Quitting Smoking. A journal so to speak.

Although it might be frowned upon here at TFP (I really don't know), I've decided to start this thread about my attempt to control the habit of smoking. If this post needs to be deleted, please do so and I apologize, but at the same time, moral support goes a long way here for me.

And here we go...

I'm 25 years old. I've been smoking since I was a freshman in high school, so I guess that's roughly 10 years. Regularly I smoke about a pack a day if not more. I'm now going to quit smoking without the assistance of patches, gum or anything of that nature. I'm going to quit "cold turkey".

This is the first day without a cigarette. I'm in for quite a ride.

What's water do? Why drink water? I've never heard that before.

Drink lots of water to flush your system, and give you something other than your usual beverage to drink in order to break your habit patterns. Take a different sort of break that doesn't involve hanging with your smoking buddies. Maybe even give up coffee or tea for a couple of weeks if you drink those things while smoking. Go for a walk when you get antsy. You will get really "windy" as your body adjusts to life without nicotine drugging your body (which includes the lower intestine). That wind will pass after a few days. Shower a lot and enjoy feeling fresh. Find some mindless time consuming task that needs doing and do it. You need to put a couple of weeks behind you in order to get through the initial stress on your body as it tells you over and over that it is ready for another cigarette. Remember, every smoke you've had is a conscious choice. Simply choose to not have a cigarette. You will notice that the majority of the cigarettes you have are due to a habit, not a need. I found myself making that no-cigarette choice about once every 5 minutes sometimes
Good luck, and don't feel like getting careless/casual and having one cigarette is the end of the world. It is just a cigarette. The key is to increase the time between smokes. I have gone for years on end. The last one I had recently was 6-7 months ago. No big deal.

If find you need help. I have been a smoker for 36 years and today is my 22 day without cigs or any nicotone product at all. I owe this to a script called Chantix. This may not be for everyone but for me it has been a lifesaver (literally). Good Luck!

Good luck, its hard, and i've already tried a few times. I actually started smoking when I was your age and its almost 20 years later. STOP now while you can!!!!
Chew gum, but not the horrible nicarette stuff, just regular gum.

Wish you all the best, it's how I did it.

I think it finally sunk in after the kazillionth time of trying, the whole thing on quitting, when I truly realized how much of an addiction it was and that pissed me off to no end. Now that I've gone to hell, I won't light up, I refuse to put myself through that shit again. Ever.

Hope you have the support you need, it makes a difference.
