Calling all wrestlers/jiu-jitsu people...
i have recently messed up my rotator cuff and i'm going to see a specialist soon.
that said, anyone who's wrestled and had a cuff injury, what was your heal time? a month, 2, 3? now i'm not gonna get a clear picture until i see the doctor but to give you an idea when i flip my palm over i can only bring my arm up to 40 degrees before i feel pain. until i can wrestle again i plan to run and bike and do muay thai with no punching at all with my right arm (the messed up one). bleck, i just want to wrestle... |
You SURE its a rotator cuff injury? Plenty of other things that mimic it, like a labral tear. If you've got a tear and need surgical repair, wrestling is out of the picture for the immediate future.

yeah, could be a tear too. i described my symptoms to a friend and he said i might have torn a muscle in my shoulder, something with "super" in its name.
what i'm looking for is maybe a someone who's had a similar injury and how long it took them to heal. |

hopefully they'll just tell me i'm so awesome that my shoulder couldn't take it so i just need to rachet it down a notch. i can deal with that |
My torn labrum is what's keeping me from having the surgery. I just can't take the time out of school/work to recover from it. I was told that it would be 6-8 MONTHS before returning to everyday status, as I would have to retrain many muscle groups, and my arm would be in a sling for months right out of the gate. I'm unsure how common this is, but I've had 3 opinions all tell me the same thing. I have very limited range of motion, and I deal with it, but leaving it alone has caused a multitude of back problems. Basically, all the muscle groups are compensating for one another at this point, and are constantly overworked.

That sucks, bro. I've torn up some cartilage doing these MMA classes. Turns out? It takes forever to heal while you're waiting to train.

I blew out my rotator cuff first year in college tennis. I didn't need surgury but I was out for...about 10 weeks if I recall correctly.

Good move. I've injured my shoulder a few times. Who knows exactly what - but it's touchy. The physios can normally get it back ok... but there're good physios and bad ones.. judge carefully.
(But their prescription can also be paradoxical which often doesn't help). The way I see it is this... 1) If you have surgery, you'll need physio anyway. 2) If you have physio you might or might not improve - but you can always get surgery later if needs be 3) The sports docs are very casual about surgery. Get a second opinion before rushing into anything. And finally, remember that a month or two off training is not the end of the world. Though it sometimes seems that way. |
thanks nim, it behooves me to not be breaking arms and dropping people on their heads but i will take the time off.
