I've never invested in a really nice one either.

MSD 12-04-2007 09:44 PM

My post in the other thread covered the process, I use a Shick Quattro Titanium (and have a pack of the 2-blade Shick disposables in case I run out of blades or have to go on vacation.) Exfoliating and using a good post-shave healer eliminate all but the occasional ingrown hair. A gift set of Clinique for Men exfoliating face scrub, shaving cream, and post-shave soother is $30 at most department stores and will last a month or two. I throw down another $12 for the extra strength face wash and it beats the hell out of bar soap for the way my skin looks and feels. A few times a year, my mom gets a $50 gift card to Saks Fifth Ave when they sponsor events at the museum where she works, and she usually passes them on to me, so my shaving supplies are practically free.

I'm probably going to get a straight razor and accessories for myself this holiday season and try them out, the old single-blade safety razor that was posted above is pretty good, but I want something a step above.

I'd rather lather up and put my face to a running lawnmower. At least then I'll know what to expect.

rlbond86 12-04-2007 11:44 PM

I used to use a mach 3. I got a much better shave than with my electric razor, but it irritated the hell out of my skin, and I never could find an aftershave to really fix that. I'll settle for a little bit of stubble (the lady likes it that way anyway) instead of irritated skin.

Kpax 12-05-2007 12:14 AM

Another for the electric. I'm always too in a hurry to shave with gel and blade, and I look like a catfish if I skip it.

My Norelco electric can't hold a charge and is a pain to clean, but I got a $10 battery one from the drugstore and it has lasted for 3 years.

highthief 12-05-2007 07:00 AM

Mach 3 - having tried everything else, I have to conclude this is the perfect razor.

soma 12-05-2007 07:31 AM

Cheapass bic disposable. Not great, but it's good enough for me. :)

I've been using a mix of electric and various blade styles since I was 17. I find that using the blade can sometimes give me ingrown hairs under my chin. The electric is faster, cleaner and gives a much smoother (closer? no, smoother) shave.

tooth 12-05-2007 08:15 AM

It's blue, has two blades, a swivel head, a lubrication strip, and I throw it away and get a new one out of the bag every couple of weeks. Does that help?

hrandani 12-05-2007 08:22 AM

As a Welshman an electric razor is out of the question. It's like using a weedwhacker in the midst of the deepest Amazon. If I had less epic body hair and beard density it would be nice on occasion not to have to go through the shaving ordeal. I'm downright jealous of some of my less hirsute friends.

I tried the straight razor for a while and loved it but it scared the ever loving piss out of the missus. Stuck with the mach 3 for now.

I can't shave directly against the grain under the chin, but going 120° against it after exfoliating and using a post-shave healer after the shower, I can deal with the one ingrown that usually pops up by pulling it out with tweezers.

Another tip: if you shave in the shower or after, your pores are wide open. Splash or run cold water over your face to close them up and you'll reduce irritation and ingrowns.

Average_Joe 12-05-2007 10:06 AM

I just use the cheapest disposable razors I can find. My beard is so heavy that it looks like I have a permanent 5-o'clock shadow no matter what kind of razor I use. The wife doesn't mind, so why not save a bit of $$$.

healer 12-05-2007 11:01 AM

I have no facial hair above the jawline, and the hair that does grow on my neck and under my chin is extremely sparse. Manual razor's usually give me irritated skin, so I've stuck to electrics for the most part.

Super secret: Get a razor that will fit the Venus blades in it. They're a lot sharper and they seem to last FOREVER.

guy44 12-11-2007 05:42 PM

If you asked me eight years ago, the answer would have been electric.

If you asked me six years ago, when I went to college, the answer would have been "shave?"

If you asked me one month ago, the answer would have been electric again.

But lately the electrics seem to hurt more and more - kinda like if my answer had been "tweezers." So I switched, for the very first time, to disposable razors. Works like a charm.

Bruce Vain 12-12-2007 01:40 PM

Electric razor on the face (Norelco, but I forget the exact model). I shave in the car on the way to work.

Fusion on the chest. My wife likes me smooth.

Norelco Electric. Although I do admit not as good a conventional razor.

stevie667 12-14-2007 01:34 PM

I have an electric razor, Braun 8995, for day to day shave and an M3 turbo for when i fancy having a wet shave (a dry shave just never gets that close for me).

I have tried the M3 power version, but it tore my face to shreds, i havn't tried fusion yet though.

My absoloute favourite razor was a wilkinson sword with a bendy dual blade head. It was awesome, got into all the tight places and had this solid metal handle that gave the impression you had a good bit of kit, instead of just some poxy plastic rubbish.

Strange Famous 12-14-2007 01:37 PM

Wilkinson Sword... dunno the name, one of those silly things with 4 blades.

thekid65 12-14-2007 02:33 PM

Mach 3 razor here. Scoped out that new electric that they've been advertising on TV (the one with the 3 rotating heads) $200....screw that.

n0nsensical 12-14-2007 03:52 PM

Both. Electric to trim longer hair, razor to clean shave.

aKula 12-14-2007 04:27 PM

I use a double edge safety razor. I'll probably eventually start using a straight edge. As for the brush; I'd recommend a badger hair brush. It really makes shaving a joy.

Really? Cause I recently switched from a Gillette Venus Divine to the Gillette Fusion, and I gotta say I like the Fusion better. They don't have an equivalent to the Fusion in the women's line of razors.

As for men's razors that fit Venus cartridges, that would be the entire line of Mach 3 razors. I used to use Mach 3s instead of Venus cartridges on my Venus constantly. I would say they're about the same as each other.

QuasiMondo 12-14-2007 05:37 PM

I use a good set of clippers. If I shave too close, I get horrible razor bumps and ingrown hairs, and then I would have to tweeze them out.

I've had people recommend Magic Shave, but I think I'd rather lather my face with boiling battery acid than use that stuff ever again.

drag0nmanes 12-14-2007 07:40 PM

Quattro? I think. Dunno, a buddy of mine got a couple boxes of free samples from his old work so I've been going through them for the last few years. Basically electric razors give me hellish razor burn, so non electric it is for me.

thebeat 12-15-2007 07:48 PM

Fusion for the win.

BogeyDope 12-15-2007 07:59 PM

The problem I have with regular razors is that I don't want to shave somewhere by mistake and have more hair grow out, thicker on top of that. I seem to have gotten used to electrics, to the point where they're more accurate for me.

I'm going to try and start using my fusion more often now lol.

Hi, newbie here. :orly:

I shaved with an electric (Norelco's) for 30 years until my wife bought me an old-fashioned razor shave at Art of Shaving in Las Vegas for our wedding anniversary:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/71/21...d980d25d_m.jpg

I was completely astonished by the comfort and closeness (didn't have to shave for 2 days!). Now I use traditional shaving soaps and creams, a good badger hair shaving brush, and an (adjustable) single-blade safety razor:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/22/41...e5915339_m.jpg

Shaving's gone from an annoying, sometimes painful chore to a pleasant, almost zen-like pleasure.

Electric was never close enough for me. I've heard they've improved significantly in recent years but now it's just habit.

But i'm going to invest in a Mach 3.
I've heard nothing but good about them.

allaboutmusic 01-27-2008 06:07 PM

Mach 3. I hear the Fusion is marginally better but the blades are too expensive for me.

Anxst 01-27-2008 07:35 PM

Straight Razor. Badger hair brush, and a mug and soap. My father taught me to shave that way, and I got his gold and ivory handled straight razor when he passed away. I tried easier things, but nothing was as nice.

Also, I sure as hell listened to my dad, having seen him walk around the house stropping a razor every morning. I can only assume my daughter does the same :).

Scorpion23 01-27-2008 08:36 PM

Add another one for the Straight Razor. Super Badger brush, with soap and ceramic mug. I haven't had a single ingrown hair since I started, and it really keeps my face free of acne as well.

Here's my setup:
The second picture is my travel setup. The brush stores inside the stainless steel handle.

I got mine from Classic Shaving for $70. I debated a long time about getting it, but I travel out of state at least 1-2 times a month so it was worth it. Also, the brush is nickel-plated brass not stainless as I mentioned. They do have a stainless version on that site though.

There is no way I'd shave my head with a straight razor. Maybe after a few more years of use (it's only been about a year for me). It just seems like it'd be hard to keep the correct angel when you can't see what you're doing.

Atreides88 01-28-2008 08:31 AM

Since I go to a military school, I have to shave everyday, so it's an electric razor in the morning since it doesn't take very long. But when I need a great, close shave for special occasions, inspections, church, etc., I usually go with a Mach 3 and shaving gel for sensitive skin.

Scorpion23 01-28-2008 04:34 PM

I've been shaving with a straight razor for 14 years now. You'd have to pay me a lot to use one to shave my head. Gauze ain't cheap, ya know.

Seriously, keeping the correct angle by feel does come to you after a few years, but I can't imagine doing it on top my head. Some people might, but it can't be easy.

allaboutmusic 01-29-2008 12:39 AM

Point taken - will avoid the straight razor!

I forgot to add that using hair clippers to trim your beard and moustache is MUCH better than using the flip-up trimmer on an electric razor.

Pholeus 07-17-2008 12:22 PM

robot_parade 07-17-2008 03:58 PM

Tully Mars 07-17-2008 05:35 PM

But every now and then I use my Norleco Flex Head.

Real men rip hair out with their hands.

NeoRete 07-18-2008 10:33 AM

I use a headblade on the noggin and a Mach 3 Power for the rest. The Headblade is the greatest thing in the world to shave with once you get used to it, very few ways to cut the scalp (which bleeds like you wouldn't believe). Would never have purchased the Mach 3 Power (looked too gimicky) but got it as a gift for Christmas. I was surprised how well it actually works, I've not had any cuts or nicks since I switched over from the traditional Mach 3.

Cernunnos 07-19-2008 11:27 AM

I will almost always use the Gillette Fusion. The only areas shaved are my neck and cheeks, as I have a goatee and moustache. It's quick and works flawlessly with no possibility of nicking myself in a rush.

grumpyolddude 07-20-2008 06:40 PM

My first razor was a Norelco, when I was a teen. I hated it from day 1. Electrics always left my skin feeling creepy. I grew my mustache and goatee (both history now) because I hated shaving so much.

I use 2 or 3 bladed disposables. Bic and Schick both seem to work well with a gel for sensitive skin. I use Nivea for Men moisturizing after shave. I never liked the astringent ones.

I've never had ingrown hair problems with a regular razor, although I did with that old Norelco. I can even shave across or against the grain without irritation.

Bear Cub 07-20-2008 07:06 PM

Electrics for me. My beard hair is very coarse, and will dull an edge out faster than usual, and it always irritates the hell out of my skin. My five o'clock shadow starts to show up by late afternoon anyways if I shave in the morning, so the electric is faster/more convenient.

xepherys 07-20-2008 08:06 PM

badgerandblade.com is where I spend a fair amount of time, and shavemyface.com has a lot of info as well. There are some serious shave geeks on those sites, and I've always found them to be helpful with anything shave related.

Jimellow 07-22-2008 11:17 AM

I use an old school double edged razor, with Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving lotion, and a badger hair brush. It's basically an awesome experience.

Dennis 07-22-2008 06:31 PM

The Schick Quattro works very well in both directions of the grain. I started using the Mach 3, but did not like the spotty results (maybe it was my initial lack of facial hair). Switching brands made my skin happy.

forseti-6 07-22-2008 08:12 PM

I have a Norelco electric razor which I use the majority of the time because I'm too lazy to use a razor. However, when I want a really good shave, I'll use a Mach 3.

laconic1 07-27-2009 10:02 PM

I recently made the switch to a straight razor. I bought a really nice 1/4 ground LeGrelot like this one.
http://www.rasurpur.de/english/shop/...s/GRELNOIR.jpg
I've been using it for almost a month now and am really starting to get some phenomenal shaves with it. No ingrowns, no irritation, just smooth. Although the razor, strop, and hone did cost me about the same as a two year supply of Fusion cartridges it is neat to know I will be able to shave with this same razor fifty years from now as long as I take care of it.

I must have facial hair of the gods or something because it doesn't matter what I shave with, it's never close enough. Electric razors are useless, they don't cut a damn thing.
Best razor I had was an Atra, only had 2 blades and was a no nonsense razor, no promotional jargon, no lubrication strip, no special zomg triple razor vibration crap. I've tried and still use the mach 3, on top of the razors costing an arm and a leg, it's a pretty mediocre shave imo.

Gillete Sensor Excel, now discontinued, but cartridges & handles are still available if you do some searching on the net.

Electric razors irritate my skin, & the three and four blade systems don't give a good enough shave to justify the expense of the cartridges.

"What did you shave with today, son? Your battle buddy's dick?!"

Chuck Norris doesn't shave because his hair breaks razor blades
