guys: when do you shave? (Poll Added)
i used to shave, then get into the shower, cause then i could wash off my face. then i read you should shave after you shower, so your pores are open and stubble is softer. i bought a cheap mirror to hang in my shower to shave while i shower, but then i am in the shower longer and i feel like i'm wasting water standing there (i shut the water off when i shave in the sink).
so i wanna know what everyone else is doing, if there is a better way. do you shave: 1 - before shower 2 - after shower 3 - during shower 4 - other |
It's my understanding that during or after is the better choice, for reasons cited.
I shave whenever it occurs to me, which is usually after I step out of the shower and rarely more frequently than every 2-3 days. |
I shave immediately after exiting the shower and drying off.
|
I shave during my shower, but I wash my face first to soften up the skin. I don't use a mirror or even shaving cream, I just do it all by feel. Then after the shower, I'll splash some cold water on my face and use some soothing lotion.

i've heard of this practice and i've seen film footage of the curious people who perform it. it seems terribly ritualized, involving lather and the placement of sharp objects near or on one's throat, which i take to be an indication of a spirit possession of some kind. very strange.

During. It's usually first thing, after i've taken a moment to thoroughly wet the area with hot water to soften/open pores/etc.
|
I use an electric shaver because my skin doesn't respond well to the razor's edge. My neck bleeds. A lot. I've tried everything; it's just too sensitive. So, I shave electrically before my shower so the hot water can help deal with whatever damage the electric shaver does.

I'm not a furry guy and thus I have rather tame facial hair. Being a full time college student, I don't have to shave at all... I could go Jesus on society any day.
Because science has proven time and time again that women don't find the Unabomber / Branch Davidian look all that appealing, I typically shave on Fridays, though it is either after one or two weeks. I went a month a few times since being back. It was a pretty hairy situation. As 4 years of military service taught me: Shaving every day is brutal on the face. I like the feel of a few days worth of stubble. Keeps me in touch with my inner caveman. I use a plain old Mach 3 and a cheap Remington electric when I do brutalize my mug. Quote:
... Shaving is something THE MAN requires to tame us. Just tryin' to keep a brother down. |
I added a poll...
And I shave during my shower... No idea why. |

Always before shower. I use an electric and it really pulls on my hair after the shower, even after the face is dried.
|
I always shave after I take a shower.
|
Every morning, I get in the shower, shampoo my hair and rinse it, then exfoliate my face, rinse, wash with facial cleansing soap, then lather up and shave*, then put conditioner in my hair brush my teeth, wash the rest of myself, rinse my hair out, and get out. Once I dry off I put on post-shave healer and/or post-shave soother.
*-about twice a week I shave down below and once or twice a week I shave my armpits |
In the shower. I used to go by feel, until I got an anti-fog mirror. Worked okay, but one ear was always lower than the other.
|
I used to shave in the shower, back when I had a no-fog mirror. It's easier and quicker than shaving after, which I do now. And half the time, my face looks like I stuck it in a weed whacker when I'm done; It sucks because I like that clean-shaven feel.

After the shower... the hair is softer after the shower.
I'd do it in the shower but I don't have a mirror. |
In the shower. And about half of the year I shave my head so in the shower.
I don' need no stinkin' mirror. Everything has been in the same place for 43 years so I'm used to where it is all at and can go from memory. |
I almost never actually shave... I just use my beard trimmer with no attachment, so it trims it down to like 3 days worth of stubble... and I usually only do that sunday.
on the rare occasion that I decide to shave and irritate the bejesus out of my face I usually do it immediatly after the shower... if I had a mirror in my shower I would probably do it in there. I've done it in the shower without a mirror and dont cut myself up, but I always end up getting out and seeing stray hairs I missed... and lol at the american psycho references... |
2, always 2. Tried one once but ended up looking ridiculous.
|
I tend to shave in the morning on alternate days before work. I shower at night normally after work, and seeing as fast as my facial hair likes to grow if I did it around then I'd have half a beard by the next morning.
|
I use an electric razor, so it's virtually impossible to get a clean, smooth shave after the shower. When I used a standard razor, I always shaved in the shower.

I shave about once a month when my beard starts to get really thick... it isnt usually related to a shower, but sometimes I shower after to get all the foam and so on off my face
|
I shave about 2 or 3 times a week, because I work from home, so hardly anybody sees me and my wife is not particularly fussed if I'm hairy or not.
Oh yeah - the question: Before the shower. I just always have. The really hot water helps stop the bleeding ;) |
(Kind of a sad story.)
My parents got a divorce before my Dad got to 'teach' me how to shave. So my mom got me an electric razor. I always saved before the shower... it just felt better. Now that I know the proper ins and outs of shaving (Thanks to Queer Eye and the guy from the Art of Shaving store) I use a straight razor and I kick ass at it. |

I've tried a beard. I don't like it myself . You need to groom a beard, too; it's not exactly sprout and forget. Even more importantly, the ladies are generally down on it. |
Something my dad always said about rule of the three S's that I do to this day.
1. Shit 2. Shower 3. Shave Starting yesterday, I will grow my yearly winter beard. |
Whenever I shave, I kind of ... loosen little specs of skin on my face. They're little white dandruff looking things usually under my chin. I like to shave before showering so I can wash my face of this stuff afterwards.
Does anyone else have this happen too? |
once or twice a week during shower.

I usually use a blade, so I shave immediately after showering. Your skin is softer and more pliable, which cuts down on cuts and razor burn. If you use a blade, you should change it after 15-20 shaves. Always shave with the grain. I get a much closer shave with a blade, which is pretty much a universal.
When I use an electric, I always do it before I shower. Your face swells because the hot water opens up your poors and increases blood flow. That pushes the skin up over the follicle and an electric just can't get as close. It is easier to do on a weekend, though. |

I shave before my shower, if I shower in the morning. I usually shower before bed, so that I don't bring the dirt of the day to bed with me. But I shave in the morning.
So that means before I wash my face. If I shave after I wash, the razor grabs at my skin. I get a smoother shave before getting my skin wet. If I used blades it would be less of an issue, but it's hard to see when the mirrors are all fogged up. Plus the shaving cream for blades smells, even the non foam gel types. I'd rather not smell like shaving cream. Quote:
I have since re-worked it to account for real life: 1. Shit 2. Shave 3. Shower  |

I tried an electric once; I'd rather lather up and put my face to a running lawnmower. |
I shave before the shower, just so I can rinse off the shaving cream in the shower. I do get a washcloth really warm and let it set on my face to open the pores before I shave. I usually only end up shaving about 3-4 times a week. I'm too lazy to do it every day.
