Sometimes when I yawn I go blind for a few seconds.
Title says most of it. It sometimes happens when I stand up (from sitting), too. Happens infrequently, sometimes multiple times a day, other times not for a week. I've had this at least since I was 13, maybe before that (I'm 27 now)
It's like a rushing sensation in my head, and my sight turns black, except for a small spot in the center of my vision, which turns kind of foggy. But it's a small spot. Also, I kind of lose control over my legs, I can still stand but it feels really weird when I try to walk. Kind of like extreme dizziness for 4-8 seconds. Any ideas on what this is? I think it might be vertigo, but I don't feel sick/nauseous, and my sight turns black, not fuzzy. The reason I haven't seen a doctor is because I've had it for a long long time, and I just kind of forgot about it. Frankly, I've become so used to it, I don't really care about treatment. I'm just curious as to what it is...unless some one suggests "Tumor!", in which case I'll promptly call a doctor. |
It could be bad circulation, dude. How much do you exercise? What do you eat?
|
I strongly suggest you go see a doctor. This is not normal, and could indicate serious problems.
|
If it's what it takes to get you to a doctor... TUMOR!
No, it's probably not a tumor. But who knows what it could be. Might be something as simple and treatable as a blood pressure problem. |
The same thing happens to me sometimes. I get a headache and things go black when I stand up. I haven't had it happen when I yawn...I don't think. I never thought of going to a doctor for it, I thought it happened to everyone. Weird.
Anyway, I have perfect blood pressure and my blood tests I just had came back all normal. If that helps you any. I looked on MayoClinic.com and couldn't really find anything that matched except veritgo...you don't have to have all the symptoms to have a condition. It also could be low blood pressure which is something most people don't consider. Do you get headaches a lot? I find that this happens more on days when I have migraines or strong headaches. I always sum it up to stress...I'm a pretty tense person most of the time so I just assumed this was another health side effect of that. |
This happens to me occasionally, too. It never lasts more than a few seconds, and goes away with no ill effects. Personally, I don't worry about it, and go about my day. Of course, this isn't exactly medical advice, and I'm not a doctor, yada yada yada...

This happens to me with the same frequency... I'm pretty sure it's just poor circulation. Most of the time, it's when I've been lying down or reclining for too long (while awake) and I get up too fast. All the blood rushes down out of my head. Sometimes it happens when I yawn too, but again, mostly after periods of little or no physical activity.

I excersise a lot; I walk to work everyday which is 45 minutes each way.
I try to avoid excess cholesterol, fat, and salt in my foods. So I don't think it's bad circulation, maybe it's a circulatory problem to my head though(unlikely). My family has a host of blood pressure related problems, most dealing with high blood pressure. So I will look into that and mention it to a Dr. Yes I do get headaches sometimes, in fact they started (and were severely painful) when I was 13 too (they have since waned in their painfulness). However they don't necessarily correlate with these blackouts... I will contact a dr. this week, and see what he has to say. Stay tuned. |
Actually, vision loss for several seconds after standing up is relatively normal. It's caused by a temporary decrease in blood pressure, which is caused by the change in your body position. It's called a head rush, and is not uncommon or dangerous.
However, if it happens to your that frequently, you may have what is known as Postural/Orthostatic (both terms) Hypotension. |
It does sound like problems with a sudden change in blood pressure, but a doctors visit should be done to make sure that your not about to explode or spontanously turn into a puppy or something.

did you hear that the yellow wiggle hung up his boots cos he had a problem that he was blacking out and fainting.
he found out that his heart wasnt pumping enough blood for him for all the jumping round he had to do for his shows... i know its prolly not related but thought id mention it anyways |
I have this as a result of low blood pressure. What did your doctor say?
|
Hey Painted, any news?

Hey buddy, I looked this up for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_rush Give that a shot. Wikipedia is always a good place to start. |
Yes, it's just a drop in blood pressure (postural hypotension). Not uncommon at all. I've always had it. They usually just suggest you stand up slower. Occasionally I forget and get lightheaded, but I've learned to enjoy the feeling.
|
This happens to me all the time too. Since I was around 15. I have to be very careful about not rushing to get ready for work in the morning. Sometimes when my vision goes black I do passout. But that is rare and the last time that happened I was in college.
|
I also get that head rush thing.
However, I've never heard of anyone getting it when they yawn. About 1/2 the people I know (including me) have watery eyes when they yawn but going blind seems abnormal. You should have it checked out if you haven't already. |
