Guys: What do you shave with?
 

After seeing the other thread about when you shave, I was curious as to what types of razor other men like to use. I used to use a Mach 3, but I received an electric razor for my birthday, and since then it's all I've ever used.

Had mach 3 with vibrate, bought the fusion instead of new blades. No real preference between the two.

Braun electric razor.

Regular razor. I can't stand electric razors.

A disposable bic with two blades.

I'm curious as to why so many people use conventional razors. In my personal experience, I get a closer, quicker [and less hazardous] shave with my electric than conventional's.

Have any of you even tried an electric?

I get the closest shave with a conventional (mach 3, non turbo) and warm face oil then I ever could with an electric. The oil tends to be a problem for many electric razors.

The Mach 3 does very well for me. Every once in a while, I'll shave with the disposable Bic at the gym and am always underwhelmed.

I sometimes shave with an electric on the weekends since I can usually multitask while using it (read: chasing a toddler). I cannot get as good a shave, particularly on my neck, with the electric. My cheeks are usually about the same (possibly better), but the historic criticism (not just from me) about the electric is that it is impossible for anyone with a significant amount of stubble on their necks to get a close shave.

Well, I agree with you there. I tend to "forget" to shave on weekdays as college+a job can be hectic. But when I'm in that situation, I usually shave with a Fusion, then clean up with my electric. Whatever works, I guess :thumbsup:

You just being hardcore, or are you serious? I spent about a week looking through antique shops for a strop, stone, and razor in rehabilitable condition before giving up on my search.

I use an electric razor. Shaving cream and razors tend to make my face hurt like hell. Although every now and then I use a mach 3 that I have, I would say once a month I use that one.

My skin always got really irritated with whatever I shaved with. Mach3, Fusion, Quattro, just about every blade you can think of. I also tried about ten different types of shaving creams and oils. Finally I settled on Bump Fighter disposable razors with whatever brand of shave gel designed for sensitive skin. It doesnt give the ultimate close shave, but it doesn't tear my skin up either.

I'm with WK on this one. I have my FIL's old straight razor with replaceable blade. (A shaper blade available at beauty supply shops) Absolutely the smoothest my mug has ever gotten. Trouble is, I can't find the blades around here, so I'm stuck with regular razors.

BTW, the straight razor will give you a GREAT shave, but there is a very steep learning curve with it. Be very careful......

The 2 blade Gillettes.

I got my straight razor at a local cutlery shop, a lower end model for $40. Strop was about $12, and brush was an xmas gift (I believe retails around $50). Not cheap, but I always get a great shave from it.

This isn't for one of those quick shaves before work, though. It'll take at least 10 minutes including lathering and shaving (longer if you do a second run against the grain). I get best results after a hot shower, though keeping the mirror clear is quite annoying.

If you want the feel of the straight without the honing/maintenance, as well as want a cheaper alternative, Dovo makes straight razors with disposable blades. I think replacement blades run from $5 to $8, depending on size and manufacturer.

I don't like normal razors. They don't do a very good job.

I've had a barber give me a shave with a straight razor but ended up getting too many ingrown hairs.

I actually don't know what I use anymore... it's metal and uses a disposable three blade thing. I stocked up on a big pile of them before I moved here and haven't had to buy any in the past year and half. I think I am down to my last four blades.

As for electric, they never give me a close enough shave for my liking and sometimes get caught in my beard.

Mach 3 turbo for me. I'm not real keen on the electric shavers, though I've never invested in a really nice one either.

My post in the other thread covered the process, I use a Shick Quattro Titanium (and have a pack of the 2-blade Shick disposables in case I run out of blades or have to go on vacation.) Exfoliating and using a good post-shave healer eliminate all but the occasional ingrown hair. A gift set of Clinique for Men exfoliating face scrub, shaving cream, and post-shave soother is $30 at most department stores and will last a month or two. I throw down another $12 for the extra strength face wash and it beats the hell out of bar soap for the way my skin looks and feels. A few times a year, my mom gets a $50 gift card to Saks Fifth Ave when they sponsor events at the museum where she works, and she usually passes them on to me, so my shaving supplies are practically free.

I'm probably going to get a straight razor and accessories for myself this holiday season and try them out, the old single-blade safety razor that was posted above is pretty good, but I want something a step above.
I'd rather lather up and put my face to a running lawnmower. At least then I'll know what to expect.

I used to use a mach 3. I got a much better shave than with my electric razor, but it irritated the hell out of my skin, and I never could find an aftershave to really fix that. I'll settle for a little bit of stubble (the lady likes it that way anyway) instead of irritated skin.

Another for the electric. I'm always too in a hurry to shave with gel and blade, and I look like a catfish if I skip it.

My Norelco electric can't hold a charge and is a pain to clean, but I got a $10 battery one from the drugstore and it has lasted for 3 years.

Mach 3 - having tried everything else, I have to conclude this is the perfect razor.

Cheapass bic disposable. Not great, but it's good enough for me. :)

I've been using a mix of electric and various blade styles since I was 17. I find that using the blade can sometimes give me ingrown hairs under my chin. The electric is faster, cleaner and gives a much smoother (closer? no, smoother) shave.

It's blue, has two blades, a swivel head, a lubrication strip, and I throw it away and get a new one out of the bag every couple of weeks. Does that help?

As a Welshman an electric razor is out of the question. It's like using a weedwhacker in the midst of the deepest Amazon. If I had less epic body hair and beard density it would be nice on occasion not to have to go through the shaving ordeal. I'm downright jealous of some of my less hirsute friends.

I tried the straight razor for a while and loved it but it scared the ever loving piss out of the missus. Stuck with the mach 3 for now.

I can't shave directly against the grain under the chin, but going 120° against it after exfoliating and using a post-shave healer after the shower, I can deal with the one ingrown that usually pops up by pulling it out with tweezers.

Another tip: if you shave in the shower or after, your pores are wide open. Splash or run cold water over your face to close them up and you'll reduce irritation and ingrowns.

I just use the cheapest disposable razors I can find. My beard is so heavy that it looks like I have a permanent 5-o'clock shadow no matter what kind of razor I use. The wife doesn't mind, so why not save a bit of $$$.

I have no facial hair above the jawline, and the hair that does grow on my neck and under my chin is extremely sparse. Manual razor's usually give me irritated skin, so I've stuck to electrics for the most part.
