wheat grass

im in consuming wheat grass on a regular basis. does anyone have any experience or info on this? i went to a local Henry's store and found different types, ranging from tablets to powders, and some even mixed with other supplements such as spinach. the lady at the store was minimally informative so i was hoping to see if anyone here could shed some light.

I get some from Jamba Juice at least once a week. They grind it up into the juice. I take it with a slice of orange to wash it down. I know I feel better after using it, though I couldn't tell you if it's a placebo response. I never really asked my GP about it's benefits.

It's entirely possible that you're better off eating fresh broccoli:
What's With Wheatgrass?

I advise doing more of your own research, but this guy looks at a lot of research for a living.

I've tried it a couple of times -- it makes me fart tiny little farts for the whole day. Pretty unpleasant.

Also, the guy quoted above me is Andrew Weil, MD (wikipedia link), who is pretty much the scientific guru of complementary and integrative medicine, from what I've seen.

I can't quite remember where I read this, but it makes sense to me: the best way to cleanse your system is through proper food choices. Your body is already equipped to cleanse itself, all it needs is the proper nutrients. Some guidelines (although you may have heard of these):
  • Eat more whole grains (eat real oatmeal, not Count Chocula; eat 12-grain bread, not Wonder Bread)
  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables (it's incredible how many people don't eat enough despite the incredible cleansing benefits)
  • Eat more legumes (complex carbohydrates, high in fibre, and adequate protein, esp. when eaten with grains)
  • Cut out the sugar (calories without nutrients, and they are easily converted to fat)
  • Cut out the refined foods (most food that comes in a package with a list of ingredients are lacking in nutrients)
  • Drink lots of water (a prime tool for cleansing)
  • Eat nuts and seeds (they contain fibre and good fats)
  • Reduce your meat intake (meat takes a lot of energy and time to digest, which is why you should avoid heavier things such as beef and pork altogether)
Other tips:
  • Do yoga asanas (one purpose of asanas is "elimination," which refers to the removal of waste from your intestines; other benefits include toxin removal)
  • Get enough sleep (you body doesn't maintain itself properly unless it gets adequate rest and deep-sleep cycles)
  • Breathe deeply (not enough oxygen in your system hinders the movement of nutrients and the removal of toxins)

Something to think about:
  • Don't go looking for a magic pill. The true way to health and balance is through a broad, holistic approach. You are always better off getting the real thing over something reduced into a pill format. The "health and fitness" industry is good at making things seem better than they really are.

Hatha yoga is a particular system of yoga. Asanas are the yoga poses themselves. Bear in mind that yoga has eight aspects:

Quote:
(1) Yama (The five "abstentions"): violence, lying, theft, (illicit) sex, and possessions
(2) Niyama (The five "observances"): purity, contentment, austerities, study, and surrender to god
(3) Asana: Literally means "seat", and in Patanjali's Sutras refers to seated positions used for meditation. Later, with the rise of Hatha yoga, asana came to refer to all the "postures"
(4) Pranayama ("Life Force Control"): Control of prāna, life force, or vital energy
(5) Pratyahara ("Abstraction"): Reversal of the sense organs
(6) Dharana ("Concentration"): Fixing the attention on a single object
(7) Dhyana ("Meditation"): Intense contemplation of the true nature of reality
(8) Samadhi ("Liberation"): Super-conscious state of enlightenment
Source: Wikipedia

The western view of yoga clearly focuses on the third and fourth components. And the asanas themselves are what we are concerned with here.

I don't quite see the point. Is wheat a miracle substance. No. Is grass. No.

Then why would wheatgrass be so wonderful. Probably because it's easy to grow in health drink stalls?
