Myspace, Facebook... etc.

How do you feel about these friend networking sites? Sometimes I want to delete mine while at other times, I love them.

This post is rather irrelevant, but I just know a lot of people who have had bad experiences with them, and they've broken up a lot of relationships.

JumpinJesus 09-16-2007 07:06 PM

I've got accounts for both, but I rarely use them. I use them to keep tabs on a few friends around the states and what they're up to. Other than that, they're about as useful as my little toe.

snowy 09-16-2007 07:23 PM

I use both Facebook and MySpace...my MySpace account is mostly to show off what an internet whore I am (not the kind that posts naughty pictures, the kind that spends endless hours on the 'net, rather) and keep track of assorted friends, and my Facebook is for keeping track of college friends and goings-on.

I've never gotten so wrapped up in either that I've wanted to delete one, and I have set up the privacy controls so that the flow of information about myself is limited to people I know, and I try not to share anything that connects my real name with my screen name unless you have me friended.

The only real complaint I have about either is that my brother tends to send me nasty messages on MySpace. Why is it that it's appropriate to treat others like crap over the Internet? I'll never understand that one. Imagine it like having your own personal troll. Woo. Aren't you jealous?

Wulfgate 09-16-2007 07:36 PM

I hate myspace. Not that its a bad social website, it is just that it is insecure about who it lets onto the site and who can see your profile.

Facebook use to be very exclusive, where you had to have a university email address to get an account. Now anyone can get onto it, but they still won't be able to see your profile unless they are in your network or you add them as a friend.

I've never wanted to get rid of my facebook account. It is only a means to connect with the friends I have on campus and elsewhere. No spam for the most part and no weirdos trying to "hang out".

ShaniFaye 09-17-2007 03:06 AM

I have accounts on both....I never remember to log into my facebook...but I use my myspace accounts (I have two) every day. I wish myspace would integrate the feature that Cherry Tap uses though, so you can actually see who has visited your profile and looked at what

Push-Pull 09-17-2007 04:15 AM

I think MySpace and such gets a bad rap from the way some people use them. They put personal stuff up and wonder why it comes back to haunt them later. I've even heard of people not getting jobs because of what an employer can dig up on you through these sites.

That being said, I have a MySpace page, but strictly to help me get sidework in my area. It actually has helped some, but isn't as good as word of mouth.

Nimbletoe 09-17-2007 05:22 AM

I use both, but like Facebook much more. I like the layout better, the applications are pretty cool, and a lot more people that I know use it. Plus, myspace pushes a bunch of advertising crap on you, facebook doesn't.

Manic_Skafe 09-17-2007 05:32 AM

I really don't have a problem with them either.

Surely you run into the same issues you run into everywhere else on the internet but it's pretty useful in keeping up on bands, finding new bands, and keeping in touch with people you really don't care enough about to contact in a more personal manner. And while that may sound a little crass, I'd much rather prefer to string and be strung along by friends that I'm no longer close to but share a few common events, friends, etc.

And of all the people I've known to end up in relationship trouble because of sites like myspace and facebook - I'm pretty sure they were all looking for it.

soma 09-17-2007 05:37 AM

I have been involved in some facebook drama. Not fun, but I lost a friend who really did more harm than good.

Overall though, they help me keep in touch with people I don't see all the time. I had a few friends who dropped out and I never see them anymore, but then there's facebook. So that's nice.

Redlemon 09-17-2007 05:38 AM

I have a completely-empty Myspace profile, just so that I can still access some band pages. I don't have the time to do more, nor the inclination. And Myspace pages give me a fricken headache when i try to read them.

/cranky and old, I guess

fresnelly 09-17-2007 05:55 AM

I use Facebook to keep tabs on friends and colleagues who I can't see very often. It's also neat to see how people from high school have turned out without having to actually get together.

I also like the Scrabble application that allows you to play online with friends.

However, surely it's more important to have a life offline and maintain those ties with close friends and family.

aberkok 09-17-2007 06:55 AM

I have 2 MySpace pages... you sort of have to have one if you are a musician these days. It's expected and a great way for people to hear you in a fast and convenient way. Unfortunately, that is about the only good thing about it. I find it very ugly compared to just about every other networking site out there. I also wished it worked more consistently. If I didn't have a band to promote, I'd trash it in a second.

Facebook I think has potential. I use it to try and quickly spread articles and links I think are worthwhile, and also for promotion, for which I've found it's come in handy. Sometimes I wish I didn't know how much time my friends spend on there doing dumb shit, but, oh well... I probably look the same way to them (?) In addition, I'm grateful to have re-connected with certain friends from high-school overseas.

So far I've managed to avoid the time-wasting add-ons and I don't see that changing.

Daniel_ 09-17-2007 10:05 AM

I use facebook, and have a bunch of friends that all play online scrabble on it.

Willravel 09-17-2007 10:08 AM

I have them so people from my past can get in contact with me. I get an email if someone adds me or tries to send me a message.

LoganSnake 09-17-2007 10:46 AM

I have both. Facebook, I made back in the good days of the service for people to get in contact with me as some of them don't have MySpace. MySpace, I made after some persuasion of a friend and ended up getting hooked on it for a while. After started dating my current girlfriend, I basically "quit" MySpace and log-in only to see if I have any messages from the people on my buddy list.

World's King 09-17-2007 11:24 AM

I'm a Myspace whore.

healer 09-17-2007 12:02 PM

I don't do either. I just never saw the appeal.

That, and I think that Facebook is the devil.

Datalife2 09-17-2007 12:14 PM

i broke up with my girlfriend because of facebook. I never knew about it and kept it from me untill i just went on one day and to see she has 500+ people on there.. All her exes, all her one night flings and so on...I wonder what other site she was a member of... wait no i dont care about her so ya.

You're so full of crap.

Baraka_Guru 09-17-2007 04:48 PM

Facebook is losing its cool; it's succumbing to application spam, etc.

It's over.

surferlove007 09-17-2007 05:03 PM

I happened to be a facebook fan myself.
The thing I really enjoy about it is that it's reunited me with friends from elementary school I lost touch with after I moved from GA to TX.
I just think that's the neatest thing ever.
Also facebook is nice because you can post pictures up farely easily as well as have fun without being spammed to death.
I hardly check my myspace account.

Actually Fob_Magi found me and James on Facebook and friended us. of course at the time James and I were like who the hell is this guy, but then figured it out.
It's kind of neat because when someone from the TFP finds you there it's a whole new ballgame when it comes to who this person really is etc besides just a screename and opinions.

albania 09-17-2007 05:10 PM

I never used my space, I was sort of made to join facebook. I don't really use it that much; it seems alright though.

JumpinJesus 09-17-2007 05:54 PM

maybe I'm missing something here, but how do you encounter drama on myspace? Is it the result of an aggressive survey? Someone tries to steal your woman by using the comments section? I don't get it.

I keep hearing people talk about drama on myspace and I can't help but equate it to a high-speed chase on tricycles.

Well I've never really encountered it, but from what I know, you basically fight over myspace? Or people can private message various people... etc.

some people find ways to cause drama for themselves and others no matter what they're doing.

although I have actually had someone harassing myself and my GF on aim...but eventually the person grew tired of my calm and calculated demeanor and vanished into the internets.

Plan9 09-17-2007 06:50 PM

You can add drama to any computer network by simply introducing estrogen.

boom29 09-17-2007 06:51 PM

I have a --space account which I didn't even create, but do check every once in a while. Ironically, I mainly use it for it's original purpose and check out various music/artists.

I also have a Facebook which I do keep up on a more regular basis. I like the layout a lot better, plus, it allows me to keep up with my college friends.

Gman 09-17-2007 07:32 PM

I use facebook and I like it well enough. I'm not the kind of guy who fills out all those quizzes, and posts up their spring break plans on it, but I do like to look up my friends' pages now and again to see what they are up to.

Bear Cub 09-19-2007 10:13 AM

I have both, rarely use Facebook except to hunt down old colleagues. MySpace is my music portal. I'm an alternative/rock fan, and where I reside, the radio is flooded with nothing but top 20 and christian country. Anywhere that I have free access to the genres I like and can see an infinite number of new artists is alright with me.

dirtyrascal7 09-19-2007 12:12 PM

I have an account on both, although I greatly prefer facebook to myspace. The layout on facebook is more intuitive, structured, and easy to navigate. Plus, you aren't overwhelmed by advertising. I really dislike everything about myspace, but unfortunately I have some friends who only have myspace accounts... so for the time being, it's a necessary evil.

Before there was any of this shit, there was Geocities...

..and my 4 colored, tiled, bolded text with the dancing jesus was the best page in my whole class.

rock on

Omigod, flashbacks here, Elo.

Yeah, I rocked the geocities.

I was a geocities slut.

Shauk 09-21-2007 03:24 AM

I remember calling it geoshitties a lot due to the craptastic uptime it had

Another 6'8" electronic music fan? What are the odds?

sscott 10-02-2007 04:50 PM

I'm in college and everybody I know has a facebook account, with a few exceptions. It helps you keep in touch with people from your home town and lets you look up people you have class with to see what they're all about. sometimes i feel a little like a stalker though when I'm looking at someone's profile who I don't really know.

trust me...it happens, I've seen it....all it takes is one person deciding another person isnt in their top friends list anymore and a shitstorm of drama starts

I prefer myspace....more people I know use it and facebook has too much stuff on it I would never utilize, plus if you can customize your page on facebook I havent figured out how....and I like being able to do it on myspace

Cynthetiq 10-02-2007 05:00 PM

eh, i see these social networking sites as another way to just say, "What? You aren't part of this cool place???? Jump on...." and then when it looses favor, everyone moves to the next cool place.

Seems no different than the latest club, bar, restaurant.

I don't roll that way, so I don't participate in them to the dismay of several friends that I'm not able to superpoke them.

sscott 10-02-2007 06:39 PM

I agree they do seem kind of like a passing fad, but they are popular as hell right now. they do have their uses though, you can learn more about someone you barely know just by clicking on their profile and reading all the shit they wrote.

I wonder how long facebook and myspace will last, and what will replace them...
