Found a 2-year-old uncashed paycheck...any ideas?
So I was going through my old bills, and found a paycheck for $700 from 2005, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for cashing it. It says on the face "void after 180 days".
I was wondering if I should try contacting the company, or possibly the companies bank, to try and get it reissued, or am I just out of luck? |
I'd definitely contact the writer of the check and see if it can be reissued! How'd you get by missing that much????
|
Most checks stale-date after 6 months. Best bet is go back to the maker and see if you can get it reissued.
|
First off... jackpot!
Go back and get it reissued, then blow it all on hookers and coke. |

Thanks for advice, all! |
Yep, you should be able to contact your prior employer and have the check reissued. Best of luck!

What everyone else said - just make a copy of the front and back of the check in case they dispute - you'll have proof to send to them that the check has not been deposited or cashed.
|
sheesh, I wish I could forget about $700 ;)

Get a notarised copy and send them that. Keep the original - it's your proof.
In the UK a cheque is a contract, and therefore they still have the obligation to pay you - one imagines that their finance system "knows" you've not been paid, as thier bank ballance would have been $700 too high at the end of the period in question (FY 2005-06, presumably). |

Your best bet is to contact the company and explain the situation. I could sure use an auxiliary $700 myself right about now. |

In any case, $700 is quite a bit scratch to have lying around, just for "me" money. So...twistedmosaic...there's this new telescope that I've had my eye on...http://img.photobucket.com/albums/10.../whistling.gif |

If I can get my 'friend' to pay me back the $1000 he's owed me since January (long story), that plus the $700 will make life much more comfortable over the next couple of weeks. |
I'd ditto the rest of them and then say send the money to me :) you apparently don't have much use for it! :D
|
The funds may have gone to your state's "unclaimed property" department. Do a google search with your state's name and "unclaimed property". The process is usually very quick and you will receive a check for the full amount via the mail.
Been there, got my 500$ back. :) |

if you do end up getting it, I think a nice little donation to the place that helped you get it back would go far for your kharma. If you believed in that BS, that is... :D
|
Update: I had called the company a couple times and left messages in August, and never heard back from them. Then, in September, I got a call on my cell saying "here's a fax number, fax us the check and we'll get back to you"
Faxed them the check, never heard from them. However, i just went to get the mail, and have a shiny new (unexpired) paycheck! Yay! Just in time to pay for 1/3 of my iMac :D |

(sorry, with all the hooker and blow talk I couldn't help myself!) |
I get paid weekly at my summer job, and a $1000 check slipped through my radar for a month or so...
I looked at my checking account and realized that I was a grand under what I should have, and tore apart my room to find it. |
I would stick it in the ATM and see what happens. If it get's rejected then you can follow all the above advice, contact the maker, etc. But you have a better than even chance of skipping a lot of hassle. It's true that there is a time limit on checks but that is just the letter of the law. You would be surprised at how lax most systems are.
