I got broke

A few weeks ago I'm riding my bicycle to a movie where I was going to meet a few friends. I was riding along a two way road and this girl coming my way takes a left....right into me. I bounce off her car, while my bicycle goes flying. and hit another car then hit the ground. This car just so happens to be a meter-maid's car and she's in the back seat. She feels something hit her car and she gets out. When she gets out she just so happens to step on my foot which I find out later has a broken ankle attached to it. so now I have a broken ankle, and a lacerated achilles. so I sit, alot, just chillin' here doing enternet stuff for about 6 weeks unable to walk around or do anything for myself. Kinda sucks, I really liked that bicycle.
Anyway, this sucks in an extreme manner for me because I'm a really active person and I can't stand sitting for two days much less six weeks. I also can allready feel my legs atrophying. Any suggestions for keeping this at a minimum? Any suggestions for not getting fat? I've been walking around on my hands a bit, but I can only do that in a limited amount.
Got any suggestion for keeping myself occupied? I'm really not used to sitting around all the time.

Dude, what about physical therapy? Aren't you doing that?
If you aren't, get thee out there *now*.

I'd say suing her ass would keep you pretty occupied.

Get those cool hand crunch exercisers.

I always wanted to get good at those.

I knew a woman broke an ankle, didn't do physio, and permanently lost mass in her calf. As in, she had one regular leg and one always-skinny leg. Looked a bit odd, if you know what I mean. there must be leg raises with weights attached, or knee walking, or some damned thing that a physio expert can get you to do. Isometrics, as in pressing against resistance may do something.
Take up drawing.
Take up juggling - small bean bags/hacky-sacks would be a good start.
Find a willing woman who wants you to practice going down on her for an hour or 2 a day.
Check out everything2.com

Good luck.

well, it only happened about two weeks ago and I got out of surgery last thursday so I dont think physical therapy really is a good idea quite yet.

Good suggestions. Thanks!

Do your physio, numero uno rule.

Secondly, try to exercise the leg that isn't broke. Your body works in tandem, if you train one leg, the other leg muscles won't suffer to badly, because your body will divert resources to both.

Eat more protein to allow your muscles enough building materials, if you replace carbs with it you will gain less fat.

Okay, if s/he (sorry, wasn't sure!) isn't doing anything right yet, they should cut down on calories in general and fat in particular. Less output means you need less input. As for "your body will divert resources to both"... that's just plain WRONG. If s/he isn't exercising a muscle, say, the left leg, but *is* exercising the right, then the only muscles in the left that *might* get a little work are those that automatically brace your body to move the right leg.

Your body doesn't say "hey, the right leg is working more, let me make sure the left doesn't feel left out"... it's just not possible. As it is, it's going to take a lot of work to make sure that s/he isn't lopsided, like Kramus' friend. Your working leg is going to automatically try to accomodate your non-working leg, and part of PT is to counteract that. I know you went through some PT yourself, stevie... but whoever told you that was doing you wrong.

Don't wait too long for the PT, tho... as soon as the doc says you can, get in there. Seriously!

Dude...get well first. You've been on top physically before so you know the way back. And do all the therapy they suggest but for sure don't over do it. Patience for the long term always seems to work for me.

I meant to say something along the lines of the CNS causing muscular development (or at least halting overt degredation) in both legs. Granted it won't be the same as the leg you are working, but it will be some. I know of several people who have been recommended by their GP when they broke a leg to exercise the other for the same reason. You won't win any bodybuilding competitions, but every little helps.

The mind-muscle connection is suprising, i've seen a study in which a group of people were either told to push their little finger against a sensor thing, or think about doing it. The people who thought about doing it had up to 40% of the muscle gains that the people who did the actual task.

Sounds really cool. One problem though: my other leg has a lacerated achilles and my doctor said I shouldn't strain it too much as he had to sutcher a piece of the achilles back together and he doesent want it to rip or snap. I really dont know if that's right as I was on heavy meds but I think that's about right. Oh, I also think about running alot, shit, I dream about running almost every night.

Plan9 06-12-2007 06:04 PM

Remember to keep masturbating. That keeps me in shape.

laz_long 06-12-2007 06:13 PM

Do upper body as possible and PT as soon as possible. Being 5 weeks post ACL surgery I sympathize (and 4 other surgeries from sport accidents in 2 years). Just watch the diet and work what you can until the PTs tell you to step up the leg work.

Ask him what he consider too much strain. Even lying on your back and just pretending to run can do good, keeping the muscle active is the key, whilst its active it will still retain function that can be built back up later. When you stop working it it loses functionality and then you get chicken legs which require muchos effort to correct later.

Just as a side note, i seriously damaged some nerves in one of my hands when i was young, pretty much couldn't operate it for months, and still get the odd tingle now. As long as you stick to PT, and don't believe yourself fixed until your actually told your fixed (been there, done that) you'll be fine.

Too late, I got chicken legs. Everything below my knee is shriveled. I try to move it all as much as possible but really though, the doctor said no moving the left leg (calf) so fuck! Even my feet are pretty atrophied. Man, this sucks. How long do you think it'll take to get back to normal? I really can't even get my foot to go to a 90degree angle to my leg yet.

Wow, sorry to hear bout your leg grey. I ruptured a lower disc in my back 12 weeks ago, been home bound ever since, I am also stuck in this friggen chair all day, I used to run 5-10 miles a day now I am just a messy blob of meat, if your into gaming theres plenty to do to pass the time, if not reading, or take a few online courses, exercise the mind. And I asked my ortho Dr. if I could work on my arms while sitting, he said no way. But good news is my disc is healing and probably wont need surgery. Cant wait to start working out and running again.
